Palin’s Newt Testament

After 30 years, Alaska Airlines has decided to no longer include prayer cards on the tray with their in-flight meals. The small, business card sized cards contained short quotes from the Bible and a peaceful image of nature. In a memo sent to frequent fliers, the airline made the announcement on Wednesday that the cards will be discontinued come February 1. “We’ve heard from many of you who believe religion is inappropriate on an airplane, and some are offended when we hand out the cards. Religious beliefs are deeply personal and sharing them with others is an individual choice,” explained the memo.

Airline spokesperson Bobbie Egan told msnbc.com that over the years the airline has received letters and e-mails from customers for and against the card. Last fall the company decided to stop distributing the cards because, Egan said, “We believe it’s the right thing to do in order to respect the diverse religious beliefs and cultural attitudes of all our customers and employees.”

The decision was welcomed by many, but distressed Alaska’s ex-half-governor who seemed baffled by the company’s decision posted a lamentation on Facebook. “It feels so odd that some may be offended by a little card with an encouraging non-denominational verse from the Psalms…” mused the befuddled Palin on her Facebook page. Not respecting diversity?  The card was non-denominational! It covers all Christian denominations. I mean… who could possibly take that the wrong way?

In a letter she wrote to the airline, she mused

“The Alaska Airlines traditions should be looked upon as an all-American, encouraging, hopeful gesture.”

What, after all, is more all-American than the Bible?

Palin likely doesn’t realize that Alaska Airlines meals have been served only in the first class cabin for the past six years. The rest of us in coach class have had to make due with a wing, minus the prayer, since that time. It’s the godless $7 snack pack for the masses.

And speaking of Christianity, the enemies of good are not only busy encouraging “censorship” of airline propaganda,  they also seem to have it in for Newt Gingrich.

Palin, yesterday characterized the recent wave of conservative criticism levied against presidential contender New Gingrich as the lamestream establishment attempting to “crucify” the former Speaker. It is hard to avoid the Christ-like metaphor when discussing Newt.

“Look at Newt Gingrich, what’s going on with him via the establishment’s attacks. They’re trying to crucify this man and rewrite history and rewrite what it is that he has stood for all these years.”

Rewriting history, we can all agree, is unconscionable, and the tool of bloviators who cannot stand on actual history to make their points.

One of the Roman soldiers who nailed Newt to the metaphorical cross, conservative columnist Peggy Noonan, called Gingrich an “angry attack muffin.” Ouch. That one’s going to leave a mark. The blistering attack brought forth this avalanche of word salad from Palin:

“They maybe subscribe such characterizations of Newt via words like that, but they don’t subscribe those to say Mitt Romney when he or his surrogates do the same thing. That’s that typical hypocrisy stuff in the media, you know, I’ve lived with over a couple of decades in the political arena. It is hypocritical of the media to subscribe to one candidate and not another, that kind of ‘angry attack muffin’ verbiage to one and not the other.”

Oh that “typical hypocrisy stuff” that has been dogging Palin since she first ran for the Wasilla City Council, twenty years ago. I can’t wait to see how she defends President Obama against the name calling, politics of personal destruction, and the rewriting of history from the GOP.

So I’ve noticed that Alaska Worst Governor Ever hasn’t spoke too much on any specific accomplishments while holding office. Only generalities, like “in my 20 years of politics”…

Me thinks a few Alaskans got a hold of her and told her off… more than half dozen times, at least.
Frankly, she cant go anywhere up here without someone telling her off. Which is why she hardly shows her face. Only for Faux News… kinda funny it you ask me.

Newt’s ‘Big Idea’ may be right under our noses (although many mudpups had already supported it) and I’m afraid that a majority of Americans could get behind it:

    http://politico-junkie.blogspot.com/2012/01/gingrichs-secret-weapon.html

    • I’d support it if the current weird crop of republicans went with her. They could run the moon government however they want and see how that works for them. Probably not any better than it would work here. But seriously, the way they have messed up everything they have done in the last decade, I’d hate to see our moon destroyed. Besides, that would mean they would have to acknowledge that science exists – not sure some of them could do that.

  8. GoI3ig says:

Don’t be fooled fellow mudpups. The decision to discontinue the little prayer cards really had less to do with political correctness or religion than it did with the bottom line.

That little elimination will save Alaska Air group a lot of money. Every dime is multiplied by thousands each day when you factor in all the flights.

    • beth. says:

I’m pretty sure of that, too…not only the printing (and associated) costs for the cards, but the cost of time spent getting them onto the trays and the cost of –additional– time spent by the cleaning crews having to pick up stray pieces of little paper as they prep planes for the next leg. (Rumor has it that some passengers even studied the properties of aerodynamics with those cards. [ 😉 @ tallimat ]) Had it not been a bottom line issue, factoids about Alaska and/or the airline would’ve been super easy to do, would’ve been a nice ‘gift’ to the passengers, and would’ve been great pr for the company. beth.

    • StElias says:

Well, the carrier didn’t use cost as a rationale for discontinuing the practice of placing prayer slips on the 1st class meal tray (perhaps I missed something). And for good reason, they would look foolish. At the peak of the year, system wide, on an average day, assuming every first class seat is full, the most cards used would be between 7,500 and 8,000. (72,000 more if you add coach back in.)

These cards (actually “card” is a misnomer since the prayers are printed on cheap little thin slips of paper not near as thick as a business card) are included on the tray as part of the meal packet (silverware, napkin, salt/pepper etc). The meals are prepared by industrial airline catering food service concessions. The slips are given to those contractors in bulk, who prepare airline meals pursuant to client specifications.

As far as clean up. I ride ASA first class quite frequently, 16 1st class seats on the B737-800. Don’t recall much mess ever being left behind on deplaning, much less seeing prayer slips laying all over the place. Reason, the flight attendant assigned to first class usually cleans up all leftover meal items when he/she picks up the trays. They even tidy up around the seats. The additional cost is negligible.

When Alaska implemented 1st class service, in the late 1960s, there was some internal corporate argument over the proposal. Opponets lost when it was pointed out profits from the sale of booze in coach paid for all 1st class costs including the loss of two seats per row. Just think, the sinners in coach have been paying for the luxuries and praying in first (LOL).

No, I believe the airline’s logic here is correct. They have been taking too much heat for the slips. Hate to say it but this is just another symptom of the demise of traditional religious thinking. The intellectual revolution of western industrialized countries has really allowed secularism to gain traction. This view of course is contrary to mega-church growth where charismatic preachers attract large followings and third world Christian church membership growth is huge. But, when the developing world becomes as open minded, the challenge to traditional religious images in their world will also be scrutinized.

Maybe Newt asked Sarah Palin not to endorse him publicly. Her role in his administration might depend on her silence on the subject. You know how some of the people she endorsed in 2010 did not do so well. . . .

  14. Personally, I always liked the cards. I found it calming to read a psalm before flying, and then it made a very useful bookmark. I do see, however, why they have chosen to discontinue the use – it seems it’s the right thing to do in this climate of outrage on the part of some who claim to be Christians, some who claim to be Jewish or Muslim, and some who claim no religion at all. Why add to the dissension? It’s not worth it to have the card. I still always take the time to say a prayer for the flight crew and all the passengers before we take off, and I can still do that. No one else even knows that I am doing it – so they shouldn’t be offended. Why can’t Sarah just do the same – no one is stopping her from that.

However, Alaska is a private company, not a government airline – so really, if they wanted to do it, they could. I think they are just showing that they are sensitive to all those who fly and not just those who are Jewish or Christian. And that does make it the right thing at the right time to do.

  15. Desert Mudpup says:

Newt crucified? No surprise, really. He’s already performed two miracles – he saved the economy when Reagan was president and saved it again while Clinton was president – and on this planet, when you go around performing miracles you’re going to get crucified by somebody. Just ask Barry the Muslim Kenyan about that.
    ————————————
If an airline wants to hand me a card to give me some peace of mind, they could give me one w/ the aircraft’s last inspection report, the pilots’ qualifications & total experience, and last proficiency-check results. (And leave the door open ’til I’ve had time to read it.)

  16. Baker's Dozen says:

Whoa! Will have to come back and read the comments later, there’re so many. But I’m wondering about those subscriptions.

I assume that to subscribe to Romney, you have to use investment income, taxable at 15%.

To subscribe to Newt, do I have to use income incurred whilst really encouraging Congress to act in my company’s best interest but not lobbying, OR would it be income received when pillaring someone for lax morals whilst having a little extra on the side–again?

Are we supposed to call Mittens a sleazy, cheating, lying adulterer who was fined and pushed out of Congress for ethics violations?

There are plenty of criticisms to go around without insisting that you make the same kind of angry food references to each of them! (And, besides, Newt looks much more like the angry giant Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters than a muffin of any kind!)

Are her “panties in a wad” because “the establishment” is *not* attacking Mitt for things he has said, done, and stood for in the past –whereas they *are* going after Newt for what he has said, done and stood for, OR are her “panties in a wad” because no (establishment) pundent [can one “sic” verbal utterances?] has ascribed a similar food-related/imaged characteristic to Mitt — whereas one pundent [sic] *has* called Newt an “angry attack muffin”, OR … what?

This whole “typical media hypocrisy stuff” (as ‘subscribed’ by Sarah) really has me scratching my head. Can I get someone to help unconfuse me? Please? beth.

    >> I’m also not convinced but what she totally misused “subscribed” in her salad; it should have been, “ascribed”, I believe. But, as is par for the course for her, IF one plods through the definitions and looks at the 3rd definition of the v.intr. form of “subscribed,” she’s home free. “Ascribed”, on the other hand, means exactly what has happened/is happening and is what she’s (I think) railing against — no searching for a possible ‘fit’, involved. b.

The point isn’t that Palin doesn’t have a right to speak her opinion; the point is she is clueless about a central tenant of our country’s democracy. Her statement is very blatant: Anyone who isn’t a Christian, is not an American.

The puritans left England (and Denmark?) to avoid being persecuted for their religion and also to allow them to persecute those who were not Puritans. Luckily, we eventually had people like Thomas Jefferson and John Adams who agreed that there would be no religious test for American citizenship, and that the government could not interfere with religious belief. After all, she is an American ,too! and in the spirit of capitialism,if you don’t WANT to know what she is saying, then don’t read it ..After all, it was our Christian forefathers, who came to the New World to escape religous persecution in Europe, and to build a Great Nation based on religous freedom. They would be appalled at this sort of reaction to somone defending a company’s right to give out scriptures from the Bible. It’s not like you HAD to read the little card; if you don’t read it , how can you be offended ?
As for supporting Newt, well, that’s her right to do so also too. IF you like Sarah, then you’ll consider her decision to support him while thinking about the type of path he would lead this country. and if you think less than kindly of Sarah, and her political acumen- she WAS the mayor of a town, and the govenor of a state with a population less than most major cities in the US for over two years, which qualified her to be chosen by the Republican Party for the 2nd highest position in the US , well, then you can quietly discount her position on a Presidental candidate…Just because you have Free Speech, doesn’t mean you have to be all snarky about it… you can be polite while disagreeing, you know- The Golden Rule applies even to those who aren’t devout Christians.

Don’t tell that to Palin, Slip…. She’ll break out that large Star of David and start wearing it again!!!

        • Zyxomma says:

The same thought passed through my mind. I’m glad you posted that. Of course, in the St. James Bible, the order of the books of the “old” testament are out of order, but Psalms is definitely one of ours.

And the hidden truth is that it probably cost a fair piece of money to print those cards up, and they’ve run out of the last batch. AA just put a nice PC reason on it, rather than admit it helps the bottom line.

But then, any amount of thinking past the obvious for any reason is truly beyond SWWNBN…

Yeppers, that was the final straw or penny, whatever.I really liked the little cards, they made good book marks before I got the electronic book. I had no problems with the Bible verses and I am not a Christian. If they had branched into other inspirational sayings, would have been just fine with me. Anyway this gets cut, I’m fine with it.

Palin may be biting off more than she can chew lately. The story about her ridiculous prayer card ploy to get into the headlines only made her look out-of-touch and Talibanesque: http://politico-junkie.blogspot.com/2012/01/uk-sarah-palin-complains-about-airline.html.

And her constant defense of Gingrich may earn her another loser pin to go along with losing the safe republican NY Congressional seat for her party by supporting Doug Hoffman, losing the safe Republican seat in Delaware because of her support of she-who-is-not-a-witch, and losing a sure deal to defeat Harry Reid by supporting the empty-headed Sharron Angle. She’s on a roll!

And Newt’s comment that he would select her for his Cabinet lost him big points in the polls. Oh, too bad… 😉

    • Baker's Dozen says:

I think she should be the first colonist on the moon colony–far side of the moon, please. Since she’s so good at our history, she should do some researchin’ on what the Pill grins brought with them when they drove their Plymouth to the Rock of Gibraltar in Iowa, so she knows what to stock up on to take with her when she moves and has that first Thanksgivin’ with rill Moonites who can show her how rill capitalism works.

Yep, a few shovels, axes, seeds, a sharpnin’ stone, AK 47 and some hair spray oughta be all she needs. Strap her to the top of the rocket and get her ready for a 12 hour flight. Unfortunately, no fillin’ stations where you can get hosed down on the way.

“I can’t wait to see how she defends President Obama against the name calling, politics of personal destruction, and the rewriting of history from the GOP.”

Especially since she was responsible for so much of it in ’08. Fortunately, some of us have long, accurate memories. Fortunately, there will be no Gingrich administration to offer her a prominent position. Still, we have work to do, like getting voters to the polls.

Alaska Airlines, thanks for losing the prayer cards.

Not only do we have long, accurate memories, but we also have that wonderful series of tubes that files every bit of video or text that’s been posted on it. And it’s reallly hard to argue with video of yourself doing what you’re criticizing others for!

And I second the thanks to Alaska Airlines and will add an “It’s about time!” There are plenty of inspirational quotes that are secular in nature that would be more appropriate to distribute if they felt compelled to give out something, but quotes from any single religious text are NOT acceptable on a commercial airline.
