Hi Everybody!  I've posted on the blog a few times and lurk quite often.  Trying to stay sane.  I've been very encouraged by the amount of "liberal" mumblings I've heard in our uber-red state.  Thanks to AKMuckraker for giving us a port in this storm!

Hello fellow Kansan. I'm from Kansas City and have heard that Brownback is going to run for governor when Kathleen's term expires. That is very bad news because some knowledgable people think that he will be virtually impossible to beat. Sorry to wreck you night.

I just left Johnson County for northern Minnesota with my teenage son.  I love being in a very blue area of a blue state, but do miss the city, even if it's red.  I am trying to stay positive for my son, and make this new life work. (Yes, I left my husband...he left his dad...good move in the long run, just have to stay strong in the short run)

Hi de ho fellow people from the land the southern wind!

I've been frequenting this site ever since herself was nominated for VP back in late August but have never officially introduced myself.  I grew up in Topeka, lived in Wichita for eight long years (the REDDEST city in a very RED state...anyone remember the "Summer of Mercy"?), had a 13 year respite in Columbia, MO and moved back to Manhattan a couple of years ago.  (Hasn't changed a bit since I graduated 21 years ago! All the same houses still need painting and KSU is back to losing football games!  'Twas ever thus!)

Degrees in geophysics and accounting, was a CPA for 15 years (hated it!) and am now the bookkeeper for a large construction company here in town.  Recently divorced, two kids (19 and 21) and two dogs (a mutt I found in the grocery store parking lot and a blind golden retriever).

And that's my life in five concise sentences.  I'd like to see Sarah Palin do that!

Have a great Thanksgiving everyone!

Hey Jay,

We got "trapped" in Wichita a few years ago, driving home from my brother-in-law's funeral in OK City to Kansas City...the car broke down right outside of Wichita, and the dealer wasted one whole day trying to convince us to buy a new car.  The second day they fixed it...anyway, Wichita was weird.  We went to a rib place by the hotel and they tried to charge us for plastic forks.  Overall, Wichita tried to rob us blind, but we city slickers knew how to handle them.

Yeah Steph,

I always think of Wichita as a city trapped in the 1950's, but maybe that's being too charitable.  Maybe a "Deliverance" comparison is more appropriate.

It's also extremely clique-ish, especially if you didn't go to church (we didn't).  It took us a couple of years to make any local friends.  Luckily we knew people from college who already lived there.

I've still got friends down there and it sounds like things aren't going too well...when we lived there, if I recall correctly, Boeing employed about 22,000 people...I just read that they're down to 3,000 and getting ready to layoff 600 more.

One of my best friends from there is a staunch Republican and thinks Sarah Palin is just wonderful and people just don't like her because she's "attractive" and "down to earth".  He's a smart guy and I just can't figure it out...he was born and bred in Wichita so I think it must be some sort of natural instinct type of thing!  He owes me dinner for the election, but I've got to go down there to collect it.

Cheers!
Jay

PS.  If anyone's interested in a socio-political book illustrating how Kansas is a microcosm of what's been wrong with the counrty for the past 8 years I would highly recommend Thomas Frank's "What's the Matter with Kansas? How Conservatives Won the Heart of America"

Okay, this is just a test.  Since "S*r*h P*l*n" becomes "turkey giblets" and "c*ns*rv*t*v*s" become "fuddy duddies in ruts" I wanted to see what John McCain and Republicans turned into.

Hi from another Johnson County Kansan.  My mother-in-law lives in Wichita and she and her husband work at Boeing.  She actually works for them and he works for Spirit.  They are the ones that bought out part of Boeing for those that don't follow all of the corporate evil in the world.  I used to be able to brag that I had never been to Wichita.  That is no longer the case  LOL  Oh and I lived in Manhattan for about 7 years.  Wamego for 1, Holton for 1 1/2.  Trust me I know about red areas.  Johnson county is pretty much purple at this point....too much $$$ still to be completely blue.  But also way too many smart people to be completely red either Tongue

Glad to hear that there is an increasing number of us BLUES taking over in the rest of KS.  My brother-in-law is a very scary red and he makes me worry about the state sometimes Holy Sheep!

Whichferret, my sister and brother-in-something live in the KC suburbs and will be moving to Manhattan soon (where my sister lived for years before moving to KC). Their blue vote will move with them  Smiley

Cheers.

Hey now,

Didn't realize there were so many Kansas folk here...give a shout if you're ever in Manhattan and I'll buy you a beer!  I think my email is still showing on my posts...I've tried to turn it off but can't seem to get it to stick.

Well, I just got back from a nice dinner with my folks and now I've gotta go listen to Alice's Restaurant...it's my Thanksgiving tradition.

Happy Thanksgiving to all and to all a good night!

Yeah, Last Chance is still there.  So is Auntie Mae's and Kite's.  Mel's is still open but not where it used to be (at least 21 years ago!).  The Aggie Lou(nge) is still open.  I actually had breakfast there with the Budweiser Clydesdales in '84 or '85...we got rained out working construction and it used to be the only place open at 7am...we went in for a beer and they were doing a photo shoot with the horses.  The Cowboy (downtown) is gone now.

However, there's a microbrewery/restaurant on the west side of town now...the beer used to be good, but they can't keep up with the demand anymore and don't age it all...it's not too great now.

There's also another microbrewery (Tallgrass) in town that is really good, but they are not a bar or restaurant...they just make it.  Speaking of which, my son brought me a beer making kit last weekend I've got a batch of honey wheat fermenting right now...everything seems to be working like they said it would, but does anyone out there have any tips or suggestions?  I'd like to try double fermenting the next batch, but can't seem to find anything on it on the 'net.
