Open Thread – Happy New Year!

For me, this pretty much sums it up. I never thought I’d be on the side of the one dousing the elderly with pepper spray, but… Go 2012!

Wishing you all more love, directed energy, optimism, good work, health, and happiness for the new year.

Yes,2011 stunk on the public front, in so many, many ways.

But the things which make everyday life rich were many and welcome
Lil grand guy learning to walk and laughing all the while,
Garden full of fresh yummy food
    Gatherings for music
Time and conversation with people I love
Neighbors sharing labors and food and laughs

    I have hope for 2012

I’m sitting here this morning thinking of the college friend who first introduced me to “Hope is the Thing with Feathers”.
She had more on her plate than most people could handle, so very much more than any of the rest of us .
In times of difficulty she would recite this poem like a mantra.

The wind is blowing here and it is snowing. I’m drinking hot tea and listening to my local NPR station playing Beethoven’s Ode to Joy.
I’m remembering all the times I heard Meggie coming down the hall , along the walk, through the quad, singing the Ode to Joy at the top of her lungs when something had gone well. Her passionate enjoyment of everyday life infected and enriched all of us who were friends and classmates. It still does.

        Hope and Joy to all!

Happy New Year to one and all !
2011 was an eye opener, wasn’t it ? A lot of people got rude awakenings as to what’s going in in their local and State Goverments, and are finally speaking up and DOING things about it . We’re outta Iraq, Osama is gone, and the Republicans have put on quite a circus for us to watch.. the debates, the near shutdowns of goverment and their latest – trying NOT to give a tax break to the middle class !! for all the angst caused by them, it’s finally turning around ! and the best of it all Scarah is a has-been !
on a personal front, the the year started out crappy with family events, but things got better thru the year, especially meeting Bear Woman, Alaska Pi, InJuneau and Firecracker..was the highlight of the year ! ( One of our group on the ship snapped a few pics that I’ve GOT to send to you !)

2012 WILL be better – for ALL of us !

A guid New Year to ane an’ a’!

That’s a Happy Hogmanay to you Forty Watt and to ALL.
My favourite description of this Scottish tradition is: Hogmanay “is a time when people who can inspire awe in the Irish for the amount of alcohol that they drink decide to ramp it up a notch.”

AKM and the Mudpup Family has held the line and raised the beacon high for so many of us who are kindred spirits around the globe. In this all important year, may we “ramp it up a notch” and truly take responsibility – even more – for creating the world we envision. It’s a new day!

Canadian Country Girl, that did make me laugh. Mr. Forty Watt and I were born and raised in Fife and came to the US as adults, but neither of us ever heard that definition of Hogmanay. It will be repeated! :D

We have Stuarts (rather than Stewarts) all starting with great-great aunt Agnes who was a poet – Agnes Stuart Mabon. She was the only one with the sir name before she married, but it seems to have made a large impression because just about every last blessed soul in my family (except the Forty Watts) has Stuart as a middle name. I can only conclude it’s a very good thing to be. :)

There were certainly many challenges in 2011 – personally, nationally and globally.

Perhaps my anticipation comes from a spirit weary of conflict and strife, or perhaps just from a hope that the new year will dawn brighter for all of us. Whatever the inspiration, I am convinced that 2012 will bring many wonderful surprises, relief to those who are struggling, joy to those who have been burdened by sorrow, and new opportunities for those who are ready to spread their wings.

I wish all who visit here – AKM, the Mudflats team, mudpups and hushpups – a new year filled with happiness, health, family, friends, and a more peaceful, safer world that embraces all who reside here.

All such milestones (so called) often give me pause, make me wonder, why we have such a penchant for counting time. By and large I think it is because ultimately we all come to sense that it is limited. We also come to realize that its perception is relative. Not in the scientific sense, but purely in terms of the fact that the older you get, the more quickly it seems to pass. It might be wise to educate youth more with respect to the value of time, not in the form of trite truisms, but in terms of the evident merit of it seeming, to the young, to dawdle and drag. Soon enough you might wish it could continue so.

Happy New Year everyone! Reading through all the posts has already made me feel more hopeful about the 2012. For our family, we had some very sad times and some very happy times and challenges we never expected. But one of the best things to come out of the challenges our little grandson faces was that my youngest daughter and I have started singing together again. She had the idea to make a CD for him and we did it together. It turned out to be a lovely gift for him and a lovely gift for the two of us as well. Even though it took up a lot of time in December when I needed to be doing other things, all that singing of quiet children’s songs was a lovely way to end the year.

AKM, and all, thank you for keeping all of us sane as we enter another year of intense politics. It’s not so much that I find comfort in knowing I’m not the only one out there who thinks like I do, but that whatever is going on is discussed rationally and always with a sense of humor.

One of these years, I’m hoping to be able to look back on the past year with gratitude for all its blessings, but I suppose that’s a little speculative. It seems we tend to recall the trials and tribulations as we kick off the new and toss out the old. But, if we really think about it, we can all surely come up with something that worked out for us, or a person who was especially kind to us, or maybe a blog that made us feel welcome and important to others ;)

2011 was not one of my best years, but I hesitate to dismiss it, since there were so many good parts that more than made up for the bad. I was heart broken and incredibly angry when my Representative, Gabrielle Giffords, was shot almost a year ago, yet the local and national outwelling of love and support showed me what human kindness can do. Last spring, my house was robbed, and my computer and treasured collection of old Native American jewelry were stolen. But friends chipped in to buy me a new coputer, and lots of old friends raided their jewelry boxes to send me starters for my new collection. I think I have learned that for every negative occurance, there are three or four positive occurances. For Palin’s crosshairs, there was Obama’s incredible speech in Tucson, and a fund-raising concert for a foundation set up to assist the Tucson community, at which Jackson Brown and David Crosby played, and at which Alice Cooper served as a low-key, affable master of ceremonies. For my smashed-in window and empty jewelry box, there were neighbors who came immediately to put in a new window, and packages in the mail within days. I can’t let go of that kind of kindness.

May we all learn to keep our hearts wide open in 2012, to give kindness and grace whenever we can, and to welcome it right back!
