Examining the Vote Count – the Alaska Senate Race Goes On…

…and the beat goes on. Today the Joe Miller campaign issued a press release regarding the latest news on their attempt to get information out of the Division of Elections.  Think of the Joe Miller campaign as a dentist, and the Division of Elections as a rabid hippo with a toothache.

The Miller campaign is certainly not the first to have issues with the mechanics and transparency of the Alaska vote count.  They’ve even taken the chance their press release will spontaneously burst into flame, and have cited and linked to the complaint from the Dems back in 2004.  They EVEN called it “the Democratic Party” with the “ic” on the end.  It almost makes the heart flutter.  The Democratic Party would have been the last dentist to try this.  It was last seen in chest waders, walking into the river with a giant pair of pliers.

There’s even a little number cruncery at the end where they talk about the number of ballots cast for Miller vs. the number of “uncontested” ballots cast for Murkowski.  Obviously the Miller campaign is in complete control over how many of those are contested, and it has nothing to do with whether they are contested for legitimate reasons or not… but it is what it is.

Tomorrow will be the last day to accept ballots sent absentee, which presumably means that at this late date most of the ballots will be from military personnel overseas. What that means is anyone’s guess, although the Miller clan is hopeful that most of those will be cast for him.

The Murkowski folk are equally optimistic about their gal’s chances to pull this thing off, and the gap between the candidates is certainly wider than the Miller people would like.  The questioning of some ballots which appear to have no errors whatsoever has them irritated.

Here’s the latest release from the Miller campaign about the part of all this in which ALL Alaskans have skin in the game – even Democrats.  The Division of Elections has released some…. but not all of the information requested. Baby steps.

Division of Elections Grants Miller Campaign Access to Precinct Logs; Not Voting Machine Tapes

Anchorage, Alaska. November 16, 2010 — The Joe Miller campaign is pleased the Division of Elections will allow access to several precinct registers for review; however, the Division has not responded to the campaign’s request to review the voting tapes generated by the voting machines at the polling places. These tapes tally the total number of votes cast.

The Joe Miller campaign filed suit last Friday in state court in Juneau in order to compel the State to fulfill its legal obligations under the Public Records Act and allow inspection of the election registers from certain precincts that voters signed before casting their ballots. The Division of Elections had been unresponsive to the Miller request. The lawsuit simply asked that representatives from the campaign be given access to inspect the election registers.

Given the contested nature of the election, time is of the essence to ensure the vote count is trustworthy and that each valid vote is counted, and that there is no opportunity for fraud to taint the election results. Irregularities at polling places have been noted both Election Day and during the ballot review process including sworn affidavits testifying to unsecured ballot boxes and ballot envelopes arriving in Juneau presorted by the Senate race: these ballots are not to be handled in this fashion prior to the write-in review.

Miller Campaign Chief Counsel Tom Van Flein noted, “The campaign determined that inspection of precinct registers was an appropriate audit to spot check the process. The registers will provide data on the number of people who signed in to vote which can be matched with the number of votes tallied for each precinct.”

Another essential verification of the vote totals will be a review of the voting tapes created by the vote counting machines from the precincts. The Miller campaign has requested a review of the tapes from certain precincts, but thus far the Division of Elections has refused to respond to this request.

Miller campaign spokesman Randy DeSoto said, “The review of these tapes will help ensure the accuracy of the vote count. The Alaska Democratic Party brought suit against the Division of Elections in 2006 because of the wide variation in the Division’s “Official Results Statewide Summary” and the “Statement of Votes Cast” reports. The Democratic Party’s complaint noted in 2004 there was a 77,546 vote discrepancy for Lisa Murkowski between the two reports. We want to avoid any such reason to doubt the results in this election.”

DeSoto added, “At the end of six days of ballot counting, the race between Joe Miller and Lisa Murkowski is still very close. The number of Joe Miller votes is 90,448, while the number unchallenged votes for Lisa Murkowski stands at 84,563. If current trends continue, Murkowski’s final unchallenged tally will be in close proximity to Miller’s total. Additionally, there are hundreds of ballots yet to be counted including those from overseas military personnel, which may draw the overall numbers between the Miller and Murkowski even closer. The race is far from over.”

OK, you guys do something to distract the DoE and I’ll get the novacaine.

    Love that illustration, AKM. hahahhaha

  2. REALLY says:

SO there was a difference of almost 200% between the vote count and the the voter sign in sheet.

and none of the papers are examining this issue?

    why not?

    Hey Joe,

The people of Alaska have spoken loud and clear! Time for you to crawl back under
the rock you emerged from and disappear from public view.

If I understood Shannyn’s piece correctly, Alaska has proof the number of votes does not equal the number of voters using the Diebold machines. DOESN’T ANYONE UP THERE CARE???? Besides Shannyn, of course.

I get the impression these voting machines are believed regardless of the facts. What’s the point of voting if the counting is an arbitrary conclusion unrelated to vote totals?

  5. fishingmamma says:

I like your phrase ‘delusional government’. Can I borrow it?

  6. Krubozumo Nyankoye says:

Baker’s Dozen, yes in that one we at least got a reasoning human being. In this one the choice is between the status quo and something much worse.

If I were living in Alaska, I would be deeply concerned that delusional government was going to result in some incredible problems down the road.

Well to be honest, that is really a foregone conclusion. I guess the only remaining question is how will you manage to cope with it?

One thing seems quite clear, you can’t elect politicians with the expectation that they will do the job of statesmen. The irony here is that the only candidate with any credentials as a statesman is not even in the running.

  7. Baker's Dozen says:

    Another energizer bunny vote count.
At least the last one got us Franken.

I don’t trust any points the Joe W. Miller campaign may be making, given the propensity for untruths and obfuscations.

I do not want the DOE to provide anything to Miller or Murkowski without trustworthy adult supervision.

    • fishingmamma says:

“Trustworthy adult supervision” is hard to come by. Remember when Sarah Palin announced herself to be the ‘adult in the room’ with the AK legislature just after she was elected? Nobody challenged that announcement…….

  10. Bretta says:

The ADN just reported that Murkowski write-in votes exceed MilLiar votes by over 10,000 (I don’t think the deadline for absentee ballots is until Wednesday) – about 8,000 are challenged but that still leaves a margin on 1,000.

  11. Zyxomma says:

Ack. Sometimes Alaska politics gives me a headache.

  12. London Bridges says:

Are all the ballots being hand counted, including McAdams’ votes? Or are only the ballots with the write-in box circled?
