Open Thread – Not For Sale

Nobody’s Senator But Ours.

When Alaska negotiates with multinational oil companies, Sen. Bill Wielechowski has the nerve to actually be on our side. So it’s not surprising that corporate interests from Texas to Britain—and their local lobbyists—are gunning for him this November. He’s always had our backs, and now we need to have his. If you cannot attend thisTuesday’s BBQ in Anchorage, please visit his website and support our senator.

Since school is about to start again, maybe you should check out Looooooosiana’s voucher schools so you can see all the neat stuff your child/grandchild will miss by getting a real education. Caution-do not imbibe any liquids while reading this.

They just announced that Sarah Palin will not be speaking at the Republican Convention. Just replace the word “concession” with “convention” in this scene from “Game Change” and you probably have a good idea of how it went down when they broke the news to her that she wasn’t ready for primetime.

I would gladly trade every rwnj located in iowa for one Senator Bill. You can always feed nutters to indigenous carnivores/omnivores in Alaska. I won’t mind.

At The Forum, a number of us were discussing our respect and admiration for nuns. Here’s one after my own heart:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/11/science/behind-nuclear-breach-a-nuns-bold-fervor.html?_r=1&ref=science

“With flashlights and bolt cutters, the three pacifists defied barbed wire as well as armed guards, video cameras and motion sensors at the Oak Ridge nuclear reservation in Tennessee early on July 28, a Saturday. They splashed blood on the Highly Enriched Uranium Materials Facility — a new windowless, half-billion-dollar plant encircled by enormous guard towers — and hung banners outside its walls.

““Swords into plowshares,” read one, quoting the Book of Isaiah. “Spears into pruning hooks.” The plant holds the nation’s main supply of highly enriched uranium, enough for thousands of nuclear weapons.

“The actions of Sister Rice, a New York native who grew up on a prosperous block in Morningside Heights, and her companions, ages 57 and 63, are a huge embarrassment for President Obama. Since 2010, he has led a campaign to eliminate or lock down nuclear materials as a way to fight atomic terrorism. Now, the three — two of whom, including Sister Rice, are free and are awaiting trial in October — have made nuclear theft seem only a little more challenging than a romp in the Tennessee woods.”

  6. Ripley in CT says:

Yeah, tried the forum just now… no go. Trying to get in touch with Irishgirl. If you’re reading this, I heard a rumor you’re coming this way next month. Holla.

Now there’s a W to be proud of, to support. Good luck, Senator Bill.

OT, so here’s another reminder for all you star-gazers:
    http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2012/10aug_perseids/

The Perseids always remind me that summer’s coming to an end.
From the front porch, I caught one brief blaze between clouds overnight.
    Yes, I made a wish.
Clear today, so I’ll be looking up again tonight, also, too, you betcha. 😉

Students have one last week of summer vacation.
Back to School for me tomorrow; a new year, a fresh start.
    Bring it on!

DH Happy is spoiling me rotten today. Blueberry pancakes for breakfast, just fired up the grill for burgers at lunch, with BLT on sourdough on the supper menu. Fresh tomatoes and cherries, and peach ice cream, and plenty of icy water with lime.
Off to the pool with a dragon tale…
    Life is good.

Since this is an open thread… any prognosis on when the discussion forum will be up and running, even feebly, again?

Feeling all out of sorts, without my mudpuppies to bounce off of. Comments section is nice, but with things heating up in the Prez race, economic situation, mass killings, environment, plus all the cool stuff we like to share with each other, I’m definitely missing my mudflats. Yes, not life-threatening, but, you know… *sigh*

Is there light at the end of this dim tunnel?
