Open Thread – Mudpuppy Project: Day 7

The Iditarod mushers continue their race to Nome. As of about an hour ago, musher Aliy Zirkle is still in the lead with 12 dogs. She’s followed by last year’s Iditarod champion John Baker. Musher Zoya DeNure has just become the fourth musher to scratch from the race due to concerns about her dogs. Follow all the excitement at Iditarod.com!

Here are more reader submitted dog pics to enjoy during this week of dogdom!

Our newest pup Gypsy, a rescue. Formerly named Kiya.

Peanut isn’t a sled dog, but she is queen of the yard.

Our Molly aka Molly muffin, Molly ragamuffin, etc, with her favorite thing, a shoe.  She doesn’t want to chew them, nope that is for novices. She has a shoe fetish, I swear she does, and just wants to try to fit her entire body into the shoe.  It never works, but she tries, then she gets tired and normally falls asleep with her head on the shoe.  Maybe she is dreaming of shoes, who knows?

Shadow – Good hair Day vs. Bad hair day

“Here’s Glory my red-bluetick hound (and thanks to the Westminster Dog Show’s new breeds, I now know she’s an American English Coonhound!”

“Barkley is blue merle; Brooklyn is the tri.”

Please pass this video about the importance of the Affordable Care Act along to everyone you know:

After viewing ask anyone who wants to repeal it, why they are for giving life but against giving health care to children born with defects?

That was an excellent interview and a scathing indictment of Palin. I’d feel sorry for her if she weren’t so mean, destructive, and divisive. We can only hope that the focus of politics will get back to what’s good for the country, not what’s good for the party.

    • Irishgirl says:

That was so good I am going to watch it again.

This race – I’m not going to be able to sleep tonight! Aaron passing everyone (now third), Aliy passing again (now 2nd ) Dallas passing again (now 1st). John Baker in a steady 4th!

Sadly, two scratches in Unalakleet (so far into the race) by Jeff King with sick dogs, and another musher, Burkowitz, who was doing really well and of moving up in the top ten and then cut himself at the checkpoint. Dang!

Colleen moving up through the ranks with only 11 dogs – if she places in the top 20, the purse will help offset race costs. She won’t push the dogs if she thinks they can’t do it, but she has a new hero in the pack and he’s doing great!

    http://rogueskennel.com/blog/?p=1204

“Cole said out of nowhere Zoom stepped up and in single lead, which is even more amazing, ran in front of the team for two 70 mile runs during the day time. GO ZOOM! With all the bad luck Cole has had this race, it was good to hear one thing go her way. Hopefully it will continue for the remaining 346 miles they have left.”

    Go Rogues!

    • Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

Jake Berkowitz, not Burkowitz was the musher who cut himself. He was like this sleeper team no one was paying attention to, moving steadily up the ranks, then wham – out just like that.

      http://www.alaskadispatch.com/article/four-time-champ-jeff-king-scratches-after-dog-sitdown-near-unalakleet

“Berkowitz severely injured his hand while using a knife between Kaltag and Unalakleet. (Iditarod Race Marshal) Mark Nordman determined that the injury was severe enough to warrant the decision,” Iditarod spokeswoman Erin McLarnon reported in the release.

Berkowitz was in sixth place at the time he was withdrawn.”

Just read a number of updates and saw some pictures of King laying down in the snow to help shelter his sick pups!!
Hope all are OK, and that Collen gets some luck for the rest of the race.
      Thanks for the update!!

    more puppers!
this is really getting to be a look-forward-to event.
shadow- I never look as good on my good hair days as you look on your bad hair day 🙂
thanks to all who have been sending pupper pics!
thank you AKM for sharing them all.
watching our young rural Alaskan mushers doing well- a few more years and we’ll have some new names at the top of the leaderboard.
    Ms Robertia doing very well
front of the pack making ny head spin…
go dogs! go safe and well!

Will be napping on sofa here all night long..watching for the race updates..AND..by ‘DOG”..there better be experienced vets ..All Over..Every Dog..in those first 10 teams across the line..so help me DOG! I now fear less-then-stellar-judgements happening.

A female legislator presents (what I can only assume is snarky) legislation that will make men howl with indignation. Before receiving prescriptions for viagra, they must see a sex therapist and have partners sign affidavits confirming impotence! I think there should be Congressional hearings too–ones chaired by women with no men testifying–

In a year of so much bad shark news, it’s nice to know it’s not ALL bad. A new bottom-dwelling shark species has been discovered in the Galapagos:

Dogs, dogs and more wonderful dogs! I have a thing for houndies, so Glory is a beaut!

The race is heating up – it has not been this close in years and years! Aliy is hanging on to her lead by a hair, and being chased down by young Dallas Seavey who has trained harder than most, is calling his team “the monster team”. He might be right!

Aaron Burmeister who slowly crept up to the front with his strong 15 dogs has passed John Baker, who was passed by Dallas’ team also, for third place. With 15 dogs – he might be able to keep this pace up and creep up more himself. Aliy – don’t look over your shoulder, girl! YOU GO!

    Love all the pooches.

  13. UgaVic says:

I am still so enjoying the loves of so many Mudpups lives! Such a beautiful assortment of personalities and faces!!

The little stories are funny and the location of at least one in this group managed to get their pictures taken, on top of an ironing board??? 🙂

I will be sad to see the end of the Iditarod, although I am sure the contestants won’t be!!

    Thanks for all you do.
    P.S.
I am in a warmer climate for a winter break, and saw an ant. Here’s to your Mom!

They’re adorable. I had blonde cocker spaniels a couple of times and a black one too. I love them! Mine are Chica and Eloise, the Mexican rescues of Mudpuppies Day 2.

  17. Dagian says:

Look at all the happy puppies!

Hey – did anyone catch this one? It involves an UNhappy mudpuppy – unless she’s moved to Arizona for reals this time.

“Sarah Palin Bell Curveball: Obama Wants Pre-Civil War America”

    snip

“Palin told Hannity “it has taken all these years for many Americans to understand that gravity, that mistake that took place before the Civil War” and that what Obama wants “to do is go back to before those days when we were in different classes based on income, based on color of skin.”

    • Dagian says:

      *hangs head in shame*

I don’t know how I overlooked the thread re: Palin & her profound ignorance of US History.

I will go admire more of the happy puppies!
