Open Thread: Peace Breaks out in Kiev

I’m back from Ukraine and I have many photos. I’ll be posting more as editing time allows. Until then, enjoy the relative calm in Eastern Europe with this peaceful moment on the barricades of Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square).

      oh brrrr!
We’ve been having wind chills of that ilk and my face is wind burned.
      Stay warm there mikey!!
Spring better be on its way.
I just ordered the last of seeds and supplies tonight. Am about buried in starting stuff already but just had to try a few new things… just had to.

Maw Nature chickened out and only got down to 14 below, which is still a record for usuns. Just got my seeds in the mail. Will buy seed potatoes next week. Onions will be here around the 7th of next month, just in time for a blizzard, prolly. Got to run a faucet day and night because water lines have been freezing outside of people’s houses. When it starts to warm up the frost goes deeper. You need to stay out of the wind elae you’ll get pneumonia and mikey will be sad:(. Had it twice and last time a lung collapsed and mikey spent some time in intensive care(almost thirty years ago). 🙂

The wind finally stopped blowing here so now we are toasty in the teens and twenties ABOVE zero. Practically tropical so no getting sick for me 🙂
My poor ole chapped face is especially happy about the no-wind dealie – eeks! When it blows here there is no place to get out of it. The wind picks snow/ice crystals off the mts and smacks you with em. Least this time it didn’t whup itself up enough to pick gravel off the streets and throw it . Lots of broken windows when that happens…
Do you buy spuds locally there? I’ve ordered mine from an Alaskan farm but given how big the state is , it is not exactly local but it is only 600+ miles away 🙂
They are not due til end of April. Can’t wait to put on my Spud fairy cape and deliver seed spuds round 🙂
Our light here is gaining by over 5 minutes a day- each week almost 40 minutes- but we still have about 2 months before the dadgum bears start waking up, thank heavens.

I buy my spuds at Bomgaar’s stores-a regional farm store similar to Tractor Supply or Shoppers Supply. Spuds cost around $16 for a fifty pound bag. You can buy smaller amounts starting around 35 cents/lb. They also set up greenhouse for flowers and veggie plants and they sell some varieties of trees, fruit and ornamental. Birch, too,I believe.Nearest Bomgaar’s store is my original hometown,Cheoikee, about 20 miles due South. Seed spuds are grown in Minn.and are bat-shit crazy like Bachmann.

Wow! $16/50lbs! Jeez- seed catalogs will send 2 lbs for about that much to us here.
The farm I buy from is way cheap compared to them but nothing like what you have!
There were a couple feed and seed/ seed and feed (?) stores in the town I lived in during college. I loved those places.
The chicks and ducklings in the spring, the piles and piles and piles of useful neat “”stuff’ , the bags of feed and seed, the pig-crossing sign ( and the pigs who roamed free ) at the entrance gate of one of them. I can’t remember all the cool hoolibobs at each after all these years but those places kept me sane whilst living in a tiny studio apartment with no yard or garden or pets or much of anything which felt like living:-)

    • Wear your woollies ….!!

As this is the open thread I don’t feel inhibited posting this link:

Gee Slip.remember the time me and you never used to hang out together? Neither do I,but then I am getting up there(just turned 61). I remember 5th grade when JFK was assassinated as clearly as if it only happened 51(almost) years ago. The ground hog was a nice touch. I prefer bears dead and am sorry you couldn’t see the way to add some birch trees for my enjoyment. Other than that, you done good. 🙂 🙂

    • benlomond2 says:

I remember when JFK was assassinated. at the base movies in Morocco, They showed a Newstime movie clip at school the next week. I worry sometimes, that our current President could be in such a newsclip, with all the posted hate on social media.. Do we really have Americans that screwed up? I didn’t like Bush for where he took our country, but I just endured it ..of course, it was even scareier to think of CHENEY taking over ! 🙂

      • mike from iowa says:

Did you ride the Marakesh Express? 🙂 I was 10 and in Edith Benson’s 5B class,Webster School Cherokee, iowa in 1963. As i have stated before,I thought muy little league baseball career and life was over after we were told about the Potus. Our gubmint warned us all about them nasty, murdering Commies and I was certain Armegeddon was upon us. Turns out my government propagandized us younguns to fear evil Russkies. They are still lying. You are dead right about dickless cheney.

        • benlomond2 says:

nahhhh. My dad bought a mid-1940’s Chevy (Black, of all colors to get in Africa!.. no AC, obviously!), and we did trips all over the country.. Tangiers, Rabat, Marakesh, Casablanca, the Atlas Mountains, Fez, Medina, then he got a VW Bus in Spain, crossed over the straits and drove it down to Kenitra,(where we were stationed) and sold that Chevy as fast as he could. but still no AC.. dang it!
We were “locked down” during the Cuban Missile gig, and the base was in mourning when the Thresher went down.. Interesting times…

          • mike from iowa says:

It is a balmy 1 degree above. High of 3 degrees and16 below tonight and tomorrow night.High of 22 on Tuesday. My garden is gonna have to wait awhile. 3-6 inches of snow today,as well. Keep warm,my friend. Spring is coming. 🙂
