Open Thread: The Seed Catalogs Are Arriving!

By Linda Kellen Biegel

I received my first seed catalog today from Bluestone Perennials! While they have a great website, there is just nothing like turning the slick, shiny pages of beautiful flowers while I plan the garden layout in my head.

I guess it’s like porno magazines for gardeners!

Feel free to discuss the news of the day or escape into garden-land for awhile!

Hard for me to imagine the AK winters. I just picked lettuce from my garden last night. We will pick broccoli for dinner tonight. Two growing seasons in the desert is great! On the other hand, 115F in the summer doesn’t make it worth it. (panting and sweating at the thought)

    Pretty pink posey!

So Virginia has stalled the “informed consent” transvaginal probe legislation after a thousand people showed up at the capitol to protest, but efforts to eliminate the legislation did not pass.

As for Mitch Daniels of Indiana and his (way far) right, make that Wrong, “thinking” ilk who vilify the Girl Scouts should never enjoy another thin mint, the misogynist idiots. If you give a misogynist a cookie…
he should choke on it is all I’m saying. For now.

And for all the candidates and their supporters who think some of us aren’t the right kind of people and don’t practice the right kind of faith, I share this from my littlebird, who is a left kind of Jew like her mama, and believes we all have right to practice our faith or lack thereof as we see fit, ‘cauce that’s what freedom means: A”protest song about barriers”

WHY, WHY, WHY is this not being discussed in the states that are proposing this kind of bill????

Do the legislators considering these bills not realize that they are, in effect, legalizing rape or are they SO desperate to humiliate women considering abortion that they just don’t care?

And why is there no outcry from the doctors who will essentially be forced to perform sexual assault?

And I still haven’t heard anyone talk about who is supposed to pay for this expensive, medically unnecessary, invasive procedure.

I forgot to mention, that I wrote a long letter to our Iowa Democrat Senator–Tom Harkin. I told him how I felt about what is being said by Rick Santorium, and the War on Women’s rights. Also that I didn’t appreciate Rick S, just standing there and not saying anything, when a woman in the audience was talking about Obama being a Muslin. He (Rick S) said that he didn’t think it was his place to correct her. I went on to say that the way Rick S, sees women in America is the same as the Taliban that we are fighting in Afghanistan .
I asked Sen Harkin to join other Democrat Senators and start fighing to bring back Sanitay to our elections–or whatever they can do to protect us from people like Rick Santorium that are running for the highest office in the land.
I only have my opinion and 1 vote.

The debate tonight is more of an equestrian show jumping competition. The rethuglican thoroughbads tonight will showcase their abilities to jump to erroneous conclusions around every obstacle placed in their way. They will be judged only by their stately form and showmanship. They will not be judged on substance or vision. With any luck, they will stumble, break a leg and be put out of our collective miseries on national telly.

I saw video of the protest in Virginia and it was very powerful. For those of you who hadn’t heard about it, there are strict laws in Virginia which place restrictions on protests…no shouting, no signs, etc. If the usual protests happened, they would have been quickly removed and probably arrested.
One protester commented that the legislators were used to seeing the traditional kinds of protests anyway and would just ignore them.

However, once again, the power of social media was put to good use and a different kind of protest was organized in a matter of days. A thousand people gathered at the capitol and lined the roads and paths. They were absolutely silent and just stared down the legislators as they passed.

Because it was so different from the usual crowd, screaming and waving signs, it made a strong impact on the people passing. Obviously, it made a few of the legislators think twice about what they were about to do. Hopefully, when a vote is finally taken, this heinous bill will be defeated as it should be.

      Way to go, Virginians!

I particularly like some of the shirts people were wearing. One woman had a shirt that said simply:

        Mother
        Doctor
        Voter

I think that is what is needed in this day of protests – and there is so much to protest. We have to do something that is different than what they have been seeing to get their attention – and above all else, it MUST be non-violent.

          Non-violent – absolutely correct.

It seems as though many in Washington DC and the state capitals need to be repeatedly reminded that THEY work for US. We put them in office and pay their salaries. The decisions they make should be to make our lives better, NOT pad their own pockets or fulfill some fanatical religious objective.

Checked off the dentist appointment, grocery shopping, working on the juice spots on the carpet (grape juice on gray carpet…arrghhh!) and cleaning the kitchen. Still have to meet with the roofing contractor, do my taxes, find a home improvement loan, buy a new dishwasher, clean my office, bathroom and bedroom, do about a dozen loads of laundry, sort and donate some old clothes, clean out the pantry and freezer…..

My reward for getting all my chores done? Planning my garden, ordering my shrub seedlings, reading my new gardening magazines and looking through my seed catalogs!

Democrats see the glass as half full. Rethuglicans see the glass as theirs. I hear the new personhood bill gives embryos the same rights as korporations and rill people. So your embryo can drive to the liquor store by itself, buy itself some booze and lavish all the cash it wants on buying it’s own elections. New parents apparently will have no say as to whether their fetus goes to school or stays out late or hangs around with seedy rethuglicans. Something tells me these new personhood bills are gonna bite rwnj asses hard. BTW-I get my first four or five seed catalogs the week before last Christmas. I have already received second catalogs from some nursuries.

I think it should be illegal to discriminate against a fetus based on sex, race, or sexual orientation.

and since life begins at conception, people should have the right to vote 17 years and three months after exiting the birth canal.

Then again, didn’t Ayn Rand write in one of her books about how no woman should be forced to carry a child in her womb against her will?

Once again, the law of unintended consequences will result in chaos because the GOP was so hell-bent on pursuing their religious agenda that they didn’t look ahead and see what else this law might affect.

“There are over 25,000 references to ‘person’ in the Virginia Code, and numerous untold impacts upon the laws of the Commonwealth as a result of the passage of HB1,” said Del. Charniele Herring (D-Alexandria), another member of the Courts committee. “This bill will affect everything from the laws of inheritance to redistricting. It is unfortunate that the proponents of HB1 did not listen to or address our concerns.”

    What war on religion?

    http://motherjones.com/politics/2012/02/what-war-religion-obama-catholic-charities

“Nothing came of the protest, and the grants eventually expired. But the Detroit Rescue Mission is still receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal funds annually. On its website, it touts itself as the nation’s largest nonprofit recipient of grants from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“To apply for a job with the rescue mission, applicants are required to pledge agreement with the group’s statement of faith, to identify one’s church and pastor, and to answer a host of questions about their religious beliefs, including, “What does it mean to you to have Christ as Lord of your life?”

“If Obama was really bent on waging war on religion, some of these contracts might be the first to go. He hasn’t touched them.

“But if Obama thought that keeping evangelical and Catholic religious organizations flush with federal money would earn him their political support, he’s now discovering that’s just not the case. And not only has he come under fire from right-wing religious groups, he’s alienated the progressive religious groups who might be his natural allies. “Obama hasn’t changed anything,” Lynn says. “We’ve got more money, arguably, with no additional strings attached going to the same groups that often discriminate on the basis of religion in hiring.”"

I like to look at the catalog websites for bed-planning and inspiration but in my life anything that comes to my work or home gardens generally arrives in 4-6″ pots or those large 6-packs. I tried starting things from seed for two springs, many years ago, once in natural light and once under a grow light that I had installed, and it was an epic fail on both counts. I don’t have enough light in my home (we are in very wooded location) and lacking a greenhouse I’m just out of luck with the seed thing. While I am totally addicted to gardening I tend to have more success if someone else starts the seeds and gets them to a reasonable size.
