Bird of the Week – American Tree Sparrow

The American Tree Sparrow is mis-named. It breeds in Alaska and Canada, north of the treeline, far from trees. Early European settlers thought it looked like the Eurasian Tree Sparrow, an unrelated species, and the name stuck. The handsome, brown-capped little sparrow breeds in alpine habitats across Alaska, between the Brooks Range and the Coastal Range.

This is one of the smaller Alaska sparrows, best seen in spring when the male perches on top of low bushes, singing to establish his territory and  to find a mate.

Camera geek stuff: f4, 1/250, ISO200.

It is iowa,benlomond2. Had another inch of rain overnight complete with thunderboomers and lightning. Still too wet to plant garden. Send your garden stuff here and we will keep it watered until you are done with schooling.Gotta empty my 55 gallon rain collector barrel into my cistern to water my garden,if I ever get one planted. iowa is much more than hogs and flat land and corn and soybeans. We got rain. Lotsa rain. Good for the garden type rain. Did I mention rain?:)

    • mike from iowa says:

I lied,it was only half inch. More coming Wed and Thursday.

I was just wondering if it ever rains there.

I’ll get back to you on that,Slip. I checked records and found it does rain here some. Thanks for asking.

I’m guessing these birds evolved back when caps were in fashion. If I didn’t know where the bill was,I might think the cap is on backward-countless,brainless human style.
