If you have Graphic Converter, that will give you a really small JPEG size that will be accepted by the upload process.

I did it. I finally put up an avatar. I just looked and saw that my first post was back in September 2008 and it only took me about a year and a half to get around to doing it.
(does that mean I win at procrastination?)
