Please note before posting photos:

Photos are welcome in posts, but please post only photos you have a legal right to - generally those you own yourself, or those clearly in the public domain or registered though Creative Commons. Other photos (or if you're not certain if they're OK) should be left as URL links

In order to post images to the forum, first, they must be on the internet - you can't post images from your hard drive directly to the forum. It'd be nice, but if that were the case, there'd be a lot more security issues we'd have to deal with. Smiley

That being said, you also don't need to worry about having to pay so much a month/year/week to host your photos on your own server or website. There are a multitude of sites which allow you to post your own images on the web for free - and in the case of some sites, without even needing to register.

I put together a listing of some of them last year, and for the most part, that list is still valid. You can check that out here - http://www.sephyroth.net/2007/10/host-images-online-for-free-yes-you-can/

In the example here, I will be showing you how to get a picture posted onto the forum by using Imagehack. One thing that I recommend doing is resizing a picture (make a copy of the original before doing this, of course Smiley) so that it is smaller and easier to post on the web; it's not necessary, but it will help later on. Wink

If you choose to do that or not, here's how you go about getting your picture posted to the forum:

1. Go to Imageshack, or the site you use to host your pictures (webshots, photobucket, flickr, etc.) and find the upload function; generally, it is found on the front page, as it is on Imageshack -

2. Use the Browse function to find the photo you want to post on your computer; in my case, I am going to find a picture of a football player named R. Hymes (off of a picture from the NFL Network, back before they had a fit over cable companies airing it on digital cable only...)

3. Check the options you want to have, such as resizing the picture, a bar on a thumbnail telling viewers how big the picture is, and whether or not you want to view the latest and greatest jobs from Hotjobs. Afterwards, click "host it!".

4. After the image has been uploaded, you will be taken to a screen where you should see your image, with a whole bunch of codes for websites, as seen here -

4a. The best way to post something to the forums is to take the link under Link Codes marked as Forum. You should also uncheck the "Include details" box, otherwise, your post will unintentionally on your behalf have an advertisement in it from Imageshack. In other words the code you copy should look like this -

Code:
[URL=http://imageshack.us][IMG]http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/5236/rhymesdi4.jpg[/IMG][/URL]

5. Head back to the forum, and then reply to the thread you wanted to have your picture in. In the post editor, paste the code for the picture you want to post in the thread.

5a. If the site that your picture is hosted on does not have an auto-generated link for forums, you will need to manually get an address for your photo and copy that. In general, sites you will need to get the direct address for an image are flickr, or if you have the image hosted on your own server space.

When you get to the forum, you will have to use the Insert Image button, found on the second row of posting buttons, immediately above the row of smileys.

Click on that button, and then paste the link you copied earlier between the image tags which appear; the cursor will automatically insert itself in the right place for you to paste it in right away.

Please note though that we do have a guideline that images should be less than 600 pixels wide; if you have an image that is too wide, and you are uncomfortable with editing your own photos, you can always do the following to the image code for the forum, in order to make it fit:

Code:
[img width=600]*ADDRESS OF PICTURE*[/img]

If you have any questions about it, or still need more help, feel free to ask. Smiley

I am playing around the 'how to' part of the forum and want to try creating an avatar- I use a mac and iphoto. Following directions and advice from others, I should be able to do this. 100 x 100 pixel size is needed. But my photos are bigger- can they be resized somewhere? Here, there, anywhere?  (or do I need a really little camera?)  Grin

Here's one place you can do it online - there are probably countless others, and there may be software on your Mac that can do it, but I don't know anything about them, so am clueless there...

Iphoto will do it for you. When you have chosen a photo in iphoto, made it square (if you want) - choose "export" from the "file" menu on the top. It will cue you to chose either as-is ("full-size image"), or whatever size. Choose "scale images no larger than" and fill in 100 X 100. Then export the avatar to your desktop or other chosen location, where you can find it when you're looking for it.

Let me know if you have trouble. I'm Mac Friendly.

OK, Larry, the site you gave is great- it works right up to the point where I try to change my profile. But it doesn't change it.
Aero, your idea works to a point, but I can't find where I enter the size I want. Does jpg or tif have anything to do with size?  Did I tell you I'm a little computer challenged?  Grin
Thanks for the help by the way, I'll keep working on it...

Boodog, just to be sure, after it shrank it, you did save the smaller picture to your computer, using their instructions, and were then able to find the smaller version on your computer afterwards? Their process creates a weird filename -sort of a juble of upper and lower case letters.

Then I assume it was in the profile part of The Mudflats Forum that you were making your changes, so there you found and selected this new file with the jumbled name?

Did you find the File menu: Export option?  It should bring up a smallish window titled "Export Photos." File Export should be highlighted of the three tabs of this smaller window (on the top). Then, on the left side of the window are options about size: either "full-size images" or Scale images no larger than:" - you select one or the other, in this case scale images to no larger than (fill in:) 100 X 100.

Jpg and tif are two formats for photo files, and don't directly affect file size.

Larry, yes, I downloaded the image to my computer- both in documents and desktop- and tried it  directly from their file. Everything looked good till I put in the file (in my profile) where it says 'choose file'. Then as I go down to hit the button to complete changes, nothing. Goes back to the original avatar. There has to be something I'm not doing right (duh) but I can't figure out what it is! This is not an important issue, but now it has become an obsession for me to figure it out!!

OK, I get the window with EXPORT, but nothing on the side for size- just jpg size. Small medium, etc. Maybe my version is outdated?

Jeez, seems like I've been using (and updating versions of) iphoto for a long while now and not seen that set of options (except when exporting directly to email), but what version are you using? (when in iphoto, select "about iphoto" from iphoto in the menu right next to the apple on the main menu). I'm still running 6, too cheap to get '09!
