Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Andrew Halcro on Moore Up North & Scott McAdams

After the turmoil and the tearing within the Alaska Republican Party this week, I wanted to get Andrew Halcro’s take on the situation.

Andrew is an “effete young chap” (according to Sarah Palin), social moderate and fiscal conservative who was a 2-term Republican State Representative, and Independent Gubernatorial Candidate who ran against Sarah Palin in 2006. He is a former KENI talk show host, proprietor of AVIS Alaska and a popular blogger at www.andrewhalcro.com

The Alaska US Senate race is heating up. For the first time in three decades, there will not be a Murkowski running on the Republican ticket. It promises to be an interesting and exciting contest. Check out this short clip from this week’s Moore Up North.

Did Andrew Halcro just endorse Scott McAdams?

Are you sure effete was the adjective you were looking for?

All the definitions seem a bit derogatory, and I don’t think that’s what you were going for.

Sarah Palin (good “Christian” woman that she is) first used the term “effete young chap to denigrate…er… describe Andrew Halcro in her mudslinging compilation of lies “Going Rogue”. Shannyn’s use of the term here is tongue-in-cheek.

I added a little edit to make that clear. Yes, it was Sarah Palin’s characterization, not anyone else’s.

Yay….I love that effete young chap. Alas, it is my bedtime…..just slugging a brandy! :)

I got the “effete young chap” bit and am sure he did too, also. Andrew Halcro seems to be a very intelligent man. His blog is most informative on things like the “pipeline” and the dairy situation and he seems to always have the information to back up what he says. Besides he’s nice looking and a classy dresser. Bet he even buys his own clothes.

The Daily News had the best analogy following Palin’s win over Halcro in 2006. “The smartest kid in the class, just got beat by the most popular kid in the class.”

As I watched the debates that year, I kept asking myself, “doesn’t anyone realize Sarah isn’t saying anything?” I quickly coined the phrase “soundbite Sarah” as every answer she gave sounded like the same pre-recorded soundbite being played no matter what the question. That ineptness continues today.

“Andrew is an “effete young chap” (according to Sarah Palin)”

She’s just jealous of his style, class, brains and ability to purchase his own clothes AND dress himself appropriately for every situation. Graces she clearly lacks.

She was never popular–she was feared. But I like the line, it’s very clever; the line was wasted on Palin, but appropriately applied to Mr. McAdams.

The woman in the photo is Shannyn Moore, contributor to The Mudflats here, and apparently a friend of Andrew’s. They are shown in those links up there at the taping of her radio program, “Moore Up North”.

Great interview. I love reading Andrew’s blog, but he has been inactive lately. I’ve been wondering if he’s lost interest or he’s just been busy. I thought once the election was over he start back up, but so far he hasn’t.

I agree. I used to be a regular over there at Halcro.com but the blog has slowed a bit. I still check in.

I’m jealous of Andrew’s intellect and envious of his ability to pull of that collegiate look with that argyle sweater.

I just love Andrew Halcro (even though I’m a Democrat)! Shannyn and he just do outstanding interviews and THIS was as good as it gets. Thanks! Entertaining while educational.

Imagine what would have happened if Halcro had been elected Gov, instead of “soundbite Sarah” (excellent term Gol3!), how much more ‘rill’ progress Alaska would have made in the past few years. I would like to see another interview after Halcro has a chance to meet and research Scott McAdams. If he doesn’t change his mind re: “the devil that you don’t know” and then might feel like he would really WANT to support McAdams. Halcro is obviously an educated man and McAdams education driving credentials ought to be motivating.

I love Andrew Halcro! He is so smart and I was very fond of his radio show.

If he endorses Scott than I am voting for him as well. I got a call today from a pollster asking who I would vote for if the election were today. I actually said Ethan and Scott. Whew! That is something new to me but it is the best choice.

One shocking point that Halcro made blew me out of the water. That, if Murkowski were a write-in candidate her name would have to be correctly spelled and Murkowski is not an easy name to spell. I’ve never considered that before, but it makes total sense.

A Fan in CANo Gravatar says:

At first glance, yes it does look hard to spell. If it’s broken down then it’s Mur kow ski. I get an image of a skiing cow with a funny spelling. It could be done by a clever ad campaign to teach the spelling.

It amazes me that a write in candidate would even have a chance. One more thing that makes Alaska one of a kind.

Maybe not exactly the same, technically, P,Ws, but I seem to recall a write-in candidate winning –quite handily, if I recall– a few years back in…where was it? Colorado? Nevada?

Party candidate was killed very shortly before the election (in a plane crash? — I’m fuzzy on the details after all this time and what with having so much extraneous and useless junk cluttering up my mind, and all). Since it was too late for a ‘new’ candidate to declare –and since, apparently, ‘write-ins’ don’t have any such time constraints for declaring, or whatever– and since ballots had already been printed for the election, the party pushed/urged the late-candidate’s supporters to write-in his spouse’s name on the ballot.

If I’m not getting things all bolluxed up in my mind, here, she served out the full term well and then went on to campaign for, and win, elections for the seat in her own right.

Any ‘puppies know the election I’m recalling (or think I’m recalling)…did I get none, some, any, all of the details about it ‘right’? Or have I gone totally around the bend… beth

That was Paul Wellstone that was killed in a plane crash in Minnesota. His wife won his seat and then Norm Coleman won after that. And…we all know how that turned out.

That devout, Christian woman (!) has been bearing false witness against

I AM SO SICK, TIRED AND F-E-D U-P with this “woman’s” HYPOCRISY. ‘rilly…

Sarah has no idea what the words “effete” or “chap” mean. I’m sure she’s thinking of chap-stick and someone had to tell her include “effete.”
