Open Thread – Perry Island

As I was flying across Prince William Sound on my way to the East Coast recently, I looked out the window and almost jumped out of my seat. There was a beautiful dawn-kissed 3-D version of a chart I’ve seen hundreds of times. The distinctively shaped island that in this picture looks a bit like an ‘M’ is Perry Island. I’ve been there in the summer, but never in the winter and it looked strange to see it all covered in snow. And the bay on the right has a teeny little inlet that you can’t even see on this picture…

Open Thread – Meteor Shower!

Here’s wishing you clear skies.  The annual Leonid meteor shower is headed this way and the best viewing will be two or three hours before dawn on November 17 and 18.  Actually it isn’t headed this way, we’re headed THAT way as Earth nears the place where the soon-to-be meteors have been patiently waiting. The Leonids have been responsible for some of the most intensely spectacular celestial events in history.  Every 33 or 34 years the showers are so intense, they are actually called “meteor storms” with hundreds, and sometimes thousands of meteors seen in an hour.
