Open Thread – No Shooting

Going through a bunch of photos tonight and came across this one – one of my all-time favorites. I snapped this in Eagle River which is about half way between Anchorage and Wasilla.

    Woo hoo!!!

WOR radio in NYC has cancelled the Glenn Beck show due to low ratings.

“This raises lots of questions about what constitutes accepted banter in the Palinsโ€™ Wasilla manse.”

I don’t for one minute believe they even banter. That family does not sit around a table (do they even have one) and converse with each other in any shape or form. What I suspect they do is throw around insults freely with no one stepping up and saying “hang on now…what about this sort of situation?” Discussion would be a foreign word to these Wasilla eedjits.

Having spent 3 weeks free of Palin and the internet, I really have lost patience with this idiocy. There was an article in the NYT today or yesterday about Palin and her use of the word “refudiate.” A number of comments appeared about Palin’s latest pregnancy and I decided to comment about the failure of the MSM in America to vet this woman. I pulled no punches and said the rest of the world was aghast at the failure of the US press to do their job and that no one in their right mind in any other part of the world would even consider this woman as presidential material.

They published the comments about her pregnancy, but didn’t publish my comment about the failure of the press to do its job. So much for “free speech” in the US of A.

I did call her an ethically challenged dimwit and accused the media of being willing to tout her as a serious candidate in order to garner more readership, so maybe that is what upset the NYT.

This column is a reminder about what true leadership is and another example of why Palin is not a leader. (Sorry for posting the column in its entirety but I could not link it.):

Sarah Palin fails to lead on gay equality
    By Jonathan Capehart

Sarah Palin is getting some mileage out of retweeting a pro-don’t ask, don’t tell repeal message from Tammy Bruce. “I’m focused on economic issues, and you may have noticed I was being quiet about DADT because that’s not our most pressing issue,” the openly gay radio host tweeted Monday. “…But this hypocrisy is just truly too much. [Enough] already — the more someone complains about the homos the more we should look under their bed.”

So, I guess we’re supposed to presume that Palin supports the repeal of the ban on gay men and lesbians from serving openly in the military. And I suppose by extension we should presume that she is down with gay equality. But it’s easy to support something that has already happened and costs you little to speak out about — even if it is in the form a retweet. DADT was repealed with 65 votes in the Senate on Dec. 22.

Palin had a chance to take a stand last November when her daughter Willow apparently unleashed the f-bomb (the one that rhymes with drag) on someone criticizing the premier of “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” on Facebook. Bristol Palin seemed to step up with an apology of sorts. But the former governor, reality television star and self-proclaimed Mama Grizzly remained mute. This raises lots of questions about what constitutes accepted banter in the Palins’ Wasilla manse.

Leadership is about staking out positions when it’s difficult, not just when it’s easy. Once again, it seems, Palin has taken the easy route.

The GOP takes another step towards total conformity as evidenced by the lack of disagreement in the RNC debate:

    http://littlegreenfootballs.com/article/37835_What_I_Learned_By_Watching_the_RNC_Debate

Since each candidate for Chairman does not support gay rights, you’ve got to wonder how they would respond to Sarah Palin’s re-tweet (referenced in post #6).

  8. London Bridges says:

Here is a significant magic number to remember: 651.

651 is the number of votes that Sarah received when she defeated John Stein to become mayor of Wasilla. J. Stein got 440 votes that fatal day on October 1, 1996.

651 votes and there are nearly 308 million people living in America as of the 2010 census.

Sarah became a minority governor in 2006 with 48% of the vote. She received 114,697 votes to become governor, fewer votes than the population of many American suburbs.

    114,697 that is all.

    • bubbles says:

      amazing isn’t it?

    • OMG says:

It truly is amazing, especially when so many on the right point to her credentials. I had a discussion, only a couple of days ago, about how she had to hire a city manager to manage the small town of Wasilla. Granted, many small municipalities have city managers, but it just goes to show that Palin was not qualified in administration and had to hire someone to do the job of city administrator. I guess the manager did the actual management and Sarah got to play queen.

    • Bretta says:

…and now most of those people (well over 60 percent) would not vote for her at all.

This sign looks like the “NO HUNTING” signs we have posted on our farm land. Full of holes!

Not much we can do about it, since we don;t live on the farm. So they hunt, fish , and gather mushrooms like they own the place. Guess it is less expensive than owning land, and paying the taxes.

Today was the new moon, the ideal time for prioritizing and affirming your goals. Here’s a guide to great and not-so-great celestial events for the year 2011:

    http://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/space/stories/solar-eclipse-and-meteor-shower-to-launch-2011-skywatching-season

“June 1 โ€“ A partial eclipse of the sun: The zone of visibility for this eclipse covers parts of northeast Asia, where the largest eclipse occurs over Cheshskaya Bay and the Bolshezemelskaya Tundra of far northwestern Russia. Here, the upper three-fifths of the midnight sun will appear bitten away.

The eclipse will also be available to the northern two-thirds of Alaska (an early afternoon event), as well as northern and eastern portions of Canada, where viewers will see the eclipse during the course of their afternoon, as the sun slowly descends toward the west-northwest horizon.”

Hmmm, maybe June 1st would be a good time for mudpups to visit our Alaskan friends living in the northern 2/3 of the state!

I don’t know much else about celestial events, but I do enjoy watching meteor showers and eclipses. They make me feel very insignificant but also part of a very large universe at the same time. Not too many things can do that!

What will the Reactionary Party do now that they’ve got some people in Washington?

    http://www.mybiblelesson.com/mybiblelesson/portal_7803.jhtml

    • Sorry, couldn’t read the link without registering.

But as for your question. I thought it was interesting this morning when one of the new tea partiers was talking about not trusting the people who work in Washington, DC, and I wondered if it occurred to him that he’s now one of them. How long is it going to take for them to figure out that the voters expect them to actually work and not just sit around throwing tantrums and disrupting the business of the government. It’s going to be a long two years if they don’t learn how the govenment works soon.

      • leenie17 says:

But don’t forget that an overwhelming majority of the public sent those TPers to Washignton to fix things, right?

Oh, sorry, it was a small percentage of the even smaller percentage of people who actually bothered to show up to vote in November. They don’t REALLY represent a giant, humongous, enormous, colossal majority of people after all.

        Never mind!

  12. Zyxomma says:

I dunno — maybe they should have just tried hollowing out the Os on this sign. I think there are five of them. O, Alaska …

I remember seeing a TV special many years ago of a Willie Nelson birthday special. It was one of the “big” years – maybe his 60th? Texas Governor Ann Richards filmed a spot where she planned to present Willie with a road sign from the state dept,. of highways with the name of his home town. After picking it up, she looked at it and said “Hmm, this doesn’t look right.” The next scene was of her blasting away at it with a big pistol. When she awarded it to Willie, sure enough it was full of bullet holes. I guess that’s just the way it is in the wild west, or wherever that mentality lingers.

  14. OMG says:

Any guesses as to why Palin re-tweeted another’s support for repealing DADT?

    http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/2011/01/sarah_palin_sup.php

Does she actually support gay rights? Or, more probably, did she misunderstand the comment that she re-tweeted?

    • BuffaloGal says:

There was talk of this on PG and my thoughts are :

When asked recently, she said that DADT should not be repealed at this time. So why did she decide to backtrack from that by retweeting a post with the word “homos” included but with no context ? The person that originally wrote the tweet is a gay conservative talk show host ( and someone who seems to have an online friendship with Mansour ). Tammy Bruce was making the comment that those in the Repub party that keep complaining about the homos might have something to hide. But her tweet came in reference to other tweets about the topic on her show. Palin retweeted only the “homos” post with no explanation and no link back to Bruce’s page or podcast. It was completely bizarre.

If she wanted to show support for gays or for the repeal or for Bruce she could have done it any number of ways. This was just plain ridiculous. That word is not one to be thrown around lightly. It’s bad enough her daughters are out there lobbing about ” gay” and “fagg*t” .

Over on PG I wondered if perhaps RAM was bouncing manically between her own acct and Palin’s and perhaps thought she was retweeting Bruce’s post from her own personal account. She follows Bruce pretty closely and resends many of her tweets. I have my PalinTruthWatch acct and also my business twitter account and have more than once forgotten which I was on.

Whatever the reason, it comes down to it being a ridiculous move and they’re going to take heat for it. Remains to be seen if they decide to stand by it and blame everyone for taking it wrong.

      • OMG says:

Great post…from the look of things, if the media lets the whole thing drop, so will Palin.

    • BuffaloGal says:

ha! I replied to your post OMG but I see you were smarter and knew enough not to use the words from the Palin tweet. I was not as bright and am now in moderation.

      ah well….. it’ll surface eventually.

    • Hope says:

      OMG

Does she actually support gay rights?

I don’t think she does. However, if she does, she will have some explaining to do.

Or, more probably, did she misunderstand the comment that she re-tweeted?

      I am voting for misunderstood!

      • OMG says:

Me too. It will be interesting to see how she (or her ghost tweeter) plays this. She’ll either stand firm in support of gay rights, much to the disgust of her base (just take a look at the stance of every RNC Chairman contender) or she’ll have to back track. Could be interesting.

Nice..real danged nice! If we had that sign..posted between the road I live on..and any place..betwixted the river..half a mile north..it would have looked like that..from about 12 hours after it was posted. Good ol boys of the kind..who are nothing like the truely GOOD ol boys..yuppers a nest of them n buddy group..and the group..seems to only grow. Where they seldom shoot anything that falls in a safer ..arc..they do all ahve ..longrange rifles..but the good news? They used to ..ammo-up..and shoot for half an hour at a time..sometimes more. The ordinence I picked up from the sneak trips they made to the orchard I watch over..could weigh in..at a pound or two, easy. Now..they have modified their shooting..to fast trips..7 to 12 min.and they rotate back onto their own lands. They didn’t much cherish dealing with then but now that I am 73, dealing with breats cancer for the new year..they be scuttlin! I think any woman on this board, and man who has ..girded-up for battle..can tell ya..DON’T..be messin with US! We be ..12 months of ..Pissy-In-A-Can!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I more than ever appreciate that where I live, the signs read “No Rock Climbing Within 50ft. of the Road”. I live where guns are, but we don’t yet need signs on the Highway for the folks using them.
Thanks for the fun shared photo and idea of other ways of living.

  17. tallimat says:

The litter and shot up signs along our highways is disgusting. In Alaska, the shot up road signs are soooo stupid. The mentality behind doing such.

So I started photographing all those shot up signs. The album is a favorite with my grown up kids.
At least a dozen signs show a progression of bullet holes. Same sign, same mountain range behind, just more holes as the seasons changed.

I appreciate a place where the signs are not abused by those with a gun.

    • Juneaudream says:

As in..where this thread started with a photo..and now your comments..could we not..all around the states we live in..some of those who have the skills and equipment, craft a ..photo essay..which could be used in our various schools, and start the younguns off with a solid visual..as to things which must change..idea at a time. 50 states..where might this..go..and more importantly..how fast? In 24 hours, could there be a youtube film..with ideas like this? Are there..some already..of this idea? Hmm..off to search the ‘intertubes’ now… ๐Ÿ˜‰

      • tallimat says:

Be careful now… some urban, petro sucking monster truck owner, with way too many bullets can claim it is art.

Can shooting up signs be considered graffiti?
        http://www.graffiti.org/

A cheap, lazy form maybe… In other places I’ve seen a peace sign crafted with bullet holes on the side of a stucco building.

I do feel all the shooting of Alaska’s highway signs is closer to trash.

I do sit back and wonder why some signs are even there. Like the one posted be AKM. Like it is inviting a couple of shots from one of those urban petrol sucking monster truck owners.

My favorite shooting-from-the-road-next-to-the-No Shooting-sign story was in Washington:

Two buddies see a deer at the side of the road, pull off, in their excitement of getting out of the truck, loading, aiming, firing, the one didn’t see his buddy coming ’round the other side, and boom, got a two-fer.

I think it happened in 2005 – I was visiting my Dad, near Port Angeles.
