Open Thread – Unaware

This image is from an old friend and brilliant photographer, Dave Nitsche.  He did a great job of capturing the moment we’re all in, in one way or another. You can have fun checking out the rest of his work HERE.

Just saw on another blog that Sarah Palin and her family members are applying to make their individual names ‘trademarks’. This would really be interesting!!

What happens to books that are written about her – McGinnis and Dunne (examples) – would they infringe on her name trademark (if the trademarks are approved/obtained?) and allow her to sue the authors? I know very little about this subject, so am interested to see/hear what others think or actually know and have experience w/”trademarks”.

      Bwahahaha!

Warner Brothers went after the Marx Brothers years and years ago for that very same thing.

      Obviously, WB didn’t succeed.

By their own admission, most of their children are named after places and things that are already named/trademarked. I truly doubt that the map making companies to pay them to use…words.

Unless she wants to trademark one or more of the less “kind”/more ACCURATE nicknames she’s acquired. “Special Needs Barbie” comes to mind.

Sarah Jones @ Politicususa reporting the Alaska Death Panel under Sarah Palins governorship.

snip] Palin’s “Death Panels” lie took place just weeks after she had been notified of the federally mandated shut-down in her own state, along with the lawsuits filed against her administration. She quit the office she swore to serve within weeks of this notice.

Thanks for the ling. Now it’s up to us to see that this gets circulation. Like you, I’ve found the best way (if news agencies and other well-known blogs do not publish it) is to comment on articles that focus on the health care bill (or death panels in particular) and include the link. If enough of us do exactly what you’ve just done, more and more people will be made aware of the follies of she-who-can-be-blogged-about-but-not-named-at-least-in-Feb.

In my quest to deliver news about how others view the US, I couldn’t resist posting this:

I must admit my failure with the Feb. moratorium.

Photo or enhanced (which I never do with mine), he does some lovely work!

  5. Ivan says:

sure it is nice digital art , but it is NOT a Photograph. while he does have some fantastic photos, some are very much digitally enhanced. i am a purist , a photo ceases to be a photo at some point and becomes a digital painting. a photo is moment in time captured with a camera, if you change it and manipulate it is no longer a documentation of that moment.

    my two cents.

    • Pinwheel says:

I suspect that you may be nuts !!!

    • Dave Nitsche says:

Thanks for the nod Jeannie… Just to clear up a point or two… all my images are photography with minimal editing done, if none. About 30% are shot with film, scanned and some color correcting done. It’s all done with light, tons of hours and maybe some fishing line. So Ivan if you are a purist you should be OK with my stuff. 😀

Yes AKM the photo makes me reflect on what has been the #uno topic for national news- Egypt.

The smiley face in the middle, made me smile, because it is nice to see images coming from the Middle East that aren’t all anti-American, flag burning and such. Especially after our previous POTUS and his administration and how they just made it feel like “WWJD with a gun in his hand to promote democracy.” Since it is National Prayer Day- I’m praying for all of our leaders to see the good in all citizens of the world. Amen to one and all!

  9. Zyxomma says:

Happy Year of the Rabbit, Mudpuppies and Hushpuppies. It’s sunny in NYC today (though not for much longer). I’m catching up on my science reading, and if I find anything interesting, will post it in the Forum. Health and peace in this new year.

Celebrate by eating uncut noodles (known as longevity noodles), stuffed cakes, or other treats. Burn incense or visit an altar. Rabbits are creative, talented, and ambitious. In one of the more perverse twists on Lunar New Year that I’ve ever read about (NY Daily News this past Sunday), they’re also appearing on Chinese menus in various locales in the city.

What are they going to eat in the years of the Dragon (justafarmer suggested Komodos)? Or the year of the Rat? I’ll stick to dumplings, noodles, and filled cakes, thank you very much!

Why does this description remind me of the average ‘bagger?

    http://delong.typepad.com/sdj/2011/02/the-how-to-of-fascism-a-guide-for-aspiring-dictators.html

This is my advice to any aspiring dictator; early on in your career, identify and inventory all the self-pitying, bullying shitheads your country has to offer. Anyone with a grievance, a beer belly and enough strength to swing a pickaxe handle will do. You don’t need to bother with military training or discipline because they’re hopefully never going to be used as a proper military force – just concentrate on nurturing their sense that they, despite appearances, are the backbone of the country, and allowing them to understand that although rules are rules, there are some people who just need a slap. The bigger and burlier the better, but when the time comes they’ll be fighting in groups against people weaker than themselves, often under cover of darkness, so numbers are more important than anything else. The extractive industries are indeed often a good source, as are demobbed veterans (Zimbabwe) or the laity of an established religion.

Oh, wait – our ‘baggers ride around on scooters. Nevermind.

The Iowa teen with two Mom’s speech was beyond great! I hope he will be somone we hear about in the future. If you didn’t hear it, be sure and check it out. As we listen to Repubs redefining rape (for God’s Sake) he was a moment of light.

  15. A fan from CA says:

Simon Johnson nails it on “to big to fail” banks.

    http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/02/03/the-ruinous-fiscal-impact-of-big-banks/

Another of the reasons why we need to give Obama a Congress that is functional in 2012.

    • Mo says:

Kinda liked Krugman’s take on the situation:

      From the FT:
“Governments around the world must stop banker-bashing and create the right environment for lenders to support economic growth, some of the world’s most powerful bankers will tell finance ministers on Saturday.”

So “Ma! He’s looking at me funny!” is now at the core of the financial sector’s complaints. And the world’s top bankers feel that after bringing on a gigantic crisis that has left millions unemployed, being bailed out, and receiving huge paychecks all the while, they now have the right to demand that people stop saying critical things about them.

Oh, and substantively, they want interest rates to rise despite the persistence of high unemployment.

      • Irishgirl says:

Somehow, I don’t think that message would go down too well in Ireland. We have been royally screwed by the banks and the bailouts.

    • bubbles says:

      AMEN to that!!

Only in Alaska: new snowfall, warm, so it is a bit wet; got in to work, followed a young worker in a skirt to my floor, got to the cube farm, more light, then saw she is wearing the “extra-tufs” insulated rubber boots that we all know and love. Quite fashionable, they matched her skirt.

  17. TrueBlueGirl says:

Good morning, pups! We are iced in for an unprecedented third day here in the too-red suburbs of Dallas, and looking at a fourth day of school closings tomorrow. My high school best friend, with whom I re-connected last year after 35 years, lives in Oregon and was wondering why in the world I found the 100 degree summer temperatures acceptable – I explained that it meant we didn’t have to suffer through icy messy cold in winter… hah! I stand in awe of those of you who live in REAL winter conditions. It must be all about the gear!

    • leenie17 says:

Here in western NY we managed to escape the worst of yesterday’s storm when the snow turned to sleet for part of the morning. Instead of the predicted 16-18 inches, we only had about 8. Today it’s a brisk 23 degrees with a wind chill of 11.

However, the sun (that we haven’t seen in weeks) is shining like crazy and the piles of sleet-covered snow are sparkling to beat the band. The air is crisp and the sky is blue. Yes, it’s a tad chilly, but it’s a beee-yoo-tee-ful day in my neighborhood!

(And I’d take weeks of snow and temps in the 20s over 2 days of 100+ heat, so I guess it’s a good thing I live in the frozen north and not in your neck of the woods!)

      • CorningNY says:

leenie–me too! I’d rather bundle up and get warm than try to stay cool. I hate being hot–it makes me grumpy!

It reminds me of New Years Eve. A friend texted me thinking that I was in Ireland, wished me a Happy New Year, and told me that her son was the first to celebrate the new year in her family as he was in Australia. Imagine her surprise when I texted her back from Sydney. 🙂

    • You don’t suppose squirrels and nutters are related on the evolutionary scale? Maybe they have a common ancestor not too far back in revised history. It is patently obvious both are attracted to nuts and irritate me to no known end. Yup,I’m positive they share more than a few chromosomes. Kinda sad, really, because every now and then I enjoy the antics of squirrels. As Kelly Bundy so eloquently said once,”to be forewarned is to have four arms.”

  22. bubbles says:

    from the Huffington Post:

House Republicans announced Thursday that they are taking a step back from a particularly controversial passage of a piece of anti-abortion legislation that many had criticized as a dangerous redefinition of the acts that constituted “rape.”

i got phone call last night from a Mudpup who told me to check my emails. he said he had found a rap song and the creature featured reminded him of me. i laughed because my daughter and i both share ‘Sea Otter’ as our Native American totems. i also laughed because i adore otters and because when you move the mouse in time with the music….well you can see for yourself. enjoy. it is a joyful tune.

Speaking of photos…Huffpo has a great one up that gives a realistic look at Michelle Bachmann. You’ll have to go to the main page and scroll down for it because when you click the link a different photo is posted for the story.

  25. merrycricket says:

Interesting photo. I’ll have to go check out the rest. Cold and sunny here today. The fat bastard squirrel has managed to break two of the strings that hold one of the bird feeders and now there is bird seed all over the snow. I put walnuts out for him in exchange for his leaving the bird feeders alone. All bets are off now. :p

    • Irishgirl says:

      Run squirrel run! 🙂

    • bubbles says:

      this means war!!!!! danged squirrel.

    • leenie17 says:

I have one of those metal feeders with the spring-loaded perch that the squirrels have not been able to penetrate for 10 years. They often sit on the roof, trying to figure out how to get to the seed below, but invariably slide right off as they peer down the front. They’ve managed to chew and destroy just about every other kid of feeder I’ve tried and even chewed a hole right through the lid of my heavy duty Waste Management garbage container last week so they’re quite skilled at infiltration.

I have some chipmunks who were able to leap from an adjacent shrub to the perch (until I moved the feeder forward and ruined their trajectory) but the squirrels have NEVER been able to breach the feeder. I do, however, find it very entertaining and extremely satisfying to watch them fail time after time, their little legs churning as they fly through space and down to the ground!

Does that make me evil??? 😉

      • gran567 says:

If you want to really have fun, grease the pole with vaseline and watch them get part way up then slide down on their little fannies!

Hope everyone is weathering this winter storm safe and warm…( yes, I’m being serious for the moment… 🙂 )
Both of my daughters were asking questions about Egypt last nite !! OMG, there IS hope for the next generation beyond the latest cell phone options and what’s happening on Jersey Shores!!! chortle, tried to sneak in a little history about the Julius, Octavious, Cleopatra, Alexander the Great and got howled down… “DDAAAADDDD”!!!… but it was worth a shot planting a few seeds !

    • TX SMR says:

Check out these books about history:

      http://thepioneerwoman.com/homeschooling/2008/10/the-story-of-the-world/

I bought these for my 5-yr-old. They’re really interesting, and if you can check them out at the library it’s better, in case you hate them!

We have one of the many books (several volumes) and its accompanying workbook that has really cool projects that go along with the readings.

The one that we have starts in Egypt with a young girl & her family. It’s definitely written to appeal to children as much as it’s possible to make history appealing to children!

For a really good laugh check out the homeschooling book sites that have books about God + dinosaurs. Unbelievable. Churning out some messed up minds.

      • benlomond2 says:

thanks.! chuckle.. the “kids” are 19 and 27 tho’ … although they might actuall appreciate the coloring book version !!! ( yes, they WILL do coloring books, even at current ages !! )

    • Stealer’s Wheel was a definite thought.Seems to be more to it than that. Get well sooner and quicker. Seeing what certain pols are doing makes me queasy everyday. Goes with the territory.About five degrees below and sunny here in Cong. Steve King Hell.

    • Bretta says:

      Hope you begin to feel better, very soon. The bug got me, too; it’s taken about three weeks to feel better but my throat is still sore. {{{Hugs}}}

    • leenie17 says:

Sorry to hear you’re still under the weather. I’m finally feeling good (knock wood) but that may not last for long. As much as we try to emphasize good hygiene at school, my little ones just don’t get it! Many times they do TRY to cover their mouths, but the coughs and sneezes take them by surprise and sneak out before they can get their germy little faces to their elbows.

I spent some time today working one-on-one with one of my little 3rd grade cherubs. She spent the entire half hour coughing on me and wiping her nose with her hand…and then trying to touch me. Eeewww! And people wonder why I’m sick all the time!

We were working on a story that mentioned shaking hands and when I tried to show her the sign (she’s deaf), she tried to actually shake my hand. It had JUST been in intimate contact with her wet and runny nose. She thought it was terribly amusing when I pulled back my hand and made a scrunchy face at her. Unfortunately, when I was distracted by another kid in the class, she grabbed my hand and shook. After I left her class I headed straight for the ladies room and scrubbed my hands. Kid germs are the WORST!!!

  32. Polarbear says:

Great photograph. The moment we are in is complex and difficult to understand. It is difficult to understand how to respond effectively even with the guidance of faith and values. It is difficult to understand how to effectively protect my family from the risks around us. It keeps some of us up nights, eh? The one saving grace is understanding that we are all in the same situation and stronger for our conversation.
