New to politics.  VERY new.  As in "no-interest-what-so-ever" and "leave-the-room-if-the-topic-comes-up" for the first 43-1/2 years of my life.  (Lemme put it THIS way:  I had to take this test to find out that I'm not the conservative independent I've always considered myself to be, nope!  I, sir, am a hard-core Liberal!)  My 'world' was very small, consisting only of the people I care about, and extending only to those I've actually met.

As far as I was concerned, all politicians were possibly hard-working, but definitely smooth-talking spin-masters, skilled mostly at telling everybody what they most wanted to hear, may the best PR firm win....

Until, that is, one night in late August, when I happened to channel-surf to the RNC, just as Sarah Palin was introduced...

...and I found myself laughing, though she hadn't even said a single word.

My only thought at the time was probably something along the lines of, "Considering the supposed male-to-female ratio in AK, I'm not surprised SHE got elected Governor!" assuming I had even that much internal dialog going on.  I was amused at the sight of her, but not interested enough to actually hear what she had to say.  I probably switched to Animal Planet for the night....

The next day, though, I found myself bothered by my laughter.  I didn't know that woman, I didn't know anything about her at all... who was I to laugh?  Since I knew next to nothing about Alaska anyway, I got online and found the ADN website.  I looked for articles citing court documents or official reports, as well as Op Ed pieces and letters to the editor, hoping to find the balance point between the pro- and con-Palinites.  I began to form a picture, but it lacked cohesion.  Certainly, it didn't reflect my image of a woman suited to one of the highest offices in the US of A.

But I've never trusted the accuracy of newspapers, anyway.  It's a sad truth that flashy headlines increase sales. I wanted to know what REAL Alaskans thought of their legislature.

(Be vewwy, vewwy qwiet.... I'm huntin' bwoggers!  Heh-heh-heh-heh-heh!)

I found Mudflats early on, but I read any blog I could find.  I found it interesting that enough of the 'pro-Palin' sites seemed peopled by... I don't want to say 'stupid', but definitely less intelligent-seeming indivduals.  They all had their opinions, but so few of them seemed based on verifiable fact....

I returned to the 'flats more and more, and now I happily consider myself an honorary Mudpuppy!

I second that! Makes me think I should go back and edit my boring, just the facts, ma'am entry I did for myself!
