Beck/Palin 9/11-Palooza in Anchorage – The Pre-Game Show

It was an odd feeling walking past the protesters outside the Dena’ina Center in Anchorage last night. I was headed there to hear Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck say whatever it is they were going to say to commemorate 9/11. As I got out of the car, I got my first hint about what the audience might be like.

The line to get in was stretched around the block.

I ran into Spouse on the “other side” of the event, among the sign holders.  I’ve been to a lot of rallies in this town, but the signs this time were really interesting. They ranged from the hears/flowers/peace on earth variety, to the pointed jab at Glenn Beck “I liked you better as an alcoholic.” Rainbow flags waved next to Nazi moustaches.  Here’s a photo collection from the pre-game show. [Photo credit - Spouse]

~OK, that one was my favorite.

~Anticipating your question, -no.  I have no idea.

~The President of the College Republicans. This is why they’re so easy to work with in Congress.

~Former State House candidate Jason Cline (R). This is why THEY’re so easy to work with.

“Good luck!” I am told as I cross the philosophical picket line and head in. “Have fun!”

I am fortunate to be with Mudflats contributor ‘Legal Eagle’ whose arm I didn’t have to twist too terribly badly to join me in my foray into the dark side. “Yes, I’m really going,” I heard the Eagle say into the cell phone more than once.  “Covert ops,” follows as the explanation.

We are immediately greeted by someone in a vest who “wands” us and asks to see inside my bag. I pass the quick peek test, and proceed into the lobby and make my way directly to the bar. I’m wondering what would happen if they actually found a gun.  Alaska prides itself on its concealed carry laws, and the Second Amendment Task Force was actually planning an open carry day at the public library to protest the “No Handguns” sign on the library doors.  What would happen if someone was thrown out of a Glenn Beck/Sarah Palin event for carrying a gun, I muse?

My stalwart date buys the wine and we stand, taking in the scene. It’s very very white.  White hair, white faces.  As a metaphoric nod, I order the white Zinfandel. The only African-American person I see is working at the bar.  The Eagle apologizes to her, explaining that we’re not really here because we believe any of this.

The loudspeaker pipes in Iz’s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” I smile at the irony that the only thing in the room I survey that has any hint of ethnic diversity is the guy singing over the loudspeaker. Then comes Elton John’s Tiny Dancer, and I smile at the irony that the only openly gay person in the room is the guy singing over the loudspeaker. By the time Jimmy Buffet came on, I am deep into my plastic cup of White Zinfandel, just feeling thankful that it isn’t some awful Christian rock band or country music.

Cue awful Christian rock band.  And then country music.  I wonder if someone complained.

Time passes, and more time. An announcement is made by a man on stage. “I’m not Glenn Beck” (polite chortles from the crowd) “Sorry we’re running late. Not our fault.”

There are chalk boards on the stage. Time passes. The chalk boards are removed. More time passes. The chalk boards come back with scrawling on them. There are pyramids with letters, and three enumerated talking points – 1) Destroy the Constitution 2) Destroy Faith 3) Destroy History.  This is going to be fun.

An elbow in my side makes me look up to see Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan walking up the aisle bedecked in a too-tight pullover sweater – red, of course. I wonder if the party planner is here too.  I start to think about what would happen if there was some kind of security lockdown and I ended up stuck in this room for an extended period of time. The guy behind me has on a t-shirt with a picture of Sarah Palin on it, holding a gun. It says “Attila the Mom”. I come to the conclusion I would throw myself on a spike if it lasted longer than eight hours.

I get a call from the outside world. Spouse has just asked at the ticket window and is told that 4200 tickets to the event were sold. I look behind me and judging from the empty seats, the unofficial guesstimate I heard that 800 remained unsold seemed about right.

And finally, almost an hour late, the show begins.

More to come…

Alaskan liberal/progressive/Democrats make the best, most varied, most creative protest signs & best spelled protest signs I have ever seen. And I’ve been around a lo-o-o-o-o-ng time. The Smithsonian should put together an exhibit of protest signs. Include the other side’s misspelled, hate-filled signs as well. The contrast would be so striking.

George Meegan, the world famous peace activist, who walked around the world to promote peace was there. He and another person were here from Japan. George arrived in Anchorage upon the Paint Ball Attacks as Europeans were shocked that racism against Alaska Natives was prevalent.

Young people chanted, ” Real Alaskans Don’t Quit” and ” Don’t Drink The Tea. It’s Koolaid!” One guy from the Palin/Beck/Miller side grabbed his crotch and told us to, “S**k on this.”

When I got there and stood on the corner, another Beck supporter yellled, ” Hey look, they only have thirteen people on their side! We have 4,500 to their thirteen.” Naturally, I reminded this ” God Fearing, (their words) Harding Working Americans Who Love Freedom and Jesus” of Gideon and the Medianites. Apparently, like Palin, they don’t read either, let alone their Holy Book, If I remember correctly thirteen is the number that Jesus started his community organizing with.

So, I would like to thank the the “Dirty Dozen” who were there at the beginning. The crowd did grow and I am very pleased that other Alaskans showed up. As alcohol was served, we couldn’t remain and make a situation volital.

Thank you, Alaskans. We need to persevere. I saw plenty of little yellow flags for sale. I think the Tea Baggers want to change Alaska’s Flag of Gold Stars on a Field of Blue to that of a Yellow Snake. Snakes are an invasive species in Alaska. Stay active and don’t give up.

Thank you Desa for being an organizing force. Obviously, more involvement is needed. To those that think that sitting this election out, staying above the fray is the way to go, I say this: there is a battle going on for the hearts and minds of America being waged daily now on the extremist TV channel, and from the deep right. Now Glenn Beck rails that the “Left is going to rise to violence” against everyone else. These people need to be called out repeatedly for their lies and anti American values. Daily. Hourly. Talk to everyone you know. Bring this up in conversation. Get involved in a campaign, volunteer your time and any available money. Get out there with signs. We’re in deep folks, it’s not going to be easy being American or Alaskan in these next few months. Thanks again Desa for getting me out there to your rally, I hope to see you again soon.

Hope to see you again at another worthy cause. This country is too important to let the likes of Beck and Palin take over. Thank you..you are doing great work!

One of the folks at one of the events in AK was dressed up in something that looked like an old fashioned British highwayman. One comment about that reads:

“The dude in the mask is dressed up as Guy Fawkes, the wingnut patron saint of things that go boom. Obviously the Republican mainstream made a right turn at scary and now has landed directly on stark raving mad.

Or maybe they think he’s from the Fawkes News Network”

Just had to share that one.

    • 28.1
      mag the mickNo Gravatar says:

Nope, nope, nope…The masked protestor was indeed wearing a Guy Fawkes mask, but it is a direct reference to the character “V” in the graphic novel and film “V for Vendetta”. The historic Guy Fawkes was tortured and killed by the soldiers of King James I (who brought us the King James Bible). Jimmy’s realm was virulently anti-Catholic, anti-pagan, and anti-everything else that did not confrom to a strict, Calvinist-inspired, state Church of England. He is considered, by some, to be an early freedom fighter, and by others, a martyr to the Catholic faith. In “V for Vendetta”, a namelss, faceless victim of a sinister, future regime in England wears a Fawkes mask as he single-handedly destroys this “neo-fascist, Christian values” government. Check out the film on Netflix or read the book.

Absolutely disgusted by this slimy Beck/$arah/Fox exploitation of such a tragic event in our nation’s history! You are in total denial if you are not enraged by this book promotion/sham/liquor scam/lie fest/misformation concert/bigot fest etc, etc. So the only defense is when teahaters scream they gave their speaking fees to charity. Pathetic! So who gets the cut of the concessions ($4 beers, etc- though Beck was a recovering alcoholic), paraphernalia sales, book promotion/sales, a free show and free advertising (covered by the North Productions- who is that?)? It goes on an on! Straight out- these are Murdoch’s hate puppets. Beck’s ‘charity’? It’s “Special Operations Warrior Foundation” and although I’m sure they’ve done *some* veterans/families *some* good, the mere thought of the ‘Foundation’ makes my skin crawl.

As Time Magazine noted about the Mall Extravaganza:
      “““““““““`
This flood of money comes to SOWF at an interesting time. Legislation passed by Congress in 2009 amends the GI bill to provide children of all military personnel killed in the line of duty after September 11, 2001 with full scholarships equal to in-state tuition for a public university, plus a stipend for living expenses and books. This largely duplicates what SOWF does, although Rosenthal said funding from her organization will cover tuition for children whose parents were killed before 9/11 and will also supplement the new government funding. The GI bill, for instance, only pays for four years of college, while SOWF will pay for students to attend school longer if they need to. SOWF also pays for more expensive private college tuition and provides money beyond the limited stipends included in the legislation. [/snip]

      “““““““““`
He surely knows the $206K President-CEO John T. Carney Jr. is pulling in, is ON TOP of his [Carney's] retirement from the military? AND that it’s 6.28% –yes, six point two eight percent– of the Foundation’s annual ‘expenses’? That any monies raised for the ‘Foundation’ ONLY go to “Special Ops” veterans/families? NOT to the *larger* pool of wounded, needy veterans and/or families? Or to families of those killed *Unless* the member was SpecOps?

Glenn Beck, to my way of thinking, has a p3rv3rted idea of what a “hero” is — he seems to fancy himself as one as he shamelessly exploits *others* for his *own* gain. I can assure you, though, by his every action, deed, misrepresentation, and out-right lie, he is NOT a hero, nor will he EVER be. He is a plain and simple scam artist who is aided and abetted by those who fall for his snakeoil claptrap.

I can honestly tell you this: If Glenn Beck were perishing from thirst, I would cross the road to give him a drink of water, but you can also be danmed sure I’d give him a talking to like he’s never had before; I’d set his young a55 straight and he’d never, Ever, pull any of this dupe-the-public-for-my-personal-gain-and-glory malarky on *anyone* again! Ever! beth.

FWIW — For *my* money, if you’re of a mind to donate money where you KNOW it will do good for our veterans and men and women in uniform (and/or their families), you might want to donate it to a LOCAL veteran’s organization or one of the top-rated, vetted programs listed here: http://www.charitywatch.org/toprated.html#veterans

Any of these 7 (from the above link) would be a far sight better than the one Glenn is pumping *follower’s* money into by pulling on their heartstrings:

“I talk to my parents every day. Both of them lived through WWII. My Dad was in Germany (which was particularly harrowing since he was a US citizen) and my Mom was in Japan. They are both frightened by the historic parallels they are seeing. Yesterday, I was thinking about how events seem to resonate but we are reluctant to conclude that terrible things can happen again. We can pretend that everything is different now or we are unable to fathom how the current state of paralysis can break. Yet history teaches the contrary over and over. No wonder people hate history.

The politicians anesthetized the populace with debt consumption. But those days are over. People are in a struggle. Extremism is going to accelerate. Last week’s anti-Moslem fervor was a single facet of  ”scape goading” and xenophobia which is what will drive this in the name of God. We are going to hear so much about God. God and country. How many times have we heard those words leading up to war?

I just want to add that the power elite are very familiar with historical cycles and how to manipulate the masses. They accuse outsiders of being quacks (nswfm note: not like the protesters–Beck’s really a quack), Meanwhile what do you think the Bilderberg Group and Skull and Bones etc are busy studying? Are we expected to believe that those billionaires surrounded by zero sum strategists from the military etc are not planning how to deal with the next crisis and how to turn it to their advantage?”

        Some food for thought.

How did I miss you, Jeanne? There weren’t too many punters under the age of 60 in attendance, no?

So happy to see all the folks turn out and all the signs !
Every one was my favorite until I saw the next one :-)
Thank you Spouse o AKM for the pics!
    And you too AKM !
Thinking I’ll probably have to skip the next installment…
The get together we had here at the ‘Flats to talk and think and reflect on September 11, 2001 was enough for me.

The media pays attention to the sensational instead of the substantive. They gave much too much exposure to Rev.Jones’s arson plot. In the past, they happily spread the John Kerry Swift Boat lie without ever fact checking the material to see if it had any substance. (Ooh, not, we’re just reporting what the ad said, not that it’s true). The only reason that Beck and Palin are doing so well is that every one of their stunts is sure to be broadcast and written about, blogged and tweeted. They don’t deserve the attention. Unfortunately, newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, and every other form of media is fighting for an ever-shrinking slice of the attention pie, so what Bristol wore to dance rehearsal or what Paris had in her purse is treated as if it were real news. We really have to stop treating celebrity-entertainers as if they have political wisdom. They don’t. They are just using politics as their cash cow. It’s their act, and we’re falling for it.

    Glad you survived Poo-Loozah!
What did that have to do with 911. What a bunch of carpet baggers. And the people that gave them $$ to listen–why not just listen to one of their recorded speeches? They’re the same thing over and over.
And I’d rather give my money to the charity of my choice than let Beck choose.

I think if had been there, I might have made signs like this:

“Worst governor ever” with a picture of a grizzly in lipstick

“Quitter on Twitter” with one of her really bad tweets

“Yes, I do wash my hair. Once a year whether it needs it or not.” With one of her greasy hair pictures. Yes, I know I have a fetish about her greasy hair. :-)

Glenn Beck–he lights up a room when he leaves.

“Beck–the answer to the water shortage” with a picture of him crying

“Big girls don’t cry. Just the little ones” With a picture of Beck

” I could afford a ticket to Beckapalooza because I have the Canadian health care plan”

“I could afford a ticket because of my Socialist Alaskan check”

“Troops for Sarah’s miniskirt” with pic of miniskirt and panting pit bull drooling on the red monkeys

“Good fences make good neighbors. Hire a professional” with a picture

“Love your neighbor as yourself.” with a pic of Joe

    “Love one another”

“The brains behind the throne” with pic of Todd intimidating the teacher

“The throne behind the brains” with Todd’s socialist snow mobile and Chavez (snow machines make snow. In any of the states. Get over it.)

Hand us your money Alaska, and we’ll feel your love” with pic of Beck’s gold scheme

“Quitternator’s accomplishments:” with a picture of her quitting

OK. I have to go now.

Mostly a lot of sheeple going in thinking they were superior to the protestors but they seemed to be more confident because they went in largely as couples. A few askance looks but little verbiage. To me it’s unfathonable that there are so many who are willing fools and tools of such obvious scammers. I’m an agnostic ; it’s hard for me to believe if man was created in god’s image this is how man would be.

You really did take one for the team this time. I could only listen to about 30 seconds of the Wasilla video before my ears started to bleed from that harpie’s voice.

I am sure the couple hundred people at the Wasilla event didn’t mind being held up because Palin couldn’t organize her morning.

It’s a good thing Palin doesn’t take unscreened questions, because someone might ask her if she agrees with Eddie Burke that Hitler is a hero.
