Reading through this wonderful opinion piece, it’s abundantly clear how much more intellectually and morally evolved the founder of the NYC Muslim Center is compared to Palin and Beck.

It was gratifying to read that people in other countries were impressed with PO’s and Mr. Bloomberg’s defense of the Center.

    SKIP ALERT!

Posted this in response to a comment on another thread this morning, but it really belongs here on the OT.

I’m preparing for Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, (5771 already!…how time flies…), which begins at sunset tonight. I acknowledge the “Dove Ministry’s” Constitutional Free Speech rights to burn books, though I find their actions ill-advised, fear-mongering, and hateful.

I Exercise my Free Speech right to denounce and condemn the book burners also. Too. You betcha.
    Here’s a place to start: http://www.theshalomcenter.org/

L’Shanah Tovah, a sweet new year.

Excellent link, thank you. Hearing that misinformed and thoughtless pastor immediately put me in mind of the book burnings in Germany. I also reading (but can’t remember the whole context) about book and art burning/destruction by the church in Michelangelo’s time.

I just don’t understand what has once again led some to be so intolerant and so uncharitable towards other human beings.

And mostly I don’t see how they miss that this exercise in free speech will accomplish nothing but has the potential to make things so much worse.

I’ll be praying for the pastor to find the compassion and love that is at the heart of the Christian beliefs he says he has.

Hello all. I am doing OK. A little tired after that whirl wind of funeral arrangements. Honestly, it went to fast. I wanted everyone to slow down so I could listen and remember what people were saying about my Dad. I miss him a lot. Especially since I had gotten in the habit of seeing him or calling him every day. I am sitting in my yard with all these beautiful flowers that I planted while he was sick and thinking of him. Dad had a wonderful sense of humor and would be very disappointed in me if I stopped planting and annoying the neighbors. So, thatcrowwoman, I’ll take you up on your offer of flamingos. I’m thinking I could move them around the yard.

My mom stopped by yesterday (she and Dad were divorced) and sat for a while in my outdoor living room. She is also behind me with regards to the flowers. I have lots of support and I want to thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. It really has helped.

Glad you’re OK. I haven’t had to deal with my folks passing, they are in their late 80′s so I suppose sometime soon I will have to. It’s part of life, painful no doubt. The one thing I can count on is that when I kick the bucket (inevitable) it will be meaningless to me. I don’t mean to sound sarcastic or flip, but there are some things that can’t be avoided. We are our past (life comes from experience), and as far as others contributed to what we are, they should be celebrated.

I’m glad to hear that you are doing ok. My mom passed in 1996 and I still miss her.

Speaking of flamingos, we ended up with one of those plastic ones (a fund raiser thing) and decided to keep one of the three. It’s now in the backyard and once in a while we move it to a new location. My husband named it Fred.

Bob Cesca always seems to say things the way I wish I could:

“Nate Silver wrote earlier that the previous Gallup poll showing a 10-point lead for the Republicans on the generic ballot was probably an outlier. You know the one. 51-41.

And it looks like he was exactly right.

The new Gallup poll shows a dead-heat 46-46. Which of course is terrible news for the Democrats. Somehow.”

“Via Kevin Drum, the new Washington Post poll shows across-the-board preference for the Democrats over the Republicans on everything from the economy to personal values. On the “deserve to be re-elected” question, Republicans are less deserving of re-election than Democrats.

But more people said they’re going to vote for Republicans anyway.

As Drum notes, it’s the economy. And I agree, but I would add that it’s also stupidity.”

I just read an article by Robert Creamer in HuffPo that says that the Dems will lose some seats in November, but the dire predictions about Republican takeover are premature and likely not accurate. He lists several reasons why the Republicans won’t win as many elections as some people are anticipating. I’ve been convinced that they have alienated so many groups of voters (African-Americans, LGBT, Latinos, immigrants, Muslims, lower income, unemployed, etc) that they have to depend on middle-class and wealthy, white, Christians to put them in office. And THAT is a shrinking demographic!

Creamer also made a good point about the rise of the right wingnuts:
“Voters cast their ballots for people – not concepts. One of the big advantages for Democrats this cycle is that many Republican nominees are politically inexperienced radical extremists whose views — once voters learn them — are completely outside of the mainstream of American politics. ”

I, for one, feel much better after reading the article!

As for the pink flamingos, a long time ago I attended the Univ of Wisconsin in Madison for a year. On the first day of classes they covered the entire hill (that was the center of the campus) with thousands of plastic pink flamingos. I can still remember students studying, making out and doing various other legal (and some illegal) things amongst the flamingos. the student union took photos and had them made into postcards, T-shirts and posters that they sold. Proceeds went to the student union. Those flamingos were on balconies and in yards all over town the next day.

I hope everyone in Alaska is painting huge “Worst Governor Ever” signs to welcome Palin and Beck. They are getting a lot of attention in the lower 48 so I would expect the nasty ole MSM will be there. It would be great to see the anti Palin/Beck people totally outnumber the loons. It would also be great to see some clever signs (wish I had a great suggestion but….) that counter Palin’s and Beck’s hijacking of the solemness of 9/11 for their personal gain.

While running errands yesterday I saw a sign on a business that was going out of business. It said “so much for the Obama stimulus”. Being that it is a very red state I’m sure that they will get more business because of the sign. Remember here Republicans can do no wrong. Today it was posted about the business on one of the local blogs. Most of the comments are great, saying that the owners need to accept responsibility for their failing business and stop using excuses.

I must admit that I’m a bit Palin obsessed, mainly because I see the danger in her followers. If no one would listen to her I wouldn’t give her a passing thought. But these are difficult times and her form of demagoguery is dangerous.

I thought the article was good too. My only criticism is in some of the minor, almost nit picky things. While I understand that the author needed to paint a total picture of a woman who is disingenuous, I don’t care if she is a good tipper or not. I do, however, care if she treats people with respect. Plus I don’t care that she prefers Spanz girdles but I do care that she had someone else foot the bill for her under garments.

I also would have liked to have more in the way of her lies exposed, the big lies that truly expose her character. For instance, while the Bridge to Nowhere always rears its head (just like Putin), little is said about the money that actually made it into the State’s coffers.

The author has also come out swinging against his critics which, in my humble opinion, strengthens his claims.

      Tuesday, August 24, 2010
Along with searching the homes of three top Oxnard officials on Friday, District Attorney investigators also searched the homes of two former city employees on the same night, The Star has learned.

While teams of investigators served search warrants at the homes of City Manager Ed Sotelo, Assistant City Manager Karen Burnham and City Councilman Andres Herrera, a handful of investigators also looked through the homes of former public works director Ken Ortega and former public works employee Juan Moreno, according to a registry of search warrants issued by the Ventura County Superior Court.

Herrera said last week that investigators left a list seven pages long noting items taken from his house. It’s uncertain what was taken from the other homes.

In addition to the searches, several Oxnard city employees received subpoenas Monday to testify before the Grand Jury, according to City Councilman Dean Maulhardt”
