The Final Shenanigans Before Election Day

 

DAVID NELSON (Yes, him again)

So, hang on just a second… how long HAS David Nelson lived in the district he’s running in? Good question. The rules are very specific – you have to live in your district for a minimum of one year from when you file to run. Nelson filed on February 27, 2020, which means he had to have resided in HD15 since February 27, 2019. On his own Facebook page he says he moved to Muldoon when he got a job on JBER… in December, 2019.

There’s also the fact that he was making donations to the Republican Party in February 2020 using his then-current address (10 days before filing, not one year before filing), which is NOT in Muldoon. But you can only fit so much information into a handy infographic.

His opponent, Democrat Lyn Franks, has been a Muldooner for decades, just saying.

This guy needs to pull up stakes and go back to Florida. If you missed what a hot mess this wannabe lawmaker is in last week’s update, go HERE.

And if you’re wondering what’s going to happen about this – the deadline for reporting this kind of violation is 10 days after the person files for office. So it would have been in early March. This seems like an impractical deadline to say the least, but regardless of how late this came to light, Muldoon and JBER folks have a right to know.

WHERE’S SARA?

Back in the good ol’ days, it was a different Sarah who never wanted to be in Juneau. They even made buttons that said “Where’s Sarah?” that legislators on both sides of the aisle wore around the Capitol, protesting the then-governor’s chronic absence.

Well, now we’ve got Sara 2.0.


The Anchorage Daily News and Dermot Cole are calling out Rep. Sara Rasmussen (R-West Anchorage) for literally not showing up. Yes, every legislator misses a vote once in a while. But she’s the queen, missing a whopping 168 votes last session. That’s a LOT of votes.

That was 168 X’s. I think I have a finger cramp.

Last time we checked, the job of a Representative was to represent. That’s what voting is. But in 2019 she missed a full 21% of the votes taken. That’s about 1 in 5!

If you think that’s bad, in 2020 she missed FIFTY PERCENT! Imagine not doing half your job this year. Sorry, boss – it’s June! I’m outta here! Your chances of remaining employed would be even less than the chances of Sara Rasmussen being there to vote on any given day.

“But wait!” Sara Rasmussen will say. “I had to go to my great grandpa’s 100th birthday party in the Lower 48 right before the busiest week and the most important votes of the year, and then they wouldn’t let me back in because of covid! What could I do?”

Those gigantic blue air quotes should have gone around “The Truth” because … no. What she doesn’t say is that she was strongly advised by Bryce Edgmon, the Speaker of the House, NOT to leave the state – before she just decided to go anyway. Why was she strongly advised not to leave? Because legislative leadership was worried covid would make quarantining necessary for returning travelers. And guess what? That’s exactly what happened.  And grandpa’s party doesn’t account for her abysmal record before she left. Grandpa wasn’t responsible for 168 missed votes – she was. She barely made it a month in Juneau as a freshman legislator without being absent. So no pass on that one.

And what’s she up to these days when covid numbers are spiking in Alaska and numbers are higher than they’ve ever been, and people have been told not to gather? Hot tub parties with bloggers, apparently.

Credibility = 0

 

DAN SULLIVAN – HE’S FROM EVERYWHERE

Back in 2014 when Ohio Dan was running his first Senate race in Alaska, as accusations of being a carpetbagger were flying, it was noticed that even his mail wasn’t Alaskan. He put up some kind of generic hunting picture on his campaign website that keen eyes suspected was a random stock photo. It was. Of New Zealand. #Fail


 

This time, Dan Sullivan joins us from scenic Mount Shuksan in North Cascades National Park which keen observers will also note – is not in Alaska.

Ahhh… What Alaskan has looked at a stock photo of “Beautiful Mt. Shuksan Reflecting on Picture Lake” and not thought of home…

With all of Alaska’s stupendous scenery, Alaska Republicans apparently have to look 1,800 miles away to find a photo good enough for their man. You’ve got a few days left to make sure we get an actual Alaskan Senator – Dr. Al Gross. 

 

VOTE YOUR RIGHTS

And finally on a more serious note, since Dan Sullivan and his Republican cronies in DC rushed to vote Amy Coney Barrett on to the Supreme Court last week, it’s a good time to remind everyone what’s at stake. Donald Trump has said that he’d never nominate anyone to the bench who wasn’t completely “pro-life”. So what happens if Roe v. Wade is overturned by the high court because of Dan Sullivan, Lisa Murkowski, and the rest of the Republican Senate? The decision about abortion will be left to the states. Now, Alaska did legalize abortion before Roe v. Wade and we have a privacy clause in our constitution. BUT state legislatures are going to have an awful lot of power when it comes to whittling away at a woman’s right to choose in all kinds of ways.

That said, here’s an interesting email exchange between a voter and Republican candidate for HD24, Tom McKay (running against Democratic candidate Sue Levi). Read from the very bottom upwards. I transcribed it afterwards for easier reading.

VOTER (a doctor): How do you feel about 1sttrimester abortion, performed by an MD with either a single injection of methotrexate, or dispensation/prescription of oral medication? Feel free to call me at xxx-xxxx.

TOM McKAY: Well I really do not feel very good about those procedures to be honest.

VOTER: You are entitled to your beliefs. The question is: will you vote to make 1sttrimester abortion including non-surgical (i.e. medication only) illegal? … Assuming Roe vs Wade gets overturned, which looks possible at this point.

TOM McKAY: Then it’s up to each state

VOTER: You are avoiding the question like a typical politician

TOM McKAY: I did?? Thought I was pretty clear pro life would likely vote for the law you described

VOTER: Now you are getting close to being truthful in saying you will impose your moral-religious beliefs on others, who are attempting to exercise their rights of privacy, given the opportunity. Better plan on changing our state’s constitution

TOM McKAY: Ok thanks for the dialogue and you know what I do not go to church not really religious just right and wrong ya know

You might not think it, because the minority can be extremely loud, but Alaska is solidly pro-choice, with more than 60% in the camp that believes these extremely private decisions should be between a woman and her doctor – not between a woman and her government. Or between a woman and Tom McKay. His opponent in the race is Democrat, Sue Levi.

So all the above being said, vote wisely, vote blue, and vote NOW – from the top of your ballot, allllll the way down to the bottom. We also strongly recommend a Yes vote on Ballot Measure 1 and a yes vote on all judges.
