Open Thread: Assembly Changes

I attended the first meeting of the new 2011 Anchorage Assembly, which also was (sadly) a farewell and passing of the baton by Eastside’s Mike Guttierez to the election winner, Adam Trombley. The main purpose of the meeting was to certify the most recent Municipal Election, to swear in the returning Assembly and the one new member, and to establish the Assembly leadership. I wrote a post about the insane faux-controversy over Chairman Dick Traini’s speech at the April 4th We Are One Rally. Unfortunately, the results didn’t go our way.

However, the overall tone of the meeting was relatively lighthearted, as friends and family watched the Assembly members get sworn in for their new terms. Mike Guttierez proved himself once again to be a class act as he said personal goodbyes to each of the members on the dias. As you can also see, Mike and Paul Honeman had a little fun in front of my camera. My personal favorite was the “Brian the Moose” impression on the top.

I also liked Mike’s “fond farewell!”

If you want to see the entire meeting (which was very short) HERE IS THE LINK.

We’re going to miss you, Mike.

    Help!

Okay, I’m getting kinda frustrated and I need some help with a technical issue. Maybe there’s a mudpup out there who’s having the same problem OR who can tell me how to fix it (fingers crossed).

I’ve been using Chrome as my browser instead of IE and MOST of the time I have no problem posting comments. Sometimes, however, for no apparent reason, it will go to a plain white page after I click submit. If I use the back arrow key, the comment is still there in all its glory, but it just won’t go through.

It doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the comment itself because I can open up IE, submit the exact same comment 10 seconds later and it will go right through.

Sometimes I’ll be able to post several comments from Chrome but all of sudden it will do the white page thing again.

Anyone have the same issue or, even better, know how I can make it stop???

(By the way, I’m sending this from IE because it’s doing the white page thing again tonight…arrgghhh!)

sorry. Jack David. Davis . whatevah.

  3. bubbles says:

He recently caused an uproar when he suggested that Latino farmworkers should be deported and young black men from the inner city should be bussed to the farms to take their place. (Yeah, no legal concerns there, ya think?)

i say to Jack Davis “go for it.”
i would pay good money to witness that. so go right on ahead Jack my man. let’s see you put chains on them there Black men in that there inner city place.
think Texas is burning? i double dare you Jack.

Well, he DID suggest paying them “a decent wage” for it.

Like that makes it all okay.

At least the Republican powers that be recognized that it was a stupid and racist thing to say.

“I was thunderstruck,” said Amherst GOP Chairman Marshall Wood. “Maybe in 1860 that might have been seen by some as an appropriate comment, but not now.”

And THIS is who the young man wanted me to vote for??? In his dreams!

  4. leenie17 says:

Here in NY29 we’re having a special election for US Representative, thanks to the Chris Lee nekkid-photo-crossdressing-hooker scandal and resulting resignation. The Republican and Democratic candidates are both women from the western end of the district (near Buffalo).

    And then there’s Jack Davis.

Davis is a bit of a nutter who’s switched from Republican to Democrat and back to Republican, and is now running on the Tea Party line. He recently caused an uproar when he suggested that Latino farmworkers should be deported and young black men from the inner city should be bussed to the farms to take their place. (Yeah, no legal concerns there, ya think?)

Yesterday evening, the doorbell rang and a nicely dressed young many identified himself as being with the Jack David for Congress campaign. He asked me if I had decided who to vote for. He was a little startled and didn’t quite know how to respond when I said, very clearly and very definitively, “NOT Jack Davis!” He hesitated and then, looking rather sheepish, said, “Well, uh, okay, uh, thank you.” and walked away.

I kinda felt sorry for him. Almost. 😉

..and with his mighty pen the President strikes and gives Citizens United a kick where the sun don’t shine:

    • YESSSSSSS…I just posted about that on Facebook!

Isn’t it nice to have a smart President? A President who’s also a constitutional lawyer comes in very handy sometimes! 😉

Now, if we can only get one more right-wing justice to retire, we can swing the court a little more to the left and undo the mess that Citizens United created.

What we need is a constitutional amendment that defines a corporation.

Why wait, impeach to date. I said that cuz it rhymes. Justice Dept. to look into high gas prices-I only hope they don’t decide they aren’t high enough. Gas in my home town of Sutherland.Ia. was 3.84 and 200 miles down the road it was 3.59/gal. Something doesn’t pass the smell test.

        • leenie17 says:

I’d be happy with either one. I just filled up and it was $3.91.

The station down the road a bit was $4.09 but they’re always 10 -20 cents more than anyone else. How they stay in business when there are two cheaper stations a mile down the street is a mystery.

Rochester is always higher than either Buffalo or Syracuse, despite the fact that we’re smack dab in between them. Supposedly, years ago, when Kodak was booming and Rochester had a higher standard of living than either of the two other cities, gas stations started charging higher prices in Rochester JUST because people could and would pay more. Kodak’s boom went bust a long time ago but the prices are still higher here than most of the surrounding cities. Seems to me like things are a bit ‘smelly’ here too!

Here in the Netherlands we pay about $8.00 a gallon for lead free benzine. About 60% of that are hidden taxes. We also pay road tax based on the weight of your car and what type of fuel you use.

Brilliant move. This should have been done twenty years ago.

I am very sad to lose Mike Guttierez as our rep here on the eastside. he had stopped by our house while campaigning. i assured him he had 2 votes here, that he didn’t have to spend time discussing concerns, bc I had been paying attention thus far, & wished him well with my neighbors~
    eeeeeesh! I miss him already:(

  10. fishingmamma says:

They have a very effective machine. They get out the vote by calling the churches. They are organized and motivated. They believe they are in a religious war. We are engaged in politics, and we are attempting to discuss issues. We are looking at a small part of the picture they are seeing.

As Will rogers said, “I am not part of an organized political party, I am a democrat”

We will win when we get our s**t together, not before that.

    • What fishingmamma said.

Please remember that not all Christians think this way. I personally think that Jesus would be a left-leaning Independent. Just consider who he reached out to…he ministered to the least, the last and the lost. He told the rich man to sell everything he had and give to the poor.

Isn’t it time for the good guys to win – just a few? I’m just so sick of seeing these RWNJ’s getting their way most, if not all, of the time. Debbie Ossiander? Chair? Really?

This is a giant step backwards.
