Welcome Mike!  glad to have you!  I am a transplanted-to-Kansas Houstonian... near SW part -- Meyerland/Westbury neighborhoods.  Hope you fared well after the hurricane... got a phone call from a friend who said her power came back on Thursday.  We talked a lot about ya'll around here... wondering why the media wasn't covering it more.  Still don't get it, but I turned hundreds on here at Mudflats to the live streaming broadcasts from KTRK, KHOU & KPRC.

Glad to have you with us.

Hi Deb, nice to hear from you and I can't wait to hear the story behind your name. I'm in Spring Branch but I'm familiar with the SW area. I came out fine in the storm. Power was off for a couple of days but a nice little cool front blew in the day after the storm. Not much damage in my area. Mostly trees and limbs down. There are others in the area that weren't so lucky but if you've been watching the local news you're already aware of that. Not to politicize the situation but FEMA has to be the most inept, disorganized agency in federal government. At least at management level. They did succeed in launching two new political stars though. One of them is actually a Democrat Wink
I lived in Kansas briefly, Rolla/Hutch area. Liked the people, not crazy about the scenery. Hoping maybe some of the Alaskans will chime in. I saw an interview with a lady named Shannyn Moore the other night. Very impressed. I can't think of any blogs in our area. Pink Lady in Austin is entertaining. I'm not a real political animal but I love tweaking the tails of the local cons at the Houston Chron. Come join in sometime. Look me up if you do. I'll be the one laughing at the hypocrisy Wink
Also wanted to say how sad I am at the death of Paul Newman, a hero of mine on many levels.
A sad loss for everyone whether they know it or not.
Thanks for the warm welcome and hope to talk to you again sometime.

Ugh Politicize FEMA's screw ups all you want!

We had a couple of FEMA history lessons on the Old Mudflats Site... I'll have to look them up... one of our numbers (can't remember who) had a lot to say about how/why FEMA is what it is ... the short end of it was (hope I get this right) that after Hurricane Andrew Cinton Admin reformulated FEMA making a cabinet level position... and brought in a person who had acutual experience in emergency management (imagine that).  This worked great for several years FEMA was below the radar... On 9/11, the Clinton apointee was still in place, and all emergency managing went well... then GeeDub reformulated FEMA, put it in to Homeland Security and made it a political plumb position... the rest, you surely know about since Houston took in over 300,000 of the Katrina victims.

The sucking sound you hear on most nights anywhere in America is FEMA... something needs to be done about them and sadly, because of all the other insanity over the last month, the Houston hurricane tragedy (I cried looking at Crystal Beach -- I can see where a good friend's house was and is no more) has fallen to the bottom of the news heap.

I hope Obama's people were paying attention and fix the problem once they're in office!

 Welcome

Hi Mike - y'all come back!  My son is getting ready to go down to Galveston to do some work rebuilding - I think he will enjoy Texas in the winter - escape from the snow and all.
