Palin Reacts to Ross Smackdown.

And here is the official word from the governor on the rejection of Wayne Anthony Ross.    Dateline Indiana:

“In an unprecedented move, the 26th Alaska Legislature today rejected Governor Sarah Palin’s nomination for attorney general. Lawmakers failed to confirm Wayne Anthony Ross by a vote of 23 to 35.

“I believed I knew what Alaskans wanted when I selected an individual who is a strong backer of 2nd Amendment rights, a staunch supporter of the state Constitution and a defender of life,” Governor Palin said. “Wayne Anthony Ross supports responsible, ethical development of Alaska’s rich resources. I’m surprised that legislators in this case really did not seem to represent their constituents and allowed themselves to be swayed by side issues. Mr. Ross is a fine Alaskan. He is held in high esteem by many Alaskans. I appreciate his willingness to serve the public.”

Side issues? Like being concerned if you’re a lawmaker who might be breaking the LAW?

    IMO, a ‘hardcore’ right-to-lifer wouldn’t have bothered with an “amniocentesis” as an abortion would not be a consideration under any circumstance. The argument may be made that she and the First Dud wanted to be ‘prepared’ for any potential genetic defects, but again, I don’t envision the hardcore crowd would normally be concerned by such things anyway as they don’t make allowances for abortion to begin with.

    I suspect that GINO had the amnio (or a CVS; chorionic villi sampling) after markers showed up for Down syndrome (DS) during a common scan at around 11 weeks of gestation — the nuchal translucency (NT) scan, which measures an area/fold at the fetus’ neck as there is a correlation with this measurement and an increased risk for DS. The NT scan is often done with some blood work (a triple screen or quad screen) in which certain hormones are analyzed in ratio to one another. As these markers (both the NT and the triple/quad screens) tend to have a number of false positive results, to know with certainty, a CVS or amnio is then done.

    I admit that I’m a little surprised to hear that GINO had considered abortion at all, considering what we’ve all heard her preach … (but I’ve not yet had a chance to see her speech in IN myself either).

    I agree that many couples do face that decision. The difference for me is that, as far as I know, none of THOSE couples went around for a year declaring that they know what’s best for the country as far as not allowing kids to get sex education or access to birth control.

    On this you have to give her credit, at least she admitted that she considered an abortion as I am sure many couples do when faced with knowing they having a child with special needs/ birth defect. Even hard core right-to-lifers.

    Regarding censorship at ADN, I am never posting there again. I guess that is what they want. Milk toast discussion, not real discussion. I never used a swear word there and never said anything nasty, just expressed negative viewpoints about Palin which were very valid. They are creating forums with discussions that don’t reflect reality. I have no desire to read there either for that reason.

    Legislators debated Ross for more than an hour in a joint session of the House and Senate before the vote. Ross’ Democratic opponents in the Legislature said their first sign he was truly going down came when Kenai Republican Sen. Tom Wagoner surprised them by standing up during the debate and saying that he was a no vote.

    I just got a email from Sen. Therriault . I know he voted for WAR. He was very nice and respectful…and I wrote him a email thanking him for his professional email. (vs. Dyson’s bogus one) here is what he wrote me:
    Thank you for contacting my office to express your opinion on Governor Palin’s nomination of Wayne Anthony Ross for the office of Alaska Attorney General.

    Approximately 1 hour ago, the joint session of the Alaska Legislature rejected Mr. Ross by a vote of 23 yeas to 35 nays.

    I would really like it if some smart person could put the emails of those Leg and Sen. who voted against WAR so we could thank them? I went through each email by hand and sent them email and I simply can’t do it again. Does anyone have the emails of who voted against WAR? Although Sen Therriault voted for WAR I wanted to respond to him b/c of his very nice email to me.

    Alaska: The self flagilation needs to stop! Whatever it is in your collective psyche that you’re punishing yourselves for, it’s plenty, and will cover transgressions for several decades to come.     Good question. How MANY has Sarah adopted? I’ve adopted 8. I’m 51 and my youngest is 4. If she truly walked the walk, she would have encouaged her daughter to give up the baby to a MARRIED mother and father, who had JOBS and maybe even an education to raise that little one. While were at it, I think Trig could also benefit from a real family, and not a photo op.

    The thing about her hypocrisy is she keeps on telling folks (in various twisted language) that she considered having a termination. And then she talks about having amniocentesis which everyone knows can cause miscarriage. And then there is the story of the Wild Ride, putting her baby directly at risk that way.

    She has no Right to Life credentials, in my opinion – none at all.

    Congrats to everyone! Today was a good day. Some random thoughts…

    The AG is supposed to represent ALL constituents of a state. What I heard from the legislators who voted nay is that they understood this. Those legislators voted against him because he was incapable of representing ALL Alaskans. The yea votes were generally “buddy votes.” He’s a great friend, neighbor, godfather… What a narrow focus. Those folks didn’t appear (IMHO) to have ALL Alaskans in their thoughts. The real win here is that 60% of the legislators voted with 100% of the population in mind. That’s a 100% win. (Bear with me because it’s 1:00am here and I should be asleep!) If the results had been reversed, my really deep-thinking math says it wouldn’t have been a 100% win. More like 60% voting on behalf of 60%….making it less than a 40% win for Alaskans. Clear as mud?

    Also. Too. Saw the drama queen Zeigler arrest video. He is all ass. He was on private property (where are the private property rights people when you need them?) and doesn’t have the journalistic gravitas of a reporter from TV Guide. STFU. You. (with Archie Bunker finger motions)

    Gee. WAR turns 65 and they give him a nice speech (probably written by WAR or his best buddies). I’ll bet if they had had public testimony last year about his colorful history, it may not have been such a pretty endorsement. How many legislators knew his “who ya gonna rape” stance?

    Bless you all who watched the Palin speech. I hate listening to her voice and watching her mouth when she talks. She has this repulsive snarky thing going on. I can’t watch.

    Good question. How MANY has Sarah adopted? I’ve adopted 8. I’m 51 and my youngest is 4. If she truly walked the walk, she would have encouaged her daughter to give up the baby to a MARRIED mother and father, who had JOBS and maybe even an education to raise that little one. While were at it, I think Trig could also benefit from a real family, and not a photo op.

    On a more serious note, folks. Congratulations to the Mudflats site and all of you bloggers (posters?) for the wonderful job of spreading the word about Lil’ Miss Sunshine and Alaska issues. I’m certain that your efforts were quite instrumental in persuading some of the legs to change their vote regarding WAR. Your’s was a true grassroots effort that culminated in actual tangible results, unlike the ReichWing Tea-Bagging parties.

    As a lifelong political wonk, I commend your efforts and envy you because I do not feel it necessary very often to engage myself in these matters in my own Commonwealth of Massachusetts. You see, virtually every pol here is a Democrat at both the state and federal level and I am proud to say that they represent my interests quite well. We do, on occasion elect a Republican Governor every once in a while just to keep some semblance of checks and balances. Nonetheless, i am proud to say that in the 389 year history of the Bay State, we have never had a full 2 term Republican Governor.

    But I digress. The point I’m trying to make is that I envy your participation because you folks can actually effect change for the better. I have become a student of Alaska politics now and would love to be an honorary citizen if you’ll have me.

    Plus, I kind of like this song gig better than my day job.

    And if you can take it – her 9 minute telephone interview after WAR lost. She is quite glib. No one ever asks her follow up questions. (Oh, follow up questions are considered gotcha.)

    She mentions that with Ross there was “a new sheriff in town” that the lege feared him “cleaning house.” She is also on record here stating that She Appoints; the 1987 ruling calls for open votes and she intends to follow the state constitution. I think she is headed for a new mavericky battle here also.

    Great news. The winds of change are really blowing up there. BTW, when something like this happens the usual rhetoric is that you nominated someone who supports the rule of law – not that you singled out their being a “strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment” and ” defender of life.” A little nuance goes a long way Governor.

    And like sports scores, blood pressure readings, bad odds and a host of other numeric listings, you never give the vote backwards: 23-35. I would hate to be the person in her office who is keeping the replacement lists. They’re in for a world of hurt.

    What if the Leg. Dems and Republicans had a open vote from the floor for Eagan? Sarah would have a hard time rejecting that choice since they will have done it the way she wanted it.

    Sarah could still might not accept their vote but she would be rejecting the Republicans, and would have gotten the open two party vote she said wanted.
    Next time the Leg. can go back to the way they have been filling the seat. I haven’t seen a single criticism of how that process has worked for 20 years, except that a real election would be preferable.

    It is my understanding that WAR will continue as the intrim AG until an official AG is approved by the next Leg. Hopefully this slap down will keep him on a short leash. And hopefully if he pulls anymore bull patty quasi,according-to-WAR legaleze, he will get slapped down quick.

    What a nutjob.

    He’s smiling and laughing the entire time. He’s constantly challenging the police with “tell me why” etc.

    Apparently the guy was NOT recognized media, was NOT in the designated media area and was accosting people entering the Walter Conkrite Media Awards. They don’t know what he was asking them but I did hear something about “she” being there. Would that be…..a blogger? Getting an award.

    The cameraman made a point to zero in on one of the cop’s jackets to get his name. Also after Ziegler was arrested, he resisted and would not move, fell down, was eventually moved to a fence (continuing to smile and laugh) and when the police asked the cameraman to turn the camera off, they didn’t. They just lowered it continuing the sound and pictures of feet. When Ziegler finally agreed to leave, the cops physically turned the camera off, but they continue to roll sound. Off campus, they took pictures of Ziegler’s poor, poor hurt wrists. Which wouldn’t have hurt if he hadn’t resisted arrest.

    What a fruitcake. Typical right wing whacko.

The Alaska Legislature is getting a work out this season and so far as I can tell, voting the will of their constituents — bravo. Seems incredible that Mrs. Palin can’t grasp it … but she obviously acknowledges (which surprised me) that she is out of tune with Alaskans. For her to not see this coming, and stating her surprise, does support a division between how she sees the state being governed and how the people see the state being governed. That’s quite an admission.
