Open Thread – Rescue Dog

This painting entitled “Rescue Dog” is from the University of Alaska’s Museum of the North in Fairbanks. You’ve all helped me before with identifying the artist when I was too captivated by the work to remember to take a picture of the little info card.

I couldn’t stop looking at it while I was there, and I couldn’t figure out exactly why.  It was one of the last paintings I saw, and I had to meet my ride to the airport but I felt almost rooted to the spot.  My camera didn’t capture it, but the dog almost seemed to glow with a beautiful iridscent orange light.  I think all of us at one time or another have been each one of the figures in this painting, but it’s hard to be both at the same time.

I found the work online at this website: Artsceneak
The artist is Kay Marshall, the title is Rescue Dog, and it is an acrylic on canvas. She won the Juror’s Choice Award.

Gosh, that’s beautiful. I would love to have that kind of artwork in my home. We recently rescued a dog off the streets…he’s joining a doggy family that includes another rescue pooch, and a nine-year old pooch I’ve had since she was eleven weeks old, when I adopted her from a shelter.

AKM, one of the first posts I ever read from you was your description of picking up a bunch of rescue puppies for transport; how you were determined not to take one home; and how, inevitably, you ended up doing just that. 🙂

Just now gettingaeound to checking in. That is one beautiful painting AK. Living room turned out great yesterday. Moving on to prep for painting the bedroom. This should be enough work to keep me busy and pass the time until spring arrives.

Thanks for keeping us posted MUYS and LMD! That story and video of the last race was a hoot!!!! Looking forward to this one.

I’d like to share an email from sierra club; more on coal mining (of course):

40% of America’s coal comes from the Powder River Basin in Montana and Wyoming. A federal loophole makes the area exempt from the stringent environmental standards that most coal mining areas follow.

Secretary Salazar is considering a petition close the loophole and could make his decision at anytime. Send him a message to hold our country’s largest coal producing region to strict environmental standards.

    Check it out here:

Thanks in advance, mudpuppies and hushpuppies, for joining in this campaign. Until we have a clean energy economy, we have to stay on top of things! Wyoming and Montana are exceedingly beautiful, but both states have a very small population, which means that extractive industries (mining, logging) often go unchecked (as they often do in Alaska). Health and peace.

Rogues Gallery Kennel hits the race trail again Saturday the 29th, in the Tustumena 200 mid distance race!

This race is on the Kenai Peninsula, home territory of RGK and regular training runs. This has its own set of pros and cons. One of the pros is that they don’t have to travel to the race. This doesn’t sound like a big advantage, but it’s always a big deal to load up the truck with racing dogs, cab dogs, sleds, gear, bedding, food, mushers and handlers and arrive at the race start without too many mishaps along the way. They had travel & truck mishap after mishap during their last race in the Copper Basin 300, including almost hitting another musher’s MIA sled on the way home.

One of the cons could be that the dogs are in home and training territory and might not be as excited to race. Somehow I don’t think this is going to be a problem for the RGK rogues, who seem to be about as happy to run as any dogs I’ve ever seen! But the temps are warm, the snow is cement with ice underneath, and Brian the Moose’s relatives have been very cranky along the trails lately. Very cranky!

    http://rogueskennel.com/blog/?p=821

It’s one thing to pee in your mitten by accident (Joseph on the Copper Basin 300 trail), it’s completely another to have a moose get in the middle of gang line, or just as bad, chase you down to knock you off the sled. This is the darker side of Brian and Brenda -or should I say, the wilder side.

We’d love to see a Facebook page for the RGK, but with hubby Joseph keeping up with the blog, being a handler and often a musher as well, all the while taking pictures which transport the reader right onto the trail with them – alas, I think he’s probably a bit busy. This year he’s also following the race on behalf of the newspaper. However, the race has a website and a FB link on the home page. There are some strong up and coming mushers in addition to veteran pros – it will be a great one to follow!

Colleen and Joseph Robertia walk the walk and talk the talk. They rescue and rehabilitate dogs, and somehow get the misfit bunch whipped into a team to look out for! Rumor has it that Colleen has become a musher to watch! She’s a rookie no more, so now she has to be sneakier.

    • Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

They are also friends of lovemydogs, who hasn’t gotten to see them as much lately with new jobs and schedules messing stuff up. Those pesky jobs which get in the way of our fun (but keep the lights on).

      • LoveMyDogs says:

Thanks MUYS, I was going to post about this but you beat me to it. Mudflatters can try to follow the race at the Tustemena 200 web site but they are notoriously bad about posting times well. Hubby, friends, neighbors and I will be at the start to cheer Colleen on and possibly do the all nighter at the Clam Shell Lodge where they take their 8 hour rest (unless things have changed). I love this race because it starts about 5 miles from my house! One of the other problems with racing where you train is that the dogs are used to going on certain trails and can try to take wrong turns (they never forget a trail that they have been on).

MUYS and I will probably try to keep everyone here updated, eh MUYS?

Shhhhh….it’s a secret….but Colleen might be able to win this one and that is their goal (along with keeping all of the dogs safe and well). So put on your mushing hats and cheer her on!!!

        • Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

Yay for lovemydogs, LMD’s hubby, friends and neighbors cheering at the race start! I hope this gives the RGK the home team advantage – minus the not-following-the-race-route part as LMD pointed out.

I would be happy to update but if LMD is here, she’ll have more current info so I look forward to her updates and I’ll just jump up and down a lot and make up some “go dog” cheers. Go rogues!

        • Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

When I saw “Rescue Dog” as the Open Thread it just made me write about RGK.

Here’s another great picture of that painting – it really is amazing and I’m falling in love with it.

“Warning ‘Rush Limbaugh Will Kick Your Ch-nk Ass’”

…“Last week, California State Sen. Leland Yee (D) called on right-wing hate radio host Rush Limbaugh to apologize for mocking Chinese President Hu Jintao and the Chinese language by speaking gibberish “ching chong chang” Chinese on his radio program. Yee, who is Chinese-American and chairs the state Senate Select Committee on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs, said Limbaugh owes the Chinese-American community an apology for his “pointless and ugly offense.” Naturally, Limbaugh did not apologize, and instead railed against Yee the following day on his radio, calling him out repeatedly by name.”…..

Good dog, beautiful painting. As for Bristle speaking about abstinence, it makes as much sense as any of the Grifter Clan’s appearances.

I was just catching up on the latest on Wikileaks and thought this interesting.
    ———————————–

Jeff Jarvis tweets to announce the work of one of his journalism students: Localeaks. The idea is to allow any one of 1400 US newspapers to receive leaks (tips and/or files) from whistleblowers through its online dropbox.

    ReadWriteWeb explains:

Each drop-box consists of a secure web connection and a form that encrypts both files and the text submitted (then destroys the originals) as well as removes identifying metadata from documents. The system also makes every effort to leave no traceable remnants from the transaction, such as identifiable session cookies on the client side or logging of any IP addresses on the server side.

Once a file is submitted, the newspaper will receive an email, alerting them to the tip. The newspaper then needs to reply that it’s interested. Then a temporary secure file transfer is established

Lord have mercy. Bristol Palin is going to speak at Washington University here in St. Louis for 20K. The topic? Get ready for it.

“The main topic of Bristol’s speech pertains to abstinence in a college setting”

The majority of the student body is incredibly ticked off, and with good reason.

I hope the student body will boycott this ridiculous endeavor. Although, watching the train wreck of Bristol attempting to string together enough words and sentences to fill a 20 minute speech should be entertaining…………..

Now THAT’s a true WTF moment. I am an alumnus (though too many years ago to count). I would think she could draw a huge crowd who would then laugh her off the stage. Remember, it was good old Wash U that had the pleasure of hosting her debate with our wonderful Veep Joe B!

    • jimzmum-first off good luck with your mother.I hope stuff works out for you. Secondly,I think Palin clan attended education-free abstinence only schools. That doesn’t sound right. Thanks for the link and enjoy some sunshine where ever you are.

jimzmum, you’re in my thoughts from time to time as I am taking care of my mother, too. Take care of yourself (something I have a hard time remembering to do) {{{{hugs}}}}.

    • LibertyLover says:

“Bristol is now an official speaker for abstinence.” Elman said. “Basically her viewpoint is she didn’t take part in abstinence. She was a victim of teen pregnancy. Realizing the hardships of that, she wished it had been talked about more.”

What? She was a VICTIM of teen pregnancy? She was a willing participant.

Only in America can the unwed single mom who is only known because her mother was a failed VP candidate for President without a high school degree (or did she get her GED?) command 15K to 30K to speak about having sex before marriage and getting pregnant because of inconsistent use of birth control (Who would have thought pregnancy would have been a possibility?)

I’m in awe of another example of celebrity for no reason at all. Paris Hilton/Nicole Ritchie syndrome.

      • vyccan says:

Actually this part of your quote is even more ironic:

“Realizing the hardships of that, she wished it had been talked about more'”

She has encountered HARDSHIP as a result of her pregnancy and the birth of her ‘miracle/beautiful’ child? The lamestream media has been lying again about the influx of opportunities and dollars that has come her way!

      • ValleyIndependent says:

I am also having a difficult time seeing this willing participant as a “victim” and so far, it does not appear she has suffered any of the “hardships” the usual unwed teen mother experiences.

Perhaps the greatest irony, though, is that an institution of higher learning is paying for this tripe.

    • g says:

I’m sure the college students will want to hear the valuable lesson that only a high school drop out unwed mother can provide.

    • tinydancer says:

How can she possibly speak on any subject that deals with college?

  15. GA Peach says:

    Very compelling.

    Who is the artist?

  16. GoI3ig says:

It is an unusual piece. Dogs make a great subject matter.
