The Gun Cathedral

In light of recent events and the national debate now raging, I thought it timely to share with you a jarring, brilliant and utterly original work of art I encountered at San Francisco’s de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park a couple of years ago.

The Spine and Tooth of Santo Guerro, by Al Farrow (b. 1943), is a cathedral constructed entirely of guns and bullets. The work is a striking commentary on the historical relationship between religious intolerance and warfare, in particular the Crusades and their violent conquest of the Holy Land. Farrow believes the world’s major religions to have undermined their moral authority with the claim that “God is on our side” when waging war.

“Santo Guerro” translates, of course, into “Saint War.”

Be interesting to have a school full of armed union teachers confronting certain anti-union,teacher hating, rwnj politicians on school property.

It’s rare that I zoom in on an internet photo. This is one of those rare photos. Amazing.

Bill would let teachers carry guns in Alaska
    BECKY BOHRER,Associated Press
JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — An Anchorage lawmaker is proposing legislation to allow school employees to carry guns on school grounds “for defensive use.”

The bill from Republican Rep. Bob Lynn is in the second batch of legislation filed ahead of next week’s legislative session. The batch was released Friday.

HB55 would allow school districts and private schools to adopt written policies spelling out the circumstances under which firearms could be used. It would allow for permanent employees, like teachers and administrators, to carry a concealed weapon if they have a permit and have completed training.

Isn’t this the same guy that’s backing the voter ID law that’s likely to disenfranchise some of his fellow Alaskans?

    • Lacy Lady says:

And where would these teachers conceal these weapons? In their purse, pockets, desk? Sounds like they want to turn schools into an Old West Saloon!

    • yukonbushgrma says:

Wouldn’t be at all surprised to find that some teachers are already carrying in school. Not advocating — just sayin’.

“Santo Guerro” is not “Saint War” but rather “Holy War”. (“St. Francis” is not “Santo Francisco” but rahter “San Francisco”, … etc). Interesting idea this artist had!
