It’s Flag Day! So here are some flags!

I love Flag Day.

It’s the one day that (maybe outside of July 4th) that people get into flags. When I was in elementary school I won 1st place in every Flag Day competition (they were mostly collages).

Oddly I don’t even know the history of Flag Day – but I don’t care… usually these things have some horrible racist and or genocidal (see: Columbus Day). If you’re interested – go to google.com and google “Flag Day.” Don’t post what you find in the comments. I like living in ignorant bliss.

Anyway. I’m going to go tomorrow and buy a Flag… but for now – here’s several of my favorite photos of flags that I’ve taken.

(Yes, I realize that this post sounds like is was written by Rain Man… I don’t care. Flags are cool…even with the socio-political BS that they carry with them)

Taken in Provincetown, Mass. at the docks. (excellent New England Clam Chowder about 500 yards from here)

Awesome kid at a May Day immigration rally in NYC. Kid seriously knew how to pose.

Also at the immigration rally in NYC. Just a cool photo of some flags.

At the 9/11 memorial in Pennsylvania back in 2005. It was just a fence, which was perfect...cops and firefighters from all around the country has left hats, jackets flags there... it was an amazing spot.

This awesomely insane guy was at a 9/11 Truther protest in NYC a couple years back. He was so crazy that Alex Jones got into an argument with him… because of how racist and insane he was. Seriously.

Taken early on in the Occupy Wall Street protest. Possibly one of my top 5 favorite images of my work during OWS for TheMudflats. He stood on the corner of Zuccotti Park.

Taken during OWS – at the top of Zuccotti Park. Don’t remember much of what was happening during this photo – just the silence of people taking in the moment.

Taken minutes before my arrest during the #D17 Duarte Park protests - this awesome Occupier - who was on rollerskates, on top of a ladder wearing a short skirt... posed for all of us photographers.

I was thinking larkspur was poisonous, but then so are lots of rwnj. I might be wrong about larkspur.

From Mother Jones-try to get a rethuglican to write something nice about Obama. Kinda funny/freaky ATST. Raise more flags(trying to stay on topic)

Lotta flag waving going on there 🙂 Mostly of the red flag variety… hehehehe.

This should raise some flags about what teens are learning and why they feel “entitled” to spout this garbage. Teach your children well…….

Yowzers! Back in ‘my day’, siblings and I were raised with the Fear of G_d in us that something we’d carelessly/foolishly do or say would reflect badly on my father’s [work] position and/or on my parent’s standing in the community. My husband and I raised our kids the same — with a healthy fear of G_d that their thoughtless/jackass actions could (and would!) reflect very badly on their dad’s job and on his and my standing in the community. And not only reflect badly on us, but on the entire family.

While I think it totally inappropriate to ‘threaten’ a child through pee-your-pants fear via dire warnings, in this instance, I embraced it wholeheartedly. Fortunately, neither my siblings nor I, nor my children, suffered any harm from that ‘threat’ constantly hanging over us. The reason for that, most probably, is that far and away the bigger and most often lesson taught was: Respect. Respect for self, for family, and for others. Would that more kids today were modeled good old-fashioned Respect. Alas. beth.

I missed putting out my flag – I need a new pole for it. The hardware holding it up disintegrated. going out to buy a new set this weekend. I have always had a flag to display, even had on on my fishing boat. I taught both my kids the ‘rules’ for displaying a flag correctly and that honoring the flag is a good thing, and that it is OK to cherish our symbols.

Lately, it seems that there is an entire strata of our society that has moved from honoring our symbols to worshipping them as if they were the whole culture. Glad I don’t have to try and expain the differance to my young children, that they are old enough now to understand the differance between admiration and hero-worship; that they are old enough to see the differance between honoring a symbol and destroying everyone that does not share your view.

Thanks for the great photos. I especially liked the kid. And who doesn’t like Eddie Izzard?

    • beth. says:

Excellent post, fishingmamma. Thank you! beth.

    • mike from iowa says:

We also need to amend the rules for flag disposal. The very next time a rw chickenhawk wraps themselves in the flag and claims to be more patriotic than anyone else, that is the appropriate time to burn the flag. They toast their patiotic cred wearing the stars and stripes, they can become toast in a like fashion!.

  5. Zyxomma says:

Not into flags. Just not my scene. But the Eddie Izzard clip was absolutely hilarious. Thanks, Zach.

  6. AKjah says:

Thanks Zack nice compilation. Not sure i want to fly any flags lately. At the moment my alligence is stuck in the mud.

    • AKjah says:

I do have an’ allegiance’ to fixing wrongs.

      • benlomond2 says:

There is a chapter in “Stalky and Co.” by Rudyard Kipling called “The Flag”….about how the Flag is something to be venerated, but not made into something to be be wildly displayed. IMHO, Americans make too much of a big deal about the flag…if you aren’t WILDLY enthusiastic about displaying it, you aren’t a “Rill Amurican”..

        • mike from iowa says:

Was this aimed at them damn deer in your garden? I just hate to see a whitetail deer wave their lily-white flag as they amble off through my garden with veggies in their mouths. The bastards!

          • benlomond2 says:

nah… it was aimed at all those “Rill Americans” that wave flags all over the place , jump up and down about “supporting the troops” , and then go home and sleep in their warm beds having never served a day in the service and moan about providing funding for veteran services…..in particular frigging Chicken Hawk politicians… sorry- some of this crap about being “Patriotic just seems to have struck a nerve with me lately….. went to NM highway patrol graduation for nephew and refused to stand up when they asked vets to stand… … personally I think every American male should do 2 yrs OVERSEAS right after high school, so they’d SEE what the heck the rest of the world is like, and get some of their silliness knocked out of them . make their parents sit up and notice just what the heck is going on too, if “Little johnny” is actually out there… … and might be in Harm’s Way… about the only GOOD thing about the Nam Draft is that a lot of Americans started paying attention to what was going on for a change, because THEIR KIDS were possibly in jepordy.. ok… enough soap box…..time to go clean the remington and wait for Bambi to show up…. 🙂

            • mike from iowa says:

Good for you. These “chickenhawks” need to be taught that the Constitution they swear to uphold and protect INCLUDES ALL PEOPLE,that means LGBT,persons of color, handicapped and the least among us. IMHO the only people wanting special rights are fauxknee christian, rwnj, wealthy, whites. Hopefully they will soon be recalled to their Mothership and leave the rest of us alone.

            • Alaska Pi says:

I love flags of all kinds but have gotten terribly, awfully tired of the rill murrican’s flag antics in recent years too.
              The list is long.
Amongst my family and friends we have “welcomed” home too many flag draped coffins for too many years. They contained the mortal remains of Catholics, Protestants, atheists, “brown” people,” white” people, “yellow” people, “red” people…
straight people, gay people. They contained the end of dreams and hopes for the future for many more than the souls of those who died.
The battles at home over services for veterans has turned my stomach for years and years.
And the rill murrican doofs never do manage to offer much more than lip service to those -who-have-died-for-our-freedoms whilst spitting on vast swaths of Americans , do they?

BTW, little Joanie should be out there too ben.

              • benlomond2 says:

Agree on that Pi, … I have a niece serving with the Army in Korea at the moment , and yes, she’s part of the LGBT community… chuckle, and a TOUGH little s@#t she is ! had her nose and ribs broken during hand to hand training… .( her drill instructor got busted for encouraging continued fighting when it was obvious that an injury had occurred).. There ARE times when the flag is appropriate ( and yes , I liked the pics that have placed here for our viewing.)

ps. have RIPE Raspberries .. but not enough to dry yet…

  7. benlomond2 says:

    shell oil stops drilling plans….http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2013/06/14/a-major-setback-for-shell.aspx
now.. if I can stop those dang deer… busted thru the fishing line and nailed my string beans again !! ok.. where is the electric fence wire….

    • Alaska Pi says:

hang some skull and crossbones flags on that electric fence!
      6#@#%^ing deer!

      • benlomond2 says:

ohh!ohh!hh! will have to change avatar pic tomorrow….just finished mowing yard in cool of the late afternoon,,, and … I have RIPE RASPBERRIES !!! looks like only a dozen or so ripe ones..but they be herrrreee!! now I REALLY gotta take care of those deer !

        • Alaska Pi says:

yup. wanna see the jolly lomond flying tomorrow!

Gotta tell ya,flags are nice, but did someone(s) kidnap Jeanne and we are waiting for a ransom note or something? Inquiring minds want to know.I’m apparently missing something besides marbles.

    • Alaska Pi says:

      You don’t have any marbles?
      mikey!

Am hoping Ms AKM is goofing off doing something fun. Til then flags ARE cool.
Music is cooler though. And music in the midst of whatever-it-is is …
      http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/15/arts/music/music-in-istanbul-is-intermission-for-a-protest.html?hp&_r=0
(the video made me cry. nothing much makes me cry except smashing fingers or toes and that is mostly because I can’t swear fast enough)

      • mike from iowa says:

Music soothes the savage beasties. Makes one wonder why Slipstream and his brother vaqueros didn’t haul a baby grand around whilst trail driving wild cukes.to market. The exception to the rule,as per usual,is rwnj. The only soothing music to them is the sound of massive wealth cascading up and the hunger pangs of the masses.

        • Alaska Pi says:

          Too right.

          http://montclairsoci.blogspot.com/2013/06/tax-expenditures.html

I’m thinking we should be changing that tune…

          • mike from iowa says:

‘nother tune needs changing. We had another three plus inches of rain in about a half hour today with fifty plus mph winds. Lots of tree branches down and the Little Sioux River is almost bank full near Sutherland which means my old hometown of Cherokee is gonna get flooded for a third time this year. Neighbor a mile and a half North got tractor stuck planting yesterday. My spuds and onions were blown flat today but most have straightened up. Wettest spring on record for ioway. Last year after early June we couldn’t buy a rain. Like I said,it all evens out eventually. +1 for your above post. Gonna find a gold star thingy for everyone who posts on here.
