Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Another view from the air over on the west side of Cook Inlet.

Busy busy day today.  I’ll have some photos later from the Alaska State Fair.  But now, the pillow beckons.

Haven’t you heard…every single liberal in the country is on welfare or unemployment, sitting in their recliner dressed in (blue) sweatpants and stained t-shirts, eating popcorn and watching daytime television while opening up checks from the gubment.

And, of course, there are NO conservatives on welfare or unemployment, NONE receive money from those soshalist/communist/Marxist programs like Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid and they’ve ALL pulled themselves up by their bootstraps while simultaneously praying to little baby Jesus (’cause it IS a Christian nation, after all), saving small children from starvation in foreign countries and rescuing small puppies from drowning in the sewer.

        Where HAVE you been???????

Thanks benlomand2 for the link. I wish other media sources would have referred to that article McGinnis wrote about Sarah’s pipeline fiasco because it would have put her reactions in a more understandable – not justifiable – context.

Barbara, you’re right. Those comments were awful – not just about liberals not having work ethics – though where they get that idea is bizarre. Her followers obviously don’t spend any time reflecting upon issues or problems, they simply regurgitate whatever phrase of hate is the flavor of the day. So boring and so sad.

Sure am grateful that folks on mudflats actually think and analyze – oh, yeah, and read.

My mind is doing summersaults trying to process the photo.

On the one hand, it’s used to seeing such vast vistas with no trees on it — wide, open, featureless prairies, if you will. On the other, it’s used to seeing such vast vistas with many congregations of trees on it — frequent stands of multi-treed, forest-like islands scattered liberally about, if you will.

That this photo shows lone trees plunked with seeming randomness on such a seemingly-endless expanse of other-wise uninterrupted land, is making my mind do some heavy-duty ‘computing’ to process it!

Thanks for the lovely photograph, AKM! Among other things this fine day, it’s gently reminding me of the great adaptations Mother Nature makes in ‘dressing’ herself, and of the resulting diversity (ecological and otherwise) on this wonderful old planet we all call Home. Indeed, mental gymnastics are a good thing; thanks for providing, as you always do!, a spring board for growth with your fantastic pictures. beth.

It’s difficult to figure out the proportion of the trees in the photo. I assume that there are so few because of the harshness of the landscape? The trees seem to all be a similar size, but are they small or mature? Was there a fire that devastated the original fauna? It looks very like the trees that are now coming up in the areas around Mt. St. Helens. Of course, everything was wiped out on the North Slope and for years nothing grew because of the ash. But here and there, there are trees now. Not a massive old growth forest, but very like the photo.

Nice photo AKM. There is something very peaceful about this one.

While I am taking some time to breathe today I am having strange musings. Like, does anyone wonder how Willow must feel with Bristol getting all of the cash and fame (being on Jay Leno, DWTS, etc)? I am a second child. My older brother acted out horribly all through our childhood and thus received most of the attention from my parents. It makes me wonder how Willow must feel. Her older sister goes off and gets pregnant, drops out of high school and now look what she is rewarded with. If I were a teenager I would feel that all of this is terribly unfair. This is sending a horrible message to other teen girls as well. I guess there is no accounting for the whoring of popular media (getting those ratings and readers). Why can’t the quiet kids who study hard, finish school, put up with the bullies, etc. get some kind of acknowledgement for their achievements and send out a better message?

    Just random thoughts…

By the way, I would kill to be on DWTS (shhhh, don’t tell anyone) just for the opportunity to be taught how to ballroom dance by a professional.

Willow is actually the third child. Track got into trouble for vandalism and was sent to join the military so hi mama could claim to have raised a combat vet instead of a criminal. Bristol, pregnant, was hooked up with a contract to tell everyone not to do what she had done. Willow, the third, has been involved in vandalism and partying, apparently following in the footsteps of both her older siblings. I would not be able to characterize any of the members of that family as ‘the quiet one’. That drama is still being played out, but I don’t see much in the way of studious behavior or self-discipline on display. I just feel sad for the whole sorry brood.

Anyone know anything about Joe Miller’s family? I was a little surprised to hear that he has eight kids, and that he has been working on and off for the government just enough to get health care coverage. Not to mention that he must love Alaska, that makes 10 PFD checks a year. So he’s a gimme my benefits on one hand and cut guvermint handouts on the other hand.

      • 11.2.1
        ks sunflowerNo Gravatar says:

I’d like someone to ask Joe Miller two questions because he rants against government entitlements and “hand-outs.”

        1) If he becomes a Senator, will he waive the health insurance given to members of Congress?
        2) If he serves just long enough to vest in the Congressional retirement plan, will he waive that since he is so against Social Security? I really have problems with the generous retirement plan we provide Senators and Representatives for so little time spent working in Congress. So, if he thinks he deserves it why don’t the rest of us who work all our lives deserve the measly little check SS provides?

Bubs – if you’re an herbal tea drinker, be sure to look up all the herbs you’re taking in. A few years ago I found myself feeling really off and worse as the days went by. One morning I was trying to lug a box up the stairs and realized I felt like I was going to just keel over and die. Got to the ER and they found my blood pressure was 205 / 185. Long story short , I found out later that the new “healthy” herbal tea that I had been drinking by the gallon had two herbs in it that raised pressure.

          Who knew ?!

Watch *like a Hawk!*, your sodium intake, Bubbles (and all other mudpuppies, too).

Buy fresh fruits and veggies; as much and as often as you are able. (Or buy the lowest-sodium content canned/frozen veggies you can find, and rinse the hell out of them before you use/eat them.) Don’t “salt” Anything!

Check for the sodium content on Everything you eat and/or drink… A 15 fl. oz. can of Pepsi? — 30mg. Eight fl.oz. orange Gatorade? — 110mg. Eight fl. oz. of Equate-Strawberry Ensure? — 200mg. One Oscar Myer classic weiner? — 380mg. In a Big Mac? — 742mg. (The US RDA –Recommended Daily Allowance– for sodium is a mere 2000mg. per day – it ALL adds up!)

When purchasing *any* comestibles, remember to check also, too, the *serving size* the sodium amount is calculated for. (Who the heck makes a sammich out of only One! slice of Turkey Smoked Cotto Salami? Certainly not anyone I know…even though the slices have 310 mg. sodium <i<each! — and that’s not even accounting for the sodium in the bread, the spread, or any ‘sides’ you have with that sammich.) Condiments are a real booger when it comes to sodium.

Don’t use any ‘salt substitutes’ in your cooking/on your food. Use, instead, spices of all sorts – be creative and have fun experimenting. Spices and Mrs. Dash are your friend; salt, not so much.

Yes, your body needs, *demands*, sodium to keep it functioning properly, but we have become a nation where e.v.e.r.y…s.i.n.g.l.e item of food/drink we purchase for consumption –with rare, rare, rare exception– has a too-great sufficiency of it…an over-abundance of it.

Manufacturers and processors of food have gotten pretty good about cutting fat out of the goods we consume and they’re getting better about reducing the amount of sugar they’re adding, but they still haven’t quite figured out they need to knock it off, already, with all the *added* sodium! Until they do, WE have to be smart label-readers and *only* purchase foods and drinks with the lowest-possible sodium in them.

Eat well and enjoy what you eat, but watch, watch, Watch! that sodium. beth.

[DISCLAIMER: I am not a dietitian, a nutritionist, or a doctor; I've had *no* formal training in this --or any other-- medical field. I *am*, however, an RQ (Registered Quack) who is learning all sorts of things I never, ever!, wanted to *have* to learn about sodium and diet; an RQ who has been forced to re-learn *all* I 'knew' about cooking (and eating) so we can prolong --as long as possible-- the function of *other* body organs while one (of the body's many *vital* organs) has begun an irreversible and inexorable process towards Catastrophic Failure. *NOT* fun. At *all*! I, sincerely, wouldn't wish this nightmare on Anyone -- not even on my worstest of worst enemy...and that's saying a LOT! b.]

A gentle reminder: They don’t call high blood pressure “The Silent Killer” for nothing. There are, 99-times-out-of-100, *no* ‘outward’ signs of it…it’s most often just UP there — Dangerously, so; exacerbated by our every day food, drink, and lifestyle choices, it truly lives up to its name.

Fortunately, blood pressure can ALSO be ‘assisted’, tremendously!, by our food, drink, and lifestyle choices…as long as those choices are healthy ones. (Who knew there were 8mg of sodium in a 5oz! serving of red wine? Sheesh! — takes all the fun out of having too much fun!) beth.

Unfortunately, many food manufacturers have compensated for all the stuff they take OUT of food by adding in sodium and flavor enhancers (which are loaded with sodium).

Mrs. Dash and other herbs and spices are a great way to add flavor into food without adding salt. Even foods that don’t taste salty have lots of added sodium so you have to become a militant label reader to know what you’re putting in your mouth!

          All of the above!

Pain can definitely raise your BP, especially the top number. Lack of sleep and illness can have an effect also. (Coughing and the resulting inability to sleep from my twice-yearly bouts of bronchitis always send my top number up.) At least your lower number is good, which seems to be the harder one to reduce.

You might want to look into taking some Tai Chi classes as well. It’s a great exercise but easier on the body than many of the more aerobic types of exercise out there. I visited China back in 1988 and saw people in the park across from our hotel doing it in a large group every morning. Some of them must have been well into their 80s but were keeping up with the youngsters quite easily.

There’s a spiritual/meditational aspect to it and a real emphasis on breathing that would probably be very good for you, both for the fibromyalgia and for the blood pressure.

Tell Little Bubbles that we mudpups appreciate all the care she’s been lavishing on our dear Bubbles!

What I find is the ‘iciing on the cake’ is the *fact* that one of the Key points, one of the major, uber-poignant heart-string-pulling and lump-in-the-throating points, Beck made in his ‘performance’, was a TOTAL and COMPLETE fabrication.

In his “Restoring Honor” [to America] exhortations, *HE* flat-out Lied his ever-lovin’ buttocks off! Sure, he’s since fessed up to the out-right, bald-faced Lie *he* told, but it wasn’t *until After* he was called on it, that he did. Had no one called him out, he would’ve *not* said a word, I bet.

The *fact* remains: As *He* was telling citizens we have to ‘restore honor’ in/to our Nation –and as he was telling them how to go about doing it– *He* purposefully and willfully told A Big-Fat Lie! To the hundreds of thousands of people gathered on the Mall to hear and hang on his every word, and to the countless thousands who watched and heard it via the media, he told it! He plain Lied!
