This thread is for the discussion of our first movie club. We're watching Chocolat as mentioned in this thread.

So, for those who have now watched the movie, what did you think of it?

A few questions to get the discussion started -

What did you most like/dislike about the movie?

Who was your favourite character? Least favourite?

What was your favourite scene? Least favourite?

Did you feel hungry for chocolate at the end of it? And if so, what kind did you eat? Wink

(btw, we spell favourite with a U in Australia, just FYI.)

Before I jump into any of these questions, I want to ask - is the Johnny Depp character supposed to be Irish? His accent did not sound the least bit French to me.

I read the book years ago and don't remember if that character was French or not. It just struck me as odd since I think Johnny Depp is a good enough actor to pull off a french accent. But to my ears, that was Irish.

In the book the character of Roux is a gypsy from Marseilles, but in the movie Roux is a wandering Irishman traveling with the river gypsies.

I liked everything about this movie - but mostly I liked the idea of chocolate magic.  My Colombiano roots are steeped in coffee and chocolate. They run in my veins.

My favorite character is Dame Judi Dench as the grandmother who wants to see her grandson. Least favorite is the brilliantly played village Mayor, the perfect bad guy.

My favorite scene is when the chocolatiere Vianne gives the chocolate to the abused housewife, and the changes in her life begin.  Though a close second is when the mayor succumbs to the window display and has his orgy of gorging.

I did feel hungry for chocolate throughout the movie. I was most curious about adding cayenne pepper to hot chocolate, so I tried it, and it was wonderful.

From Flora Thompson's "Lark Rise to Candleford" "A little later, remembering man's earthly origin, "dust thou art and to dust thou shalt return," they liked to fancy themselves bubbles of earth. When alone in the fields, with no one to see them, they would hop, skip, and jump, touching the ground as lightly as possible... and crying, "We are bubbles of earth! Bubbles of earth! Bubbles of Earth!" "
