What a wonderful beautiful day of comments here at the flats. I must say i think the solstice had something to do with it. I will say that my son is coming for a surprise visit. It has been some 4 years now! You all know how good that feels. Dancin feet-dancin feet!!

    • dreamgirl says:

    don’t block up the halls!
    I ain’t afraid…
    We ain’t afraid!

    • Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

“I’m afraid of what you’ll do in the name of your god…”

Yep, that’s about all I’m afraid of. My god like being is really cool – others, not so much!

I was reminded of this when I attended a service at an evangelical something or other church in September – in the Mat Valley – a few miles from Wasilla. I love my aunt to pieces so this was a favor to her (boy did I ever suffer for this kindness). It was all old testament stuff – and I was supposed to have learned in the sermon that God has “a window of acceptance” for us. If we miss that window – like get confused or forget to listen to God – then that’s it. You don’t get another chance. Uh Uh, no way, no how. If we don’t recognize this window, we aren’t worthy to be accepted.

      • Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

        Knock knock!

        Who’s there?

SARAH PALIN, that’s who and I’m looking for God so I can run through this door he was supposed to open which leads to my window of acceptance and you’re not him because you wouldn’t have to ask “Who’s there?” so where is he, I’m tired of waiting and my daughters are getting prettier than me so hurry the hell up and find him NOW!

    • Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

Oops, sis. Didn’t mean to take your focus away from the core message “I am not afraid…”

And then I sunk into a Palin joke. Don’t hit me.

  8. Winski says:

I don’t know Mud… I been following your stuff for a few years now and it just seems to get better all the time… This series is – quite frankly – amazing…

This may be off topic but it is just priceless – don’t know if anyone has posted it yet – it’s a Yup’ik village doing the Hallelujah Chorus. The whole village and the school kids are involved. Put together by their school teacher

      Go Quinhagak!!!!!
      Go kids!!!!
      Go teachers, parents, communities !!!!
      Go Alaska !!!

  12. G Katz says:

Yesterday I read a story on one of the entertainment sites that $S$a$r$a$h$ Payme was negotiating for a possible season two of $P’s Alaska at a price of $1Million per episode. Ed repeated that on his show tonight. That’s disgusting, and I wonder if it includes all the Payme clan or just the screechy one. If she does it, I think she’s distancing herself farther and farther from even considering a Presidential bid, but who can really predict what that woman will do.

    • Bretta says:

Makes sense – RuPaul is the only one better than her (joking – he’s the only one I’m familiar with) it just makes sense because every picture she’s plastered with makeup and it really seems her act is to play to the little heads.

    • Laurie says:

Best comment to Sarah Palin is really a Drag Queen story: Lady GaGa is going to be furious.

  13. Hope says:

Has anyone ever heard Palin do a Q & A in Alaska as a Governor? Hunting for a video???

    • Millie says:

She was horrible! She answered questions so poorly that the next Press Conference, she surrounded herself w/her Commissioners. A question would be asked and she would defer to a particular Commissioner. She got such bad press about handling things that way that she stopped doing Press Conferences. As so much about Palin’s reign is not accessible to the public – I doubt seriously you are going to find videos available, unless someone copied the press conferences themselves or the TV stations would provide (which I also doubt – especially Channel 2!)

As we are seeing on the national level, she was just as bad in Alaska. Ask Andrew Halco about her – he ran against her for Governor – debated her – he has written some interesting commertary about her throughout the years.

      • Millie says:

I goofed above – it is ‘Andrew Halcro” not Halco.

      • sallyngarland,tx says:

I think YouTube has video of her with the Commissioners. I saw that (very strange) but I can’t remember exactly where. It is out there somewhere.

      President kicks ass!!!

If the GOP had just passed these easily, we couldn’t use it against them like we will now. Idiots.

DADT, START and the 9/11 Responders Bill!!!!!!!!!!!

Why oh why could the Dems not have done this before the election and got the Dem base energized?

      That’s some happy holiday news!

Merry Christmas all you brave men and women!!

    • jojobo1 says:

Good to hear. The republicans were getting a lot of bad press from that hold up as well they should have.

    • dreamgirl says:

Awsome! wonder if Jon Stewart calling them out had anything to do with that! (cowards couldn’t even see how easy that was to do… for our true Heros, our 1st responders!)

First responders who do the job have my most humble appreciation.

    • Wallflower says:

Such good news! I am sorry the DREAM was defeated, but something had to be sacrificed. If we get the DADT repeal, the anti-nuclear proliferation treaty and 911 Responders, that will be good.

      • Nothing should have been sacrificed……it’s not a game-show, it’s the peoples’ business-us…they work for us…they don’t barter and harangue for favors–they do the peoples’ work…sober and important matters. The DREAM act will happen, they deserve it.

    • bubbles says:

lovely. i was in the Polaris Mall having a mani-pedi when i looked up and there on the teevee was Mr Master of the Game talking about what was going on. DADT, START; and First Responders. i sat there grinning from ear to ear. i am so damn proud of this man and grateful that i lived to see this outstanding person sitting in the oval office.
you done good sir. real good. now go enjoy your holiday and your family and friends.

Has everyone else seen the Palin emails update on Mother Jones? Worth a read:

    http://motherjones.com/politics/2010/12/sarah-palin-emails-governor-alaska-delay-wait

From the article: “At that rate, the legal evaluation could take another year or two. And the lawyers’ review is not final. There’s another step. Once the Department of Law examines each page, it provides advice on whether the document includes privileged or confidential information. The governor’s office then decides whether to redact, withhold, or release the document. The current governor, Sean Parnell, a former lobbyist at Patton Boggs (a leading lobbying firm in Washington, DC), ran for lieutenant governor in 2006 as Sarah Palin’s running mate. So, ultimately, the office of this onetime Palin ally will determine what Palin emails will be released. “We do not know yet when the Governor’s office will complete” its review, Perez said.”

Here are a couple very reputable longtime businesses in Anchorage. I ordered King Crab for my mom for Christmas from 10th and M Seafoods. She received it yesterday, and was absolutely delighted!
    http://www.alaskawildberryproducts.com/
    https://www.10thandmseafoods.com/

However, there may be suppliers in smaller Alaska towns who “deserve” business (honest ma and pas who are progressives). Check out google. Seward. Homer. Juneau. Sitka. are “progressive” type cities.

    • Bretta says:

      I love 10th & M Seafoods – always good food.

      • dreamgirl says:

Polly and Bretta, thanks for the info too and also! Supporting local fisherman and local business is the backbone of this country. I refuse to buy from “big box and chain grocery” stores any food products. My dollars go to ecology-centric stores and local shops. I’d rather support the “Mom & Pop” places than BigBox-C.E.O’s golden parachutes.

    • Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

Seward? LOL! No comment, used to live there. Gorgeous location. ‘Nuff said.

  21. Linda says:

I hope this is appropriate for Open Thread: I need, from those of you living in Alaska, a recommendation for a local smoked salmon supplier who deserves some business from out of state. Any suggestions? Thank you.

    • GoI3ig says:

I think “Alaska Sausage” does pretty well. I actually do my own, so I haven’t bought any. Try to google them.

    • fawnskin mudpuppy says:

you need to get in contact with our own mudpuppy, vic, with the salmon processing business!
      i’ll find the infor.
      alaskapi? elsie? where are you?

    • UgaVic says:

Linda …a little mudpup rang the Christmas bells for me to wake up and head over here to let you know we have salmon,….all kinds.

AKM please forgive me for the outright commercialism…..our website is

http://www.briggsway.com Company is Ugashik Wild Salmon Co.

I can tell you that when you buy from us it is 100% Alaskan, is based in a rural village and helps keep our’s and surrounding villages in Western AK going.

You will see the email there to contact us and we usually get back to you pretty darn fast :-))

Thanks mudpups/AKM for me to do a little ‘advertising’

Happy Holidays to all of you..

      • Elizabeth says:

Thank you for giving us information we can use to support the Villages.

      • dreamgirl says:

Wow, thanks Linda for asking about that and UgaVic for the info! I will try to get some for my new shop! Happy Holidays!

        • Baker's Dozen says:

Dreamgirl! Haven’t seen you for a while! How’s business? As soon as you get the salmon, I’m coming in! Driving from CA to Chicago will be a lot easier than driving to AK for my salmon! 🙂

          • dreamgirl says:

Passed inspection! Looking for a few things etc…. I will make you the best cafe au lait with cocoa and the best sandwich evah!

            Happy Holidays!

      • Can you deliver to south Missouri???? That would sure be swell and fabulous…!

        • dreamgirl says:

Wish I could… but my husky-shep says she’s conserving all her winter juices for a new spring pup. (maybe). Think mouthwatering and thirsty thoughts for me and my potential customers.

Looks like I have many options – will be eating lots of smoked salmon to help support these local producers! Thanks to you all for your willingness to answer. May the aurora borealis spread a colorful glow over all of you – my idea of a happy holiday!

    • Valley_Independent says:

So, yes, you have lots of good options.

  22. G Katz says:

I found this link yesterday and can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched it. Sorry if it’s been posted here before, but it’s a sure way to take the edge off if you feel the stress of the holidays creeping up.

    Bob Benner—

Ah, but “Angle” is perfect! As in “Sharron”.

  24. frsbdg says:

About that whole fence thing – what kind of moron goes to Home Depot, buys a few pre-made fence panels, nails them to their existing fence, and thinks it’s a good model for how we should “protect our borders?” Anyone with two brain cells to rub together would look at that and realize what a bunch of nitwits the Palin clan are.

    • Bretta says:

It was the worst fence I had ever seen. I wouldn’t want to walk into their houses if that is the quality of construction.

    • dreamgirl says:

I believe the movie Deliverance explains the Palins quite well.

      (Poor children)

    • Baker's Dozen says:

I think we should all contribute to a Palin Border Fence program. We can pay to have a fence plunked up, with another fence nailed to the top and then do hidden video to see how well if works! 🙂

  25. bubbles says:

    AKM your lyics are wonderful.

  26. Irishgirl says:

To be fair, we are talking about a woman who wouldn’t dare take one of us on in a discussion.
    Nuff said.
Consign this moron to the scrap heap, soon, also too.

  27. Irishgirl says:

I have taken a break from “the palin”…it is good. I have faith in Americans. Whatever about Reagan, palin is a complete pimple on a very pale skin….ready to pop!

  28. twain12 says:

anybody watching President Obama signing the DADT repeal…I’m so moved by this

    • lilybart says:

Me too! A human and civil rights victory in Teabagger America is amazing.

      • Eykis says:

Yes, it is, and just goes to show the Rethuggery Obstructionist Party of Teabagging Fewls they were NOT elected “king of the world” – they still have a Democratic senate and a Democratic POTUS.

      • jojobo1 says:

Wonder how the red shirts in the valley and Anchorage are taking this?????

    • beth says:

Woo-hoo! I’m not only moved, but ecstatic! The man knows what he’s doing!

I’m still miffed, though, at all the progressives/activists who dissed POTUS because he didn’t/wouldn’t sign an Executive Order to stop DADT. They held his not doing so as a sign that he was reneging on a campaign promise and/or that he didn’t care about the issue, and they slammed him mightily — in the process, adding one more thing about/over which people could (and do) fault him. That was –and is– terribly unfair.

Fools didn’t comprehend that if he had signed an EO to stop DADT (which he easily could’ve done!), that signing would never have been viewed as ‘legitimate’; all those on the Right would’ve been pitching hissy fits that he’d ‘overstepped’ his authority and they’d be clamboring for lawmakers to negate the EO and strengthen the DADT law.

As it is, though, he worked to get the bodies that enacted it in the first place, the House and Senate, to overturn it. Now *no one* can say DADT isn’t well and truly a thing of the past. No one can say it was overturned by a power-hungry dictator with a socialist and family-hating agenda; the representatives of the people overturned it — it was the will of the people that it be overturned, not just the will of a single person in the WH who was catering to the gays (and their ‘homosexual agenda’) for votes.

Gadzooks! but he’s one smart cookie. I just wish people (progressives, in particular) would stop demanding immediate action, would start looking at ALL the parameters of an issue, and would quit second guessing him; he knows what he’s doing. His job of getting done those things that NEED getting done would be so much easier if he didn’t have his own ‘side’ abandoning him (and bad-mouthing him) as he makes sure what’s done/changed is not only the right, moral, correct thing to do, but it is also done/changed Solid. beth.

      • KJ in NC says:

Wow, Beth! Beautifully said. Thank you.

      • nswfm says:

He’s needed to be engaged like on the New START treaty all along, and by appearances since the last summer on the health care thing with the T baggers, he hasn’t looked as engaged until after this election. I also wish the whining would stop, but see why it has arisen.

      • Wallflower says:

        I agree.

      • A fan from CA says:

Beth, so well stated. We need to get behind this man and stay there and work to get him a Congress that he deserves. There is still much work to be done and we need to start now to get Progressives elected.

We also need to actively push back on all the nonsense and lies being push out by the Cons.

      • jojobo1 says:

I always felt he knew better than to let the courts decide or sign an ex order as it could have done more harm than good. And yes some progressives have not supported him in endeavors they should have. He could have had more support on the Health care Bill.IMO it never would have gone thru this year as one payer or medicare for all.It would have ended up like Clinton’s did nowhere. And I think young people did not want to have to have insurance they never think something will happen to them,

      • Once again, we see that we have a President who is smarter than most of us – and isn’t that the best news of the day. He did this the right way, even though it took a little longer. And there are at least some repubs who will be on the right side of history.

I agree – there are some progressives out there who are going too far with the rhetoric. In theory, I agree with their POV but they need to look at it from the practical side – what has to be done so something actually GETS done.

      • ks sunflower says:

        Well said, Beth. Thanks.

      • OMG says:

        Beautifully put (as per usual)!

Huck says Palin is wrong and Michelle Obama is spot on right:

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1210/46711.html

    • GAmom says:

OMG, I agree completely with what you said above regarding SP’s overexposure. I also think this latest jabs against Mrs. Obama reinforces her mean girl image as people can clearly sees she distorts what Mrs. Obama is trying to do. In the meantime, the first lady remains very popular and SP is not going to change that whatever she says (she might in fact help Mrs. Obama’s popularity rise as hers continues to decrease).

    • Hope says:

Just read that on Frum Forum.

    • I’m not terribly fond of Huckabee – as a politician he scares me. But I’m so glad he spoke up on the obesity problem. I had forgotten that he was very overweight most of his life, so good for him. And he is right- Sarah, as usual, completely misses the point. And really when you look at photos of her family, she’s slim, Todd looks to be a healthy weight as does Track. But the girls are all a tad pudgy. And I’m not saying that to be mean. But for teens or pre-teens, they look like they’ve had too much fast food and not enough exercise. And that is the point of what Michelle Obama is trying to do. Childhood obesity, or even being a little overweight as a child, and lack of exercise spell health problems the rest of their lives. Sarah and her kids can still have the S’mores (I love ’em), but a few more veggies and fruits as snacks are a great choice.

    • Kilia says:

Sarah attacks ANYONE who has the last name Obama. Why? Because:

      1. She is insanely jealous he won instead of her.

      2. She is also having tizzy fits over them ignoring her.

      • Valley_Independent says:

Exactly. Every time the Obamas keep it classy and refuse to sink to her level after she’s launched yet another of her uneducated mean-girl attacks on them for things like this, I am grateful he won the election and I can say I have never voted for Palin.

  30. barbara says:

so. just heard on the washington journal that this no-nothing end timer thinks we need to do anything necessary to rid iran of nukes. and had an editorial published in USA today to advance that cause. i don’t get it. she has zero credibility as far as i am concerned. yet i see her getting even more popular and she is being paid attention to as something other than a very bad joke. speaks very badly for the future of the country imo.

    • OMG says:

I don’t think she is getting more popular (if poll numbers have any voice) but she is still a curiosity for many–including me. The media will cover her as long as her fans and foes take notice. Those of us who think little of her, love to see her publicly stumble and the media will give her a platform to do so. She is facing over-exposure and the more people see of her mean-girl persona the less they like her.

The sad thing is that many in the print media give a platform for a ghost writer to make her sound at least thoughtful. But as soon as she appears on camera to discuss the issues, it becomes clear that she is a hollow headed fraud.

      • jojobo1 says:

So true about the mean girl persona and her attacks on everyone and anything. After listening to her attacks in her first speech she made me realise that no matter what I was voting democratic. She is an attack dog and nothing else.

    • lilybart says:

But isn’t it GOD’s WILL that there be a Second Coming? Why are they trying to stop it? Why worry about whether someone is the anti-Christ….dont’ they WANT this to happen? 1000 year reign on Earth with Jesus in charge and all? The Jews in the lake of fire?

I wonder if her supporters in Israel know why she is so supportive of them? If they knew that she loves them as long as they fight against the Muslims but when the rapture happens they’ll be left behind to burn with the rest of us.

so far Sarah is leading the pack 🙂

    • Lynn in VA says:

Oh, if only those results were binding! Sadly, she is proving to be rather like a yeast infection: hard to get rid of and damn near impossible to ignore

    • OMG says:

I voted…and it felt good to add to the numbers.

      • Hope says:

I saw she might get a second season. Do that please and don’t run. Is that a hole or peeper in the fence? Yikes.

        • Blueeyes says:

I hope Palin makes such high demands that TLC won’t be able to pay her for her show (if there is a next season). If she did get a second season, it would probably tank because it would be a rehash of her first season. You know like the way her second book is. I guess she has never heard of overexposure.

    • GAmom says:

Thanks for the link, I voted. Sarah is ahead at least in one poll : )

    • G Katz says:

Sarah must be happy to see her numbers rising. Doh! Too bad this one is like hitting the links where lowest score wins.

      Thanks! We added our votes!

  32. Made it through another day,Christmas close at hand, hope to see the Grandkids soon, and Quittybritches has two more days left to rub me the wrong way. Sorry that it doesn’t rhyme.I asked my doctor/actuall a Physicians Assistant who is better than some Doctors I’ve been seen by, if She or the clinic would take actual chickens in lieu of payments and She said no way-Jose. So at least where I get my medical advice, they don’t barter.

Marissa one-ups the Palin girls. Can a Sar-Bris-Low tweet be far behind?

    • Bob Benner says:

Thanks for posting the link to this timely story for Christmas… I see nowhere in the article where any mention is made of an Angle appearing to anyone with the good news about this event… That makes me think suspicious that she might have made the virgin birth thing up to cover for some fooling around that got out of hand (no pun intended)… Those who pushed for Creationism and Intelligent Design in the school curriculum will likely now be pushing for virgin births in Biology class… Sheesh….

      • Bob Benner says:

errr.. I meant to say Angel, not Angle…

      • Bretta says:

Virgin births are very common amongst some species of reptiles – it’s called parthenogenesis. The lizard clones herself, so the result is always female.

Humans can give birth to a clone, where the offspring has all the genetic material of one parent but the other parent’s is not expressed. Still, it requires stimulation of the egg by the activity of all the sperm – it has to do with how the genetic material is divided – so it is sexual reproduction.

Some species of aphids are pregnant with their grandchildren before they hatch – but that is the result of their parents’ fertilization, so it is sexual reproduction.

The girl’s insistence on being virginal reminds me more of Bill & Monica than Mary & Joseph. Bill & Monica insisted they didn’t go all the way, either, therefore did they cheat?

        • Bob Benner says:

Now I’m really confused… Are you saying Jesus was a girl, or Mary was a man?

          • dreamgirl says:

Palins are probably reptiles? Sarah being the parthenogenisis to her “palinbots” and her trying to make her family clones of her: Criminal infantilism. ($arah’s criminal-gates goes w/o saying).

    • beth says:

That story is a hoot! As is the site.

I particularily like the tweets in the right-hand sidebar — currently:
      ““““““““““““““““““““““““““`

      “Today’s 64K ?: Can #Obama be #Impeached 4 #treason, #socialism if he is not a #citizen??? All of u #constitution experts please weigh in.”

“Just received sweetest card from Haley and Marsha Barbour wishing me a white Christmas… Love to you both and to the boys xoxo Deanna”

“Docs cast doubt on teen’s virgin birth story. Glad these doubters weren’t around 2 millenia ago!”
      and,

“Kudos GOP for nixing act 2 stop child marriage. If law was on books in 1BC Mary & Joseph couldn’t have tied the knot.”
      ““““““““““““““““““““““““““`
The tweets all chuckled me but I think the Barbour “white Christmas” one, is the most clever.

Thanks for the link, London Bridges; I’ve book marked it. I figure any amount of levity amidst all the seemingly incessant rightwingery, is a good thing. beth.

      • Any idea off the top of your head as to how White of a Christmas The Barbours would wish on another RWNJ couple? Just wondering and wandering where ever my mind takes me.

    • Evelyn says:

It’s getting tougher to tell what’s real – I clicked on the Michelle Malkin link and can’t believe what I’m reading. Are the links genuine or part of the satire? Is Deanna Swift, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Phyllis Schlafly, a true satirical genius?

    • Bretta says:

I believe virgin births happen all the time – people fool around without realizing the first drop has the most sperm in it. Sure, all the other parts of the process have to be occurring as well, but totally possible.

I still remember more than 35 years ago a classmate who was pregnant – she said he never “got inside” so she didn’t know why she conceived. Technically: virgin birth.

      • jojobo1 says:

So true and I think even today young people forget that

      • Bob Benner says:

If there’s sperm involved, I wouldn’t call it a virgin birth… Unless it’s GOD’s sperm of course… Which would mean that if Jesus was GOD, then any of his children would be virgin births??? Of course, now I’m starting to confuse myself again…

      • I’d heard of that too – and since she admitted that they had fooled around her claim that she is anything like Mary is just reaching for an excuse. I’d be interested to hear if their parents are buying the story. I didn’t know, however, that pregnant teens were still banned from being in school. That was the case back in the 60s when I remember a few girls who didn’t get to finish with their class – except the superintendent’s daughter (cheerleader, who boyfriend was student body president). By the time she graduated and walked across the stage for her diploma there was no doubt that she was well into her pregnancy. But I don’t think she claimed virgin birth.

      • ibwilliamsi says:

Technically – virgin birth. Practically – woefully uneducated.

    • Bretta says:

There are several Haiti pictures of Bristol that makes me think there will be an Annunciation soon – Gryph’s IM blog had one yesterday that BP is getting engaged to Giancinto “Gino” Paoletti, 20, whose family has lived in Wasilla for about 15 years. He helped Bristol buy a house in AZ. The article quoted says that BP wants to have a baby right away. Looks like late Feb / early March to me.

    • ks sunflower says:

What I find a hoot is that thousands of people are supposedly gathering at the hospital hoping to see a glimpse of the “virgin mom.” Oh, my.

That – plus Senator-elect Toomey wants to gift the girl for the birth. Gees, are they administering IQ tests when you register for a political party now — if you score low enough, you get to be a Republican? If you score too high, you have to register as a Democrat?

Is this a real conservative website or a satirical one? I read the About The Swift Report on their site and am almost ready to believe it is until I read this article and a couple of others. This cannot be for real.

      http://theswiftreport.com/?page_id=32

      • ks sunflower says:

P.S. The only reason I almost doubted that The Swift Report was satirical was that I’ve heard a couple of people in my area talk about stuff as nutty as this as if they believed every word.

I think I am glad I have made sure my path and theirs no longer cross. I try not to think about the possibility that some of them actually drive, vote, and mingle with others in public.

      • Wallflower says:

No, it’s obviously a first-class satire site. Excellent job, whoever the writer is! The Tweets just make it perfect.

      • dowl says:

It’s all about increasing the christianist / dominionist birth rates–they vote (with the proper Glenn Beck U indoctrination) and they reproduce. AND they are terrified of others not like themselves.

    • Cortez says:

Oh that was a hoot! But so many clues to tell us that this is a great piece of satire. Virgin birth? 3 delegates? Bethelem? December 25th? The Inn is full, so they have to go elsewhere? Mary and Joseph, Marissa and Josh? I know there is more hidden in there, but the original virgin birth is not one of my strong points.
