Hi from beautiful N. AZ.  We have no sand or palm trees - just mountains and snow.  We are an island of blue in a red state.

Hello from you southern neighbor of the desert!  Grin
I'm a Desert Dweller and also looking to turn AZ purple. Lots of people with brains here, you'd think that they were smarter about McCain.

Lucky you, no sand or palm trees!  I adore northern AZ and love that at least some of this insanely red state is blue!!

there is an article today from Salon about Arizona being red but maybe turning blue (at least at the local level) Will Arizona leave John McCain blue?

Quote
Which is why Don Bivens, the chairman of the Arizona Democratic Party, is feeling pretty good these days. "We're still going full steam ahead," he said last week. His only regret? "I wish I had some of the resources they're giving to New Mexico" for the presidential race. The presidential campaign is basically passing Arizona by, but even so, McCain was only up by 10 points in recent public polls; private polls for campaigns have Obama even closer in some congressional districts around the state. (Bivens says Obama's strategists in Chicago tell him they'll consider buying ads and spending some money in Arizona if it's still close after the debates.)

Quote
"I don't expect much coattails" for McCain, said pollster Bruce Merrill, a professor emeritus at the Arizona State University's Cronkite School of Journalism who runs a monthly survey for the school and a local TV station. "The presidential election is a personality contest rather than party-based. The issues at the state and local level are heavily in favor of Democrats."

The southern half of the state tends to be a bit more liberal anyway.  I think the margin will be far closer than I would have ever imagined.  I still think McCain will this state but I would agree that the local level will show a lovely shade of blue.  I'm working two voter reg events at the U 0f A in the next two weeks and also doing a couple of phone bank evenings.  When I called Dem headquarters in Tucson to find out about volunteer opportunities in the area for Obama I was told twice that 13,000 people had called in the last three weeks to volunteer for Obama.  Thats amazing if true!  (I'm thinking it's probably 1,300 but still...)

Hey Julie...  Northern AZ has some of our favorite hikes and nothing more relaxing than getting away midweek for a drive up north in the fall for checking out the changing colors in the mountains.  I think we're at about that window for the painting to start....  we're down in the "Valley", another warm one today.

And greets from the far northwest of the state as well.

Lots of Arizonans here, makes a Zonie proud.
