Alaska’s landscape has an unusual feature that allows us to enjoy cheap bananas in the Interior and other things that make life possible in the subarctic. The Nenana River, born on the south side of the Alaska Range, makes a U-turn and flows north through the mountains. With it comes a wide, low corridor that has favored builders of both the Alaska Railroad and Parks Highway.

Pope Francis has called for more respect for nature, branding the destruction of South America’s rain forests and other forms of environmental exploitation a sin of modern times.

The two live together on the Listuguj Mi’gmaq First Nation in Quebec, but over the years they’ve had to travel to Montreal so Louis can see a kidney and thyroid specialist. “I usually go with him every six months and I’ve been doing this for years,” says Jake Metallic. “He has bi-annual check-ups.”

The Nation/Foreign Policy In Focus – Surging Violence Against Women in Iraq

Shortly after their conquest of Mosul, young men armed with assault rifles went door to door in Iraq’s second-largest city, taking “women who are not owned” for jihad al-nikah, or sex jihad.

From June 9-12, women’s rights activists documented thirteen cases of women who were kidnapped and raped by militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) or DAIISH, the Arabic shorthand for the group’s name.

Ms Pi,this Judge Davis sounds like a real sweetheart-if you happen to be white.

    • Alaska Pi says:

I read the documents there. The behavior of multiple judges there, none of which is in dispute, is beyond disgusting.
The judge singled out for most comment ? Pffffttt!

Ms Pi,I can send you asparagus seeds for next Spring. They survive at least minus 35 degrees since we have hit that temp twice in the past two winters. You can scatter them through the forest like Johnny Asparagus Pi. 🙂 Be my contribution to making life “bearable” in your forest ridge with bears.

    • Alaska Pi says:

Oh- that would be great fun mikey! Would have to find an asparagus green hat or something which goes with my spud Fairy cape…

I’ve been talking to folks about what their parents grew here before so much was flown /barged in. Asparagus did do quite well here but folks quit growing so many, many things including asparagus.

      http://www.alaskadispatch.com/article/why-does-alaska-produce-so-much-less-food-50-years-ago

My folks grew everything they could, gathered what they could (sometimes the bears beat ya to the berries- dang! ) and with hunting, fishing, and raising chickens , they only bought dry goods.
We were spoiled rotten as kids grazing our way through peas and strawberries, raiding the smokehouse for salmon or venison, and looping back through for razzies or currants.

  5. Alaska Pi says:

Thank you Zach. I’m still pretty much ignoring any news outside my neighborhood for now.

We are raining like we pretty much always do for a couple weeks after the 4th and people are sighing about summer being over which they pretty much always do when it rains for a couple weeks after the 4th.

My asparagus finally came up. I so want it to take hold and grow here.

And that is the news from the ridge… in the forest… next to the melting icefields.
