I've personalized my avatar on the forum, but I can't see how to do it on the Mudflats blog. I want my own avatar, like Harley and Mad Skillz and suchanut and those guys. I saw a discussion of that a while back, but no way am I going to scroll through all those threads. Can someone help? Thank you!

Hello Wired,

You know you can send a private message to Harley and whoever, right?  Just do a search for whoever you want, pull up a comment from them, and look below their name when the comment is up and click on the symbol to IM them.

YOU COULD ALSO JUST READ HERE TO SEE  INSTRUCTIONS FROM Snoskred

To add an avatar from your own Hard Drive ( your computer )
go to
PROFILE ( located at the top left corner of Mudflats Forum )
Then on the left of the page click Forum Profile Information
then look to the right and select
I will upload my own picture: ( make sure no pic is selected in the drop down list )
then click the BROWSE radio button to locate the avatar picture you want from your computer.
When you have located your picture hit open and it will appear in the radio button area.
Now scroll down and select Change Profile.
Your done.
You can also add personalized text under your avatar BTW.

OR USE AN URL TO YOUR AVATAR AS DESCRIBED HERE BY Snoskred AS WELL.

NOTE: Hey New Forums Users ! Snoskred is busy preparing tutorials for all your questions I see.
When a new fora begins, it takes a little time to get all the guides up for everyone.
I certainly do not mind helping anyone out in the meantime, but Snoskred is doing a FANTASTIC job getting everything ready for you!
I will offer this suggestion for everyone who is new to forums.
When you have a question, try to look
HERE AT THE FORUM GUIDES FIRST
and see if it has already been answered for you. Often times it is.

Feel free to PM me with any questions that are not answered until SNOSKRED completes the guides.
I will help anyone if I can.
Mudflats rocks !

Sorry Harley.  I made the suggestion to Wired that he/she contact you directly based on all your chats with Proud2B on the blog about the avatars.   Given that everyone (well, I guess most of us) were still learning the site, I did not realize it was covered under the edit profile post . . . and neither did Wired.  Oftentimes, it takes awhile for us old dogs to learn new tricks.

Um, thanks for the instructions, but as you can see, I already know how to do it on the forum. I was asking how to do it on the blog. I am not finding the same ability to customize a profile there. And although I am indeed an old dog, I use computers a lot, so I'm pretty sure that if I am just pointed in the right direction I can do it. See, I have a photo already... thanks, anyway.

To get an avatar on the Mudflats blog, you'll need to sign up to Wordpress and get an account.  The blog is set to automatically generate those geometric quilty avatars.  I don't know if they translate to the forum though...

The avatars on the blog don't translate to the forum, unless you save the avatar to your hard drive, and then upload it to the forum as your avatar.

Great website for avatars...go to the avatar home page and search for any avatar subject you might want:   www.iconator.com  Just right click on any avatar and hit 'save picture as'...it'll go into your picture file and then go to your profile and upload it's location from your picture file....

AKM, Thank you! Mystery solved! I'll stick with my quilt pattern on the blog for the time being and use my 'wired' avatar here. I appreciate you taking the time to respond to this mundane matter.

You are handling your 15 minutes of fame (could turn into more) with great grace and aplomb. I don't know if you've even had time to process this, but you, YOU, are playing a role in changing Alaska politics forever, and perhaps American politics as well. Holy Shit! Best wishes and keep on truckin'.

Snos, Seph:  Have the settings for Avatars changed?  I tried to upload a .jpg I had used previously (from my hard drive) but got this error message:

Quote
The following errors occurred when trying to save your profile:

    * The avatar you have selected is too large, or not an avatar.

Then I tested to see if I could upload the one I'm currently using to see if it would accept the image, but still got the same error message.

Thanks!

There was a problem with the forum resizing images because people were uploading massive pictures, so we turned off the automatic resizing. Your image has to be 100x100 pixels or less. Wink

I love my quilt pattern; it's one of the first things I noticed about Mudflats.

An image has to be 100x100 pixels or less to be used as an Avatar.

If you have an image on your hard drive that you'd like to re-size (and don't have the software to do so), go to this website:

http://www.shrinkpictures.com/

All you have to do is upload your image, then select 100 pixels as the size you want.  Once the process is complete, save it on your hard drive again.

Hope that helps!

Icy Russian Palin, (or any of you kind people who have a moment)
You seem like someone that I can confide in given the prayer flags so I am going to out myself. I am within sneezing distance of 60. I actually have a blog and website that is completely unrelated to anything political or that would have any connection to this site.  All I do is post things and articles from other people interested in the same subject. I don't have any of this fancy stuff. I have no idea what an avatar is. I have no idea why people have all these weird names. I sort of think I know what a troll is but I'm not 100% sure and please, please explain to me what the H... LOL means. Thank you to anyone who has the compassion to respond.
Sincerely, Old 60's Hippie with the same political views who can read and spell but is technologically challenged.

Hi, southernbelle!

An avatar is a picture a user chooses to represent him or her on a website.  My representational picture shows protest signs.  Icy's shows prayer flags.

The weird names have evolved over time.  There's a Palin baby name generator where you can turn your actual name into a Palin name (mine is Rake Trinket).  As events have unfolded over the election season, some of us have added more to our user names - Hussein for Barack Obama's middle name and "That One" in response to McCain's gaffe during debate #2.

A troll is someone who goes to a site specifically to stir up trouble.

LOL = laughing out loud.  This acronym site might be helpful.

Hope that helps!  (HTH!)

Hey, Southernbelle!

I'll take a crack at a few things for you.  An avatar is a picture that represents a user (in my case it's my cat, Sitka P. Coldfoot).

There's a thread here where you can post a link to your blog (even if it's not poltical).

I was going to post more about trolls and LOLs, but Cindy beat me to it.  Cool
