Open Thread – Cat

We’ve had so many dog posts lately, I thought it was time to do a cat one. And this reminded me of when I first moved to Alaska, and the “cat” reference more often had to do with the large yellow Caterpillar vehicles, than the warm fuzzy purr machines. It made for much amusement when I’d hear Alaskany things like:

“He really abused that cat, but it still gets through the snow pretty good.”

“You should just sell that cat, and get a new one. You could get almost what you paid for it.”

“I don’t know how I ever would have been able to clear that five acre lot without my cat.”

“That cat is ready to die. He needs to get it in and replace some parts.”

Have been seeing Sarah on HuffPo almost every day. She is attacking President Obama. I expect she is trying to remain in the public eye. God, she is dumb.

We’re all concerned for the health of our ocean(s). Here’s a lovely blog post from Peter Seligmann, head of Conservation International:

Well in this tiny corner of Alaksa we have two of the fuzzy warm type of a CAT and one of the big, tough working, lmost never dies, the last resort for pulling out other equipment type of CAT!!

The bigger one has made many a project doable, cost little in comparison to work load, and helps keep us earning a living each year:-)

Meanwhile, back at HB80, the NRA-sponsored “stand your ground if you have a gun” bill…

    http://www.adn.com/2012/03/26/2392504/stand-your-ground-bill-in-spotlight.html

“Neuman said he got the wording for his bill from the NRA. An NRA lobbyist, Brian Judy, was the first person to testify for the bill when it was heard by the House Judiciary Committee on Feb. 9, 2011.

The Alaska Attorney General’s Office initially estimated the bill would cost the state an additional $450,000 a year because of the complexities it would add to the law. The office has since changed the budget impact to “indeterminate” but said it would result in “an increase in cases, to both screen referrals and prosecute those that are accepted.”

French said in an interview that the law is trying to fix something that isn’t broken.

“In court, already the odds are stacked in favor someone asserting self-defense,” he said. Police and prosecutors “can tell in every given situation who the woman is who’s carrying her grocery bag out to the car. They can tell the difference between those people and drug dealers and gang-bangers.”

Neuman’s bill would upset the balance to such a degree, French said, “you’ll see bad people beginning to assert claims of self-defense and using them in ways that the proponents of the bill have not really thought through.”

So…is there any lingering doubts about chowderheads in our legislature taking their marching orders from NRA and ALEC? Is that why we voted them in, to turn over our government to the corporations that sponsor and profit from these organizations?

I acquired several pairs of CAT socks, a couple CAT hats and longsleeve shirts. The shirts have thermal sleeves and are great to sleep in. The socks are men sized, so I use them like house slippers.

I also have 3 of the furry type cats that are not for wearing but do keep me warm on a cold night. :p their names are Sydney, Luna and Holly. The paw sticking out of the CAT box in the picture looks like it could be Luna’s.

    Happy Tuesday all.

Hello from pollen-world! Everything is yellow, including my Mrs. Merdle, and that means a trip to the carwash. Am watching a melt-down on FB from a person who so far has called FB socialistic and “why am I being forced to use timeline”. Bless her heart. She also too regularly posts the latest from Fox, which gives me something to do after lunch. I look up the truth and post it as a comment on her thread.

Himself is in Las Vegas for the day explaining things to people, so I am doing notonething. Except researching some things for my Councilwoman whom I adore. She is the hardest working thing! All for a tiny town with enough big mouths in it that give her a hard time.

Thank you for the cat. It is Deere season here.

Funny how RWNJ’s are quick to b*#ch about being “forced” to use FB timeline and calling it socialistic but they have no problem using this free and equally open to all SOCIAL network. Cracks me up everytime. Oh, and while on the subject of FB, I read yesterday that a recent study shows people with low self-esteem are the ones who post the most negative comments on FB and Twitter. So whine and complain all she wants, you got her number now. 🙂

Well, since we’re talking about land-moving equipment, you might want to know what’s happening to the Chaco in Paraguay (which, if you don’t want to click the link because it would be one of your 20 free articles at The Times, is being bulldozed for cattle ranching, displacing the remaining indigenous occupants):

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/25/world/americas/paraguays-chaco-forest-being-cleared-by-ranchers.html

“Tension already simmers over the growth of Brazilian landholdings. Tranquilo Favero, a Brazilian soybean farmer and rancher who is one of Paraguay’s richest men, enraged many Paraguayans when he said in remarks published in February that landless peasants had to be treated “like a swindler’s woman, who only obeys when beaten with a stick.””

Between the Mennonites (who have had communities in Paraguay for generations) and the Brazilians, there may soon be no Chaco left. It’s ground zero for deforestation.

When I first moved to Alaska, everyone was wearig CAT hats and bunny boots. Literally.

  13. Zyxomma says:

Funny that AK’s cats are just as likely to be machines as mammals.

If you want to know more about ALEC, which corporations are the major donors to this legislation-writing fascist engine, and which politicians are on the receiving end of their largesse (no surprise, Lisa Murkowski is #12), please read:
