Thanks for posting this,  Morph.  A great idea.

Another thoughtful, inexpensive way to say you care is to send a mug with some cocoa packets in it and a short note.   Flag

These guys are just plain happy to get anything from home.  To know that they are remembered and cared for.  Any useful items will do too.  Stuff we all take for granted when we shower every morning, like deodorants, powder, shaving items.  Medicine chest items like sunblock, chap stick, sunburn care, band-aids, etc. Then there are the down time items we all love like snacks, cookies, candies, popcorn, etc.  Books of any kind.  Calling cards.  Stationary, stamps and pens/pencils.

There are dozens of items we use throughout our day that they sorely miss.  Send anything and it will be appreciated greatly.

(hats and mittens when it's 100F is probably not really needed...LOL)

I went to the Red Cross website and found that cards you send have to be postmarked by Dec. 10! That means you still have today and tomorrow to send your cards to

Holiday Mail for Heroes

Quote
Holiday Mail for Heroes is a partnership between the American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes to deliver one million holiday cards to American service members, veterans and their families in the United States and around the world. Please send cards to this address, following the guidelines listed below:

Holiday Mail for Heroes
PO Box 5456
Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456

You can also:

    * Download and print a free card.
    * Learn about other ways to participate.
    * Get the latest news about Holiday Mail for Heroes.
    * Watch a video from Red Cross Celebrity Cabinet Members Dr. Phil and Nancy O'Dell.

Please follow these simple guidelines when sending your card to ensure it will quickly reach service members, veterans and their families.

    * All cards must be postmarked no later than Wednesday, December 10, 2008. Cards postmarked after this date will be returned to sender.
    * If sending more than one card, please mail all cards together in one large shipping envelope. Cards sent in this manner do not need individual envelopes or postage.
    * Please ensure that all cards are signed.
    * Please use generic salutations such as “Dear Service Member.”
    * Please do not include personal information, like email or home addresses.
    * Please do not send letters.
    * Please do not include inserts of any kind, including photos, glitter, confetti, gift cards or calling cards. Any items inserted into cards will be removed during the reviewing process.
There is much more information at the website. I especially like the second point, about sending many cards together in one large envelope.
Flag So...(drumroll)... I hereby issue a Mudflats challenge! I challenge you (and myself) to send several cards TODAY to the Red Cross! I'll report back as soon as I've done it!

I sent my package of cards this morning. Did it in memory of my dear mother-in-law, who was the most thoughtful person when it came to sending cards to people.  Smiley

I used this one, as I don't think we don't have the Red Cross program here. Thanks for the link!

I sent one of these too. I clicked on 'see all available art' and found a beautiful card by 'Emily' that says 'HOPE' - that's the one I chose to send.  Cool

What a coincidence. That one's proving quite popular. Wink
