Open Thread – Eerie

OK, this irreverent cringe-inducing but funny satirical clip is TEN years old. All I’m saying is… imagine different hair, and a different annoying accent… and a bus. Just saying.

Bachmann was coached by Ed Rollins. He’s pretty savy when it comes to campaigning, and Conservative Foot-in-Mouth disease.

Compared with the rest of the field she came across as somewhat sane. Left to her own, she would come across as the Conductor on the Dis-Orient Express.

First and foremost she’s a radical Evangilist who believes that she is one of the flock chosen by God to see the world as it really is. The rest of us live in a delusion, and need to be led to the light.

Now we have Slick Rick Perry slithering in, alluding to himself as a “Prophet”, and referring to his self aggrandizing as “Biblical”.

The American Taliban is alive and well…

Was just working on this post when all of a sudden, poof! It disappeared. So you’ll probably see two. Sorry if that happens.

Speaking of Rep. Bachmann, did anyone watch the GOP debate tonight from New Hampshire?

I’m not Rethuglican, but came home after a 10+ hour work day and just wanted to see what news I missed. And there was the debate.

Kept asking myself, if I were voting GOP, which one would I choose? Most of them touted the party line. The one renegade in the group, I think, is Ron Paul. He actually has some good ideas. I just wish I could see some compassion in him for the people who are hurting. I can’t look into the future with him as President and figure out what he’d do with all the folks out on the streets without jobs, health care, or homes. He thinks the free market and states can take care of that.

And I actually do think there are a lot of spending cuts that could be made without damaging the economy, mostly in top-heavy government and military [wars??]. Most of my working life was spent working for state & federal government, and mostly in budgets/accounting. I have seen first-hand how government spending can get out of control. I also have seen how cuts can easily be made when they are mandated and individual units have control over their financial destiny. It works. One of my former state units (not in Alaska) received a Malcolm Baldridge Award for Quality, based on exactly that … setting mission priorities and molding/monitoring your budget accordingly. That was in a time of budget cuts.

    Anyway, back to the debate.

I pretty much decided that if I were a Rethuglican, I knew who I would NOT vote for. And I think those who emerge will NOT be the ones the pundits expect.

Romney flip-flopped a lot and a few times didn’t even answer the question.

Santorum appeared, at least to me, to be a pretty boy with a huge opinion of himself.

Bachmann actually sounded more intelligent than I’ve ever seen! Certainly much more so than Palin. Maybe that means $P will go away? (Well, we can hope … ) Not sayin’ I want Bachmann, just that she didn’t sound too crazy tonight. I think she actually might have studied, unlike someone else we’ve come to know …

    Preview of things to come??

Bachmann just announced her run for the Presidency.

Enough to make a moose take up eating popcorn.

From Andrew Sullivan …who is NO “Crazed Trig Truther”

    The Day Trig Was Born

“Her staff had no idea, it seems, that she was giving birth at all. That’s how secretive she was about this whole thing, even during this remarkable labor. And am I alone in detecting a tiny bit of skepticism creeping into the Washington Post’s report here? I mean, even a MSM editor cannot keep a straight face all the time.

It seems to me we have two options. It’s possible that Palin simply made up her drama of labor, or exaggerated it for effect, when in fact it was a routine, if rare, pregnancy, and she had mild warnings that the birth may be premature, and she gussied that up into a tall tale of her pioneer spirit, guided by her doctor, who refused to take the NYT’s calls as soon as Palin hit the big time.

I think that’s the likeliest explanation, given the sheer world-historical weirdness of the alternative.

But it’s also possible that she never had that baby at all. I mean, if you read the emails and independent reports above and were asked if this woman were in labor with a special needs child, and that her water had already broken, would you believe it?

Just put all the facts in front of you and ask yourself that question.

    • carol says:

Speaking of this, did the Alaska state delegation ever get to Norway to see what Norway is doing right about oil and gas?

  6. marcuswelbymd says:

Yes, this video fits Sarah Palin to a “T” – spot on about everything.

  7. Mo says:

    About that Oil…

    http://www.politicususa.com/en/what-big-oil-really-does-with-our-money

“If you’re like me, you’re probably not too happy. You’re perhaps driving less, combining errands when possible. The idea of taking my car out on the highway just to drive seems alien now. And while we’re hurting, Big Oil is laughing.”

  8. AuntieRuth says:

Can the Alaskan pups please explain something? Is the use of “flippin'” an “Alaska Thing” or is it a purely Palin thing? Down here we might say “freaking” or “frikkin” or some variant, but not flippin. And whatever it is, it is a semi-polite substitute for “the f-bomb” which, in my opinion, makes it inappropriate for use in professional emails or on family-friendly reality shows.

    What is your take?

    • scout says:

You are correct, Auntie Ruth, it is a variant of the f-bomb. Sarah cusses a lot for an Evangelical, doesn’t she? And in her case, this explains it: “Cursing is a weak mind trying to express itself strongly.” ~ anon.

    • John says:

It is not an Alaska thing. I’m sure there are a few others who use it besides SP, but I’ve never heard them.

      • John says:

And of course it is unprofessional.

        • AuntieRuth says:

Does she not know what it is a substitute for? I am not a prude, and I can and will cuss with the best of the cussers, but I am careful about my audience. I also grew up in much more humble circumstances than Scarah, and feel blessed to have achieved an “elite” Ivy League education on scholarship. But I don’t talk like the ignorant hillbilly that I was at risk of being. I can barely express my disgust at her ignorant arrogance.

    • AKMuckraker says:

I have never heard “flippin” until Palin. Could be just me.

    • Buffalogal says:

I can’t remember where I first heard, “flippin”, but somewhere along the line I did adopt it as part of my jargon. I rarely use the hard core cursin’ but I find “flippin” and “freakin” useful alternatives for the times when some sort of “effin” is struggling for the surface.

      • AuntieRuth says:

        Dear Buff-

Would you use it in an email on your job? Or on a family-friendly teevee show?

    • leenie17 says:

I have a close friend who uses it quite often. She was born and raised in western NY although she lived for a few years near NYC. She only uses it with people she knows well and would never consider putting it in a work-related email.

Completely inappropriate for a governor to use it in any context, verbal or written, outside of family and close friends. But then again, we all know how unprofessional Quitty Queen is!

And, yes, she does curse and use inappropriate language a LOT! Guess that’s where her lovely daughters picked up their extensive vocabulary of offensive words.

    • OMG says:

A woman who had worked for me (from S. Africa) used flippin’ all the time as a polite form of the other ‘f’ word.

  9. jimzmum says:

I’d forgotten about that. It is very eerie!

Brian went to Shakespeare in the Park last night and had a good time. I was taking his picture, and somebody said, “Mudflats?” How cool is that? Don’t know who she was, but she reads here. Never posts, but I told her to jump in.

    • leenie17 says:

      Mudpups are EVERYWHERE!!! 🙂

Where was that Shakespeare in the Park? The one I’ve gone to is in Central Park in NY but I imagine it’s done in other places as well…

      • jimzmum says:

“Ours” is in St. Louis, MO. In Forest Park. It is next to Art Hill.

      • Buffalogal says:

leenie – there’s a fabulous production that’s done every summer here in Buffalo. They do 2 plays every season. It’s done in Delaware Park, another of Fredick Olmsted’s parks. Not as big as Central, but every bit as gorgeous. We should go !

        • leenie17 says:

That’s really weird – I actually drove right past Delaware Park yesterday morning. Unfortunately, I was on the way to a memorial service at Forest Lawn next door.

I didn’t see too much of the park because I was trying to find the entrance to the cemetery while simultaneously listening to instructions from the two other people in the car, following the directions of the police officers directing traffic, navigating around roadblocks and avoiding a whole bunch of runners in some sort of road race. I was also stressed out in anticipation of where I was going so I didn’t pay much attention to the park itself. However, I’ll take your word that it is a beautiful place and the perfect location for some Shakespeare!

    • LA Brian says:

Long Beach hosts “Bard in the Yard” each summer, which is still a fun way to see the master’s work live.

      • mike from iowa says:

That is flippin’ cool. In Iowa we have a thing for Barrymore’s for some reason. A learned person once commented on ring-neck pheasants as being backwoods Barrymores. I didn’t get it then and I still don’t. Flippin’ lets a person get away with near profanity without the actual blemish on their record. Am looking for an Iowa tie to Brian.

Would it not be special if Sarah did a song an dance tune for us here in her? home state. Sorry what was i thinking she’s been doing that for years.
