Hi, I hope I am doing this right.  I am from the North Olympic Peninsula in the state of Washington.  Greetings to all fellow mudpuppies, and especially those from my state.  I came to Mudflats motivated by my suspicion which turned to dislike which turned to terror of Sarah Palin.  I am a fairly new American (Dec. 2006) and am voting in my first federal election.  I love Mudflats and have been reading the postings for several weeks.  I will be exploring the Forum, too, over the next few days.  Thanks for having a place of sanity in this crazy political milieu.

Welcome!  The Olympic Peninsula is stunning, I hear.  (One day ...)

Congratulations on your citizenship and I am excited for you to exercise your voting rights in the upcoming election - your first presidential election!  How wonderful!

Thank you to all who responded.  I just returned from hand delivering my ballot and my husband's to the County Courthouse.  He is a native born American (unlike me) and a lifelong Democrat (again, unlike me).  We did not trust the USPS to deliver this really important vote.  I did get a thrill as I filled in the box next to Obama/Biden.  Yes, my first vote for President and I look forward to voting many more times in years to come.  I always voted in my home country (Canada) and will always vote now that I am an American.

hello elaine,

I hope you can tell me the area around the river mouth of the Quillayute still looks like it did 45 or so years ago,

Thanks to all who responded.  Yes, the Olympic Peninsula is a beautiful place.  Also seems to be very diverse in many ways including politics.  Cur-mud-geon, can't say about the Quillayute.  My river is the Elwha which has two dams on it but is being reclaimed over the next few years.  Those of you who have not visited the Olympic Peninsula, we would love to have you.  And those who haven't been here for a while, come on back!

Ah, yeah, the Quilliute isn't far from where the Elwha flows,  ..I remember people were trying to remove the dams some 40 years ago.

Have they actually removed any part of them yet?

Cur-mud-geon, I went to a candidate's forum where Norm Dicks, the longtime D from our district, stated that preliminary work has been done on the dam removal and that the plan is to remove the dams over the next few years.  We actually drive back and forth past the exit to the Quillieute Tribe but it has been many years since we have been there.  I can tell you that the Quinault River seems to be fine, though they did not have much of a salmon run this year, most likely due to ocean overfishing.  We do a lot of work for the Quinaults, most recently got over $1 million from the feds to build a fish plant at Queets.  Needless to say, they are ecstatic.  We also do a lot of work for the School District.

One of these days, elaine, if you haven't yet, you should go down to La Push, walk out on the beach on the north side of the river and then walk on up to Neah Bay.

Cur-mud-geon, I have been to both LaPush and Neah Bay but have never done the trek between.  I have talked to folks who have done that and really enjoyed it.  Have you been to the museum at Neah Bay?  Really world class.

Have you been to the museum at Neah Bay?

I'm sure I would enjoy it, but it didn't open until long after I'd gone elsewhere after having spent time in that part of the country.

Lot's of places down there I'd like to see again, ....you know how that goes, .....lots of places all over the world I'm hoping to see, some for the first time, some to see once more.

Take a few days and make that hike if you can.

Yes, my first vote was very exciting.  I am also pleased that as of Friday, my county already had a 25% return on their ballots.  Fingers very much crossed that most of them were Obama voters.
