“Don’t Bend Over, Alaska” Soon-to-be-Viral Video

Remember the $40 Rubber Chicken lunch I told you about yesterday – the one in which the Governor and his oil cronies are actually charging for a lunch to tell oil executives how great it will be for Alaskans to pay them billions in no-strings-attached money?

Here’s an awesome video called “Don’t Bend Over, Alaska” from radio host Bob Lester, calling out their oily BS. Let’s make this video go viral before tomorrow’s “rally.” You know what to do – watch it, and share it.

And here’s a little fun fact about ConocoPhillips. In 2010 they spent $89,169 on lobbyists in Juneau. Want to know what they spent last year? They paid $210,607 – almost three times as much. I wonder why?

But, wait. That’s just for the amount spent by Conoco on all registered lobbyists’ fees and expenses. What about other expenses spent on lobbying activities, like salary and expenses of in-house employees who engage in lobbying, or promotional activities like legislative receptions? Then what?

According to Legislative Research Services in Juneau, the combined total for Conoco  in 2010 was $580,668, and last year it skyrocketed to $1,009,557.

Sorry, Governor. Alaskans aren’t buying what you’re trying to sell. We’re not that stupid.

I used to think Parnell was not too bright, and hence his unmovable position, but he’s just outright corrupt. There’s no other explanation. I wonder if Alaskans can recall their governor….

When I talked to Anna Fairclough about the school lunch funding bill a few weeks ago, she said that they were working “feverishly” on the tax “restructure” and were not able to work on the school lunch bill (spending bill) because the restructure was necessary to prevent a “near-future negative revenue situation due to loss of oil company investment in Alaska”. I think she may have even had some level of belief in what she was saying, but I kept thinking, “If we are facing a revenue shortfall in the near future, why cut the amount we are charging for our resources? Why not increase the price of the oil?”

It’s gettin so hard to keep track of the crazy coming out of the RWNJs. My head hurts.

    Holy moley!
    Bob ?
Am I about to say “good on Bob Lester!” ?

    I guess I am.
    Good on Bob Lester!

Good on all Alaskans who are speaking up about this foolishness.

Am thinking you better add whatever we pay the Gov now to the lobbying $$s total, AKM.
    $1M ? Jeez.
Those folks quit lobbying and buying rubber chicken lunches and they’d save enough to offset a goodly portion of what they want from us.
    Oh wait-
At some level we are already generating the income they use to try to get us to give them more income, so we’re like paying them to lobby against us aren’t we?

Dear Captain Torpedo, aka Governor Parnell:
I have had some time to regain distance and thaw out the brain freeze your antics this last 2 sessions create everytime I am exposed to the nasty oily spumoni you peddle.
      Sir, really, sir, c’mon.
You and our Legislature are charged with developing law and regulations which allow us, all of us, the collective “we” which is the State of Alaska ,to manage our resources for the benefit of “we” , not the benefit of oil companies.
We understand that the oil companies have to make a profit . We do NOT accept that you and too many House members think it best to bargain from disadvantage, open fears about what might happen if the big 3 throw a hissy and pack up their pretty marbles and go home. Not the way to go, sir.
One of the most irritating pieces in the whole dealie is you and too many House members think this place of disadvantage is the right place to bargain from.
You telegraph that crappy hand of cards to the oilies, sir.
We lose before we even get to make a bid.
      Stop it.

  6. Bigtoe says:

Someone explain to me (because the Guv hasn’t) why NOT giving the oil companies more money is a bad thing? Just exactly what are they going to do if we don’t? If they take their toys and go home I’ll bet some other company would be more than happy to take their place.

  7. zyggy says:

Looks like the Oil Companies oiled the hands of your politicans. Just amazes me that if the majority of you are against this, how can this law pass? I hope your representatives keep the money from all the OIl boys and votes down the law. Not money, I mean all those lovely lunches and benies, yay, that’s the ticket.

  8. dizzy says:

I think it’s all too obvious – Parnell has been gearing up for his run at Congress or the Senate for a very long time. Parnell’s oil company boot licking is simply guaranteeing his campaign coffers are full of oily dollars for election time.

Nothing more, nothing less – simple pandering to the money/power brokers…

  9. Rvrat says:

Bob Lester? He is seriously conservative.
But I just don’t have time to go to lunch but I would ask “Them”; if there are any guaranties as to how much money they are going to invest in the oil patch and how many Alaskans they will hire.
This is so crazy, it’s hard to imagine how the leader of our State is trying his best to give away as much of our money as he can.
I’m guessing he will have a great job for Them when he’s out of office.

  10. Mrs Gunka says:

Me thinks your Governor is growing some very deep worry lines! Not at all becoming. Maybe he should call Sarah and get her doctors # to fix that. Seems there is a lot of that going around in the governor’s office.

  11. David Otness says:

I’ll admit to being pleasantly surprised to see Mr Lester doing such a bang-up job when I watched and shared this earlier.
I also re-posted the -Say no to the tax rollback petition with admonitions to certain towns in SE that are lagging in signatures.
I don’t know if it’s such a good idea for Outsiders to be signing it too, we need our own folks on this more than anything.
Back to the subject matter, a well done video with an epic ending!

  12. Jag says:

Bob Lester, a Quitter Friend? Isn’t he one of her flying monkeys? Is he legit?

    • AKMuckraker says:

In the giant Venn diagram of life, we happen to overlap on the oil issue. And I’ll leave it at that. 🙂

      • Zyxomma says:

😉 Seanoco Parnellips is a great coinage.

      • Jag says:

        You phrase that so beautifully!

      • fromthediagonal says:

hmmm… looks like Lester may just have some redeeming qualities?
Or is he merely protecting his wallet, which in this case may protect others’ wallets as well?

Either way, I would say: take his sentiments and run with them. The community/state can only gain when a loudmouth radio jock with a large right wing following goes David vs. Goliath on the oil exploiters and a compliant government.

Hope he ignites his followers… keep us posted!
