Ohio Dan Gets Cocky, Goes to Ohio

There’s nothing like a couple polls giving you a slight edge in an Alaskan political race, to make the inexperienced Alaska politician feel a little cocky.

U.S. Senate candidate Dan Sullivan has spend the entire election cycle so far dodging accusations he’s a carpetbagger from Ohio, who moved to Alaska for a Senate seat which will be purchased for him by the Koch brothers, and his wealthy family and friends in the Buckeye state.

Sullivan turned up Sunday as the dreaded “empty chair” at a candidate forum that was attended by incumbent Senator Mark Begich, and Libertarian candidate Mark Fish. That’s two marks against Dan Sullivan. (<—See what I did there?)

Election day is 36 days away, and campaigning is fast and furious. Every debate is critical… so what could have kept Ohio Dan away? Not the flu, not a family emergency, not a delayed flight. Turns out Dan was feeling a little homesick, and hightailed it out of Alaska, showing up in Cleveland to raise more cash for his Senate campaign. Hey, it takes a lot of money to convince Alaskans you’re an Alaskan, and the best source of that money is apparently, his home town.

While the other Alaska senate candidates were answering questions about Alaska, Dan Sullivan was prepping for his big homecoming, a secret fundraising trip to Cleveland. Sullivan continues to raise more money from Ohio donors than from any other state, including hefty sums from his wealthy family and friends.

It’s not surprising that Dan Sullivan tried to keep this fundraising swing back home under wraps as he continues to try to convince Alaskans that he is one of them. But he’s not fooling anyone.
His primary opponent, Mead Treadwell, put it best: “I’ve got a jar of mayonnaise in my refrigerator that’s been there longer than Dan Sullivan’s been in Alaska.”

Ouch.

Cleveland.com, from the Land Where Dan’s Bread if Buttered, remarked on the visit:

“…his Cleveland-area roots and prodigious fundraising in Ohio are a source of attack from Begich and other Alaska Democrats. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, the Cleveland area is by far the biggest base of money for Sullivan, whose family runs RPM International, the coatings and sealants giant.

Money is necessary in today’s politics, but by relying on vastly more campaign money from Ohio than from his adopted state, Sullivan inevitably helps feed the Democrats’ narrative — that the candidate is an outsider. Or, as the Alaskans put it, an Outsider, with a capital O.

In Dan’s case, we’ll add the capital UTSIDER too.

American Bridge, an opposition research and spin outfit close to Democrats, was ready with a billboard at 14th and Euclid: “Ohio welcomes home its native son DAN SULLIVAN.”

Don’t take that as a slogan proclaiming Ohio pride.

Oh, Snap!

Opposition research outfit, American Bridge, got awesome brief and blurry video footage of Sullivan as he showed up for this weekend’s fundraiser at the Cleveland Union Club. The video was picked up by The Washington Post.

With the new influx of Cleveland Cash, expect to receive more campaign literature like this one below, proclaiming how “Alaska Strong” Ohio Dan really is.

Really.

No, REALLY.

He’s as old-time and comfortable in Alaska as this desperate Alaska flag is in the Middle East.

    Alaska: Arkansas North

Arkansas is less “moving to the right” than it is being shoved in that direction by a resistless tide of campaign cash — because to do so would be to deny the voters their agency in selecting their leaders, and that is a step too far for conventional political reporting. How do you prove someone has been conned? How do you prove that hundreds of thousands of people have fallen for the same sales pitch, rather than making their own independent decisions.

  2. Mo says:

Our Republican voters would rationalize voting for the re-animated corpse of Josef Stalin if the Kochs put up the funding and ALEC wrote the agenda.

They are unable to vote any way except GOP. Just. Cannot. Do. It.

Because they imagine they’re so-o-o-o smart and well-informed. [sorry if I caused a keyboard coffee spew]

Hey, GOP geniuses, check out Dunning-Kruger Effect.

Honestly, I’ve always been very leery about the tendency in Alaska to assign credibility to anyone based on the length of time he or she has lived in Alaska. Calling oneself “a lifelong Alaskan” never meant much to me, even when I lived there. BUT – after the discovery today that he claimed Maryland as his permanent address for years while also claiming Alaskan residency is way, way out of bounds. I think one could be an excellent political representative even if one has spent only two or three years in the state. But I guess the operative word here is “excellent”.

“That’s two marks against Dan Sullivan”
yup- we see what you did there !
And it is why we all love you so… well, along with your eerily lifelike drawings
    😉

  5. slipstream says:

An investigation in Maryland has found that Ohio Dan legitimately claimed principal residency in Maryland for 2006 to 2008.

This means that Ohio Dan committed voter fraud by voting an absentee ballot in Alaska in 2008. His residence was in Maryland, not Alaska.

And he lied about it. Check the ADN ariticle.

      He’s a sleaze…
      A frickin sleaze.
Slimin off to Ohio to raise bucks,
      Sayin he lived here…
      What a sleaze…

The credit is available on only one “principal residence”, and the homeowner must actually occupy or expect to occupy the dwelling for more than 6 months of a 12 month period beginning with the date of finality and including July 1 for the taxable year for which this credit is sought.

Only the owner’s principal residence is eligible for the Homestead and the Homeowner’s tax credit and other State and local tax credits and programs. In addition, only the owner’s principal residence is eligible for “semi-annual” property tax payment program. The Department may request documentation to verify that a dwelling is the principal residence of a homeowner (§ 2-218(a) Tax-Property Article, Annotated Code of Maryland).

      Miller time again??!!!
      Blech.

  6. sierraseven says:

Daddy Sullivan retired some years back from his position as CEO of RPM International, but Dan’s brother Frank was at the helm when one of the company’s subsidiaries, Tremco Inc., admitted to (and paid out a $61 million settlement for) overcharging the government for roofing materials, supplying substandard materials, and failing to inform the GSA that they were selling the same materials for a lower price through another of their companies.

The facilities involved included VA hospitals.

    • Dagian says:

Whoa – that’s awful when it happens at all, but doubly so when it involves hospitals. The only way to make it worse is to evict blind orphans.

  7. bucsfan says:

I have a question. Is the above picture from Sullivans official campaign? I believe it is a violation to use military images in campaign literature or ads. Can someone clarify this for me where the image came from?

    • mike from iowa says:

2.6.4. All members of the Armed Forces, including AD members, members of the RC not on
AD, and retired members, are prohibited from wearing military uniforms at political campaign or
election events (references (k-o) apply). This prohibition is not applicable to the provision of
joint Armed Forces color guards at the opening ceremonies of the national conventions of the
Republican, Democratic, and other political parties formally recognized by the Federal Election
      Commission.

      There are probably other regulations,too.

      • mike from iowa says:

Members not on active duty are freer to campaign, but they still face restrictions. Campaign communications including their duties, titles, positions, and photos in uniform must also include a disclaimer like this one:

“John Doe is a member of the Army National Guard. Use of his military rank, job titles, and photographs in uniform does not imply endorsement by the Department of the Army or the Department of Defense.” [DOD Directive No. 1344.10, section 4.3.1.2]

If Sullivan is not on active duty he needs to add this disclaimer to his ads.

  8. 1smartcanerican says:

I’ve been watching Dan’s shenanigans for the last few months and I truly hope that there is a “rill big dill” made of this trip to Ohio for funds to pay for his “I’m an Alaskan” race! May it be all over the news, all over the papers, and with lots of political ads promoting his strong Ohioan home.

It’s time for Alaskans who care to get other Alaskans to vote for an Alaskan – Senator Begich! At least he has Alaska in his heart and soul and he works hard for all Alaskans.

  9. Carol says:

So now we know why Sullivan wasn’t at the debate. Commenters on other sites suggested he was going a Marine weekend. Short answer – no. Long answer – Ohio money more important to Sullivan than informed Alaskan voters.

  10. slipstream says:

You have to admit: the empty chair has more credibility than Ohio Dan.

  11. Hedgewytch says:

How any Alaskan can say, with a straight face, that Dan Sullivan is an Alaskan, has Alaskan’s best interest at heart and will work to promote Alaska’s needs is freakin’ delusional. Unfortunately the delusion is strong in many areas of the state where all you have to do is look patriotic, look Christian, and have an “R” beside your name to get people to vote for you.

    • mike from iowa says:

From what I have observed of Alaska from afar, you’d have a hard time convincing me that rill Alaska born and bred whitey wingnuts have Alaskan’s best interests at heart and work to promote Alaskan’s needs. korporate amerika’s needs I’ll agree with you,Alaskan’s not so much. Gawd! I don’t know how you people can stand these pols. You have my sympathies.

  12. gin perdide says:

mayo in the frig cracked me up. Alaskans better wake up and put a stop quickly to that carpetbagger.
