Mead’s In. Lt Gov. Treadwell announces for Senate Run

Treadwell

To nearly no ones surprise Lt. Governor Mead Treadwell has announced that he has filed the necessary paperwork to run for the US Senate in the 2014 Republican Primary. So now we’ve got Joe Miller and Mead Treadwell running to unseat incumbent Mark Begich. Should be an interesting election season. Question is, if Mead loses, will he bow out with grace or run an ugly independent run like a certain other Senator. Below the photo is Treadwell’s announcement from his site – which is now  www.TreadwellAlaska2014.com STATEMENT BY ALASKA LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR MEAD TREADWELL Lt. Gov. announces he will not seek…

The Drone Ranger: Obamas Dirty Wars

Rick Rowley-1

About the time Barack Obama ordered the drone strike that killed Abdul-Rahman al-Awlaki, the 16-year-old American kid Facebooked his second-rate choice of hip-hop favorites. I say “second-rate,” because Abdul was my son’s age almost exactly, so I know the kind of crap they listen to. From Greg Palast Originally for Vice Magazine Every Tuesday, President Obama personally checks off the names of people he wants killed.  George Bush, a bit more squeamish than Obama, never did that; but Mr. Obama felt those decisions were the president’s responsibility: he want[s] to keep his own finger on the trigger,” according to one…

Oh, For Fox Sake… She’s Back.

061713_atss_640

Fox News has a brand new commentator, worthy of their rich and storied journalistic tradition. It’s Sarah Palin! And it’s dejà vu, all over again. Today, Alaska’s former half-term governor once again debuted on America’s “Fair and Balanced” network. Bespangled in a ruffly pink sequined shirt and five-inch spiky heels, she shared what she’s been up to, since her ash-canning from the network in January. In case you were worrying that her literary voice had fallen silent on the issues of the day, fear not. “I am doing great, very busy, of course, with my two beautiful grandkids,” she said….

Bird of the Week – Tufted Puffin

Tufted Puffin, Seward Sealife Center

There aren’t a lot of sea birds that are more spectacular than a Tufted Puffing in breeding plumage. This fancy fellow works as an educational bird in the Sea Bird Aviary at the Seward SeaLife Center. Technical stuff: Olympus 1D-X, 300mm lens with a 2.0 teleconverter, f6.3 at 1/500, ISO2500, handheld. And if you live in Alaska and haven’t visited the Seward SeaLife Center, you’ve missed a treat.

It’s Flag Day! So here’s some flags!

Taken minutes before my arrest during the #D17 Duarte Park protests - this awesome Occupier - who was on rollerskates, on top of a ladder wearing a short skirt... posed for all of us photographers.

I love Flag Day. It’s the one day that (maybe outside of July 4th) that people get into flags. When I was in elementary school I won 1st place in every Flag Day competition (they were mostly collages). Oddly I don’t even know the history of Flag Day – but I don’t care… usually these things have some horrible racist and or genocidal (see: Columbus Day). If you’re interested – go to google.com and google “Flag Day.” Don’t post what you find in the comments. I like living in ignorant bliss. Anyway. I’m going to go tomorrow and buy a…

Wild Tigers For Sale

Screen Shot 2013-06-13 at 4.34.07 PM

You may remember in Ohio, in October 2011 dozens of wild animals escaped (or were released) from a private zoo. Local police had to go on a suburban game hunt – killing among others 18 Bengal Tigers. Stories like that may become more and more frequent – as a petition from the World Wildlife Foundation warns. The WWF says that currently there are more tigers in private ownership – as in pets – than there are in the wild. “One of the world’s largest populations of tigers exists not in the wild—but in captivity in the United States. With an…

Joe Miller Met Mayor Dan Once, It Went Awkwardly.

Screen Shot 2013-06-13 at 4.36.22 AM

Joe Miller, age 46, US Senate Candidate came out of seemingly nowhere to beat incumbent and heir to the throne Senator Lisa Murkowski in the 2010 Republican primary. She then ran as an “Independent” – and won. Leaving Joe to fester in Fairbanks and become a lowly blogger. Now he’s running again – this time against Democrat (no, I’m sorry… “Independent”) Mark Begich who used to have…Mayor Dan Sullivan’s current gig. Mayor Dan Sullivan, age 61, son of Mayor George Sullivan now is running, um… for something. In 2010 he was spending a lot of time with a party planner…

Voting Rights Act Decision Nears on Anniversary of Evers Death

Notables of the civil rights movement seated in the Supreme Court to hear challenge to Section V of the Voting Rights Act include John Lewis, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.

Sometime in the next couple of days the US Supreme Court will decide if crucial components of the Voting Rights Act will stand. Which is why when I saw this court room sketch posted on the excellent SCOTUSblog I felt the need to post it. From right to left you see Jess Jackson, Al Sharpton and then on the left John Lewis. All of these men, to varying degrees fought hard for this act – and lost many friends along the way. Greg Palast, who has been at the forefront of fighting the Right’s (and sometimes the Left’s) push to limit…

I Agree with Sean Parnell, well… kinda.

Parnell-Awkward

It looks like our dear Governor’s social media director has taken the night off and let the Captain Zero himself take a swing at 140 characters. Jeanne and I hit upon this on while subbing for Shannyn Moore Monday Night (listen to the podcast). After a 3 day hiatus on twitter Parnell slammed out three tweets in one day. Woah slow down there bucko – you might break the internet. But ok – let’s look at what he said. The first – I actually agree with (I know, I almost fell out of my chair too)… We need a public…

Pebble Mine – Got Plans?

menu

What’s for dinner? “No plans.” Really? You sure have been looking at that menu a long time. “NO plans.” Um. Alright. “Stop asking me questions.” So no plans for dinner? “No. Absolutely not. But we’ll be feeding 2500 people dinner for five years. The tax and tip will be ballparked between $136 million and $180 million – and that would be on top of the $1.2 billion per year for groceries.” How do you know all the particulars with no plans for dinner? “Shut up. I said we don’t have a plan.” Really. That’s what the Pebble Partnership is telling…
