Blinded Me with Science: Begich Town Hall Videos

Begich-TownHallTalk5-1-13Alaska Senator Mark Begich discussed issues ranging from guns, to veterans benefits. to the 800-pound gorilla in the room – Pebble Mine – in a town hall May 1st.

Out of the 50 or so attending the open Q&A with the Senator, roughly half of them were wearing either a “No Pebble” button or sticker. Attendees of the town hall were not pleased with Sen. Begich’s “let’s wait for the science to come in”  responses to Pebble Mine concerns.

Sen. Begich also discussed plans to help veterans work through the problems at the Veterans Administration, and saving a local landmark from federal laws.

Check out the videos below to hear his remarks on Pebble, the EPA, and why he’s waiting to decide if the mine is good or bad for Alaska.

[we will add the full hour long town hall later today]

Begich will never lean to the left, but at least it is possible to push him towards the center. His R opponents? They are racing each other to the lunitic right wing fringe.

Wait for the science? Well, I’m thousands of miles away, on an island off the other coast of the continent, and I can see that science from here. Earthen dams for mining waste + salmon + seismic activity = DISASTER.

Have you ever seen an open pit mine? It’s one of the sorriest sights on earth. In fact, they’re visible from SPACE:

If 20 dead kindergartners and a 90% approval rating for changing how we sell guns in this country cannot get Congress to do something besides bow and scrape to the NRA and the gun lobby, we need a new congress.

Begich is not a “moderate”. There is nothing “moderate” in cowardice.

Begich is a politician. He is listening to the 10% of the population that are whipped up about the second amendment even though I bet none of them have read it.

  4. Tom Northup says:

Why does it seem that once a person attains a political position they can’t seem to side with the peoples positions? Do they only think of their next term in office and kiss up to the corporations for their re-election monies? Perhaps we need to limit the terms of all politicians to one term in office.

  5. Ice Gal says:

Really wait for the science to come in? What part of if you destroy a salmon stream it no longer supports salmon do you not understand mark?
Your quest for reelection is making it harder and harder to vote for you. If I wanted a regressive republican senator I would vote for your opponent.
