Zephyr Teachout – The Anti-Fracking Candidate in New York

A while back, I had the opportunity to interview Democratic primary candidate for Governor of New York, Zephyr Teachout. She’s running against incumbent Governor Andrew Cuomo. Teachout has stood out as a progressive voice against Cuomo’s too-business-friendly, anti-environmental take on Democratic politics. She’s strongly anti-fracking, while Governor Cuomo supports test sites, and claims that the science isn’t in on the controversial method of resource extraction. Cuomo unfortunately refuses to debate her – even though she’s polling well enough to warrant recognition. In fact, he went so far as to ignore her at NYC’s Labor Day Parade. A Night At the Races – Memorial Night for Kevin Ward Jr. [Photos]

Both my cousin and my uncle have been racing for years. My cousin holds world records in micro racing. The ‘Reuter’ name [my family name on my mothers side] is known throughout racing circles in Upstate New York… but somehow I had never actually photographed a race. Last month when Kevin Ward Jr. was killed by Tony Stewart on the track at the Canandaigua Motorsports Park, a local raceway had a memorial night in his honor. I’d rather be covering the Alaska State Fair which is this week, but I’m stuck in Upstate New York. So, here are some photos from the New York State Fair. It was Governor’s Day at the fair, and unlike in Alaska where that might mean free hamburgers and salmon, in New York it means protests and Dinosaur BBQ.
