Beanied Congressman Don Young Addresses Interior Secretery Salazar

Dear Rest of Nation,

You may have many things – cheap airline tickets, world-class museums and symphonies, outlet stores, the vineyards and orchards, good public transportation, five star restaurants, and fabulous architecture. But we have things too, like the best salmon in the world, soaring mountain vistas, drive up coffee stands, downtown moose… And, I feel confident in saying that you do not have a Congressman who wears a propeller beanie while questioning the Secretary of the Interior.

And we do.

Here is Don Young, “Congressman for All Alaska,”Β  at a Natural Resources hearing in our nation’s capital. He addresses Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar regarding how the energy plan affects Alaska, and about opening up the coastal plain of Alaska (i.e. the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) for oil exploration, a position with which most Alaskans agree.

If the meaning of the propeller hat is lost on you, here is the Congressman’s explanation:

“My hat that I’m wearing, my support of the Obama energy program, it’s called a propeller because there is no energy program.”

I trust that the symbolism is now crystal clear.Β

Don Young – the cross we must bear because we keep voting for him. Carry on.

Whoever runs against Don Young in the next election will have a powerful photo to compare themselves to.

  2. Polarbear says:

Put a windmill in front of Don, and at least recover something.

  3. bubbles says:

i don’t know Mudpups. there is a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ goin’ on with that beanie. it sort of fits somehow. reminds me of the pimp hat old fart Herman aka Hold the Sausage Cain wears.

    • Mag the Mick says:

Out here in the West, we have a saying: “He’s all hat, no cowboy.” In the urban areas of the East, do you say “He’s all hat, no pimp”? Of course, Herman is both.

  4. Carol says:

I’ll bet the rest of you mudpups get emails declaring that congress is broken and we need to throw all the bums out, start new, term limits, yada, yada, yada, blah, blah, blah. Note who these come from. When I get them, I’ll consider who sent them and usually send them back, asking, “are you going to vote for Young next election?” I don’t get replies to that.

  5. GreatGranny2C says:

Oh my – how I have missed The Mudflats! After several weeks in the hospital, surgery, and recuperation, I’m finally getting out of bed and back to the computer! I had almost forgotten what wonderful mudpups are part of this forum, and the humorous comments are exactly what the doctor ordered! Now I’ll catch up on reading more and having some good chuckles! Thanks and love to all for being each and everyone of you special folks!

    • tigerwine says:

Us Mudpups welcome you back with open arms, Great Granny! Too bad it had to be this post that is so shameful and crazy! May your return bring us better behaviour from our elected officials!

    • CO almost native says:

Glad you’re here! ((GreatGranny2C)) Get better soon!

    • bubbles says:

Love and kisses speeding their way to you Sweetums.

    • FAWNSKIN MUDPUPPY says:

      oh,it’s you, it’s you.

how is the great state of kentucky?

    • leenie17 says:

Remember…laughter IS the best medicine!!! Glad to have you back! πŸ™‚

    • Zyxomma says:

Welcome home to the ‘flats, GG2C! We missed you, and love you, and we’re delighted to have you back among us.

  6. CO almost native says:

I should’ve known better than to drink hot liquid and read these comments… the beanie was a dead give away πŸ˜‰

  7. Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

He’s just trying to spin things, as usual. Plus a gimmick to prop up his self esteem.

  8. GoI3ig says:

Maybe he won the hat in a box of Quisp cereral?

  9. Yeah, I’m with LA Brian – I really don’t get the point of that hat – unless he just wants everyone to know that he’s stuck in the 30s or 40s. I know my mother joked about freshmen having to wear them and I was afraid that I would have to as well. But by the 60s we were a little more progressive than that.

He has to be one of the biggest idiots holding office – not the only one, mind you. But he is the only one I’ve seen wearing a beanie hat and bragging about it.

  10. Moose Pucky says:

So who’s going to run against old propeller hat?

  11. LA Brian says:

Me: Can I ask a dumb question?

    (Usually) Someone Else: Absolutely.

Even after reading his quote twice I’m still confused as to the symbolism of the propeller beanie. I should probably just go back to streaming ‘Ass’ on Netflix.

    • Zyxomma says:

You mean ‘Ass,’ which won every major Academy Award in the film, ‘Idiocracy?’

  12. BeeJay says:

Dear Jesus/Allah/Buddha/Cthulhu/Flying Spaghetti Monster, please take him now! Failing that, at least make sure he’s not re-elected next year.

There’s way, way too much batsh*ttery and a$$hattery going on now.

    Nuff said.

  13. Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

    He’s a whiny weenie with a beanie.

  14. mike from iowa says:

Might I suggest he install a jet engine on his hat,hit the afterburner and suck what passes for a brain through the vast wasteland between his ears and out his ……..nevermind, he looks like he’s all ass to me.

    • Lee323 says:

Afterburners and asses sound like a tricky combo, Mike (especially in the case of Don “old fart” Young).

It reminds of me of true story told to me about 30 years ago by a fireman:

A man had painters working in his house. Unbeknownst to this home owner, the painters disposed of their paint thinner and other volatile substances in his toilet. The man went into the bathroom and smoked a cigarette while doing his business on the toilet. When he was finished, he reached between his legs to drop the burning cigarette butt into the toilet bowl. Kaboom. When the firemen were carrying this hapless patient down the stairs on a gurney—he was facedown with his burned arse in the air—they started laughing so hard that they dropped the gurney, and the man broke his leg.

Yeah. Afterburners and asses. Tricky combo.

      • LOL- is that really true or is it one of those wonderful urban legends that we all hope is true? πŸ™‚

        • Lee323 says:

The fireman was so adept in telling the story that I thought it was true. At any rate, it was uproariously funny at the time–in a guilty sort of way, since some poor schmuck was supposedly blowing up his bum and breaking his leg.

I have heard the story since then with various modifications and embellishments, so I suspect that it’s an urban legend. At the heart of most urban legends is a kernel of truth, which makes them so persistent. (In this case, the combination of fire and volatile substances do indeed represent a hazard to an arse unfortunate enough to be located in close proximity. πŸ˜‰ )

      • bubbles says:

        tricky combo indeed. LMAO!

    • Mag the Mick says:

Mikey, along with Zyx, I love you too.

Hell, I love pretty much everyone in this community. Thanks for helping me feel not so alone in my outrage.

  15. Zyxomma says:

What’s even more amazing and disturbing is that Yon Dung wasn’t even in the room to hear the testimony he was refuting. Rep. Doc Hastings should not have recognized Young for that reason. OK, so he did. However, Hastings should not have been declaring Brinkley wrong for “interrupting” when he was suffering a baseless attack by a propellor beanie who didn’t even know his name.

    • Zyxomma says:

That was supposed to be a response to #8, Lee 323, not its own comment.

    • Alaska Pi says:

He was not refuting any testimony. He was acting like a spoiled brat and refusing to hear it.
Rep Hastings deserves some kind of censure for allowing Rep Young to harass the historian and for acting like it was acceptable behavior when the historian wouldn’t take it lying down.
And Alaska, Rep Young deserves a hearty boot in the rear from all of us.
We don’t need that kind of GOVERNMENTAL BULLYING anywhere in America
I hope all those don’t-tread-on-me Alaskans who always vote for this buffoon are paying attention . Mr keep-the federal-gubbamint -outta-my-business sure acts like the kind of government thug he rails about, eh?

    • Hastings, as far as I can tell, is just like Young – though I’ve never seen him running around Washington state with a beanie hat.

I’m glad he isn’t my congressman, though if he were, at least I’d have a chance to vote him out of office.

  16. Lee323 says:

Here’s another related example of the embarrassing depths to which this a$$hole has fallen:

“A heated exchange between two Congressmen and a historian they didn’t want to hear from shows what happens to democracy when knowledge is no longer the arbiter of what is true, but is simply another “way of knowing.”

This shameful display happened when Republican Congressman Don Young from the state of Alaska shouted down a noted historian invited to testify before the House Natural Resources Committee Hearing: Arctic Refuge: Jobs, Energy and Deficit Reduction. The hearing was the Democratic response panel to a Republican effort to push drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, a national park that belongs to the citizens, arguing that it would create jobs and reduce the deficit.”

The transcript of the exchange is included in the following link. It will make your blood boil (if you have an IQ above 80):

The ignorant bullies have always been around, but now they flaunt their ignorance and disrespect openly with expectations of applause and smirks from their equally ignorant cohorts.

    • Alaska Pi says:

He hasn’t fallen, he’s pretty much always been that way.Treats constituents who did not vote for him about the same.Nothing new.

He’s full of horsepunky on 1002 Area . It’s the calving ground of the Porcupine caribou.Getting pretty tired of politicos waving their chubby hands round and saying ANWR is pretty much barren.

Insulting and attempting to intimidate someone called to testify is more of the same old, same old nasty horsepunky of his.

Glad to see these awful behaviors getting out and talked about.
Not so sure Alaskans who think it’s all about 2nd amendment and oil will “get it” though…

      • Moose Pucky says:

I keep thinking about Margaret and Olaus Murie and all the work they did to get this 1002 area of ANWR protected. It is an extraordinary place–the Arctic Coastal Plain. It needs our love.

    • tigerwine says:

I’m sitting here just shaking my head at the depths to which our Representatives have fallen. Don’t have any words. Thanks for the link, Lee. May all Alaskans be able to view it!

  17. CO native living in NC says:

    Um, just wow….

  18. Bob Benner says:

If a gas powered engine was connected to that propeller on his beenie copter, it would be spinning.. But the only thing that will turn that propeller is the wind (green energy) and it’s not spinning… Looks like Don Young made his point to me… sorry the point went over your heads (pun intended)… I also liked the part in the article about the cheap airline tickets…as the price of oil goes up, so goes the cost of airline tickets… By the way, I wonder how many readers here would be willing to board a solar powered airplane…

  19. akglow says:

I think it is time Mr. Young’s family gets him some treatment.

  20. WakeUpAmerica says:

I’m so sorry for you. You didn’t deserve the Tundra Turd, Captain Zero, Lisa the Meadow Muffin, AND the corrupt child with the propeller beanie.

  21. Skagway Kid says:

Young is part of the oil cabal that will squeeze every hydrocarbon off the earth before accepting alternate energy. Old timers in Alaska inside the government and out cling to the oil addiction. Obama’s rethinking the tar sands pipeline was right move but not timely. We must keep ANWR

  22. Paul says:

This guy is right on. Love the illustration with the hat. Not only is there plenty of oil in Alaska for all of us, there is also plenty on the plains of the Dakotas as well. The environmentalist would rather our country continue to buy oil from the middle east and support terrorist than to tap in our own wealth of natural resources.

  23. Zyxomma says:

From my tiny island on the other side of the continent, it’s hard to comprehend how anyone ever voted for him, and harder to comprehend how anyone still keeps voting for him. I guess it’s more polite to call him a propeller beanie than it is an @sshat?

  24. blue_in_AK says:

He’s a laugh riot, isn’t he? Whatever will we do when he’s gone?

    • WhichTruth says:

      Maybe get adult representation?

      • UgaVic says:

I second that motion. It was a motion, right? Wish we could get enough Alaskans, who are also motivated to get out and vote, to realize what is possible when it comes to good representation and get behind an ‘adult’!!

  25. leenie17 says:

    Welllll…okay, I guess.

    You all must be so….ummm…….proud?
