Hello from the corn fields of Illinois

I keep finding links to the Mudflats website on other blogs and I just read Doug's great story posted elsewhere. I'm not much of a joiner, but I like the commentary and the intelligent discourse here, so I wanted to join in. I've always been political, but this election really has me fired up! I'm originally from the great Pacific Northwest, but currently live in central Illinois. I've been an Obama supporter since he first showed up on the scene. I've had enough of the bottom-of-the-class, shoot-from-the-hip types. Even my husband, who has always voted Republican, is voting for Obama. We are certainly ready for a change and McCain is not it! Thanks for this forum; it has helped restore my hopes for a better future. BTW, my mother killed squirrels for money back in the Depression AND served overseas as an Army nurse during WWII. Can she be Secretary of State?.

I (we) look forword to you joining in. Yes under the Palin rules I think your mom could definantly be secretary of state.

I live in Galesburg. Are you familiar with it? My sister-in-law drove a school bus in Sycamore while at NIU. Are you in Mississippi or in Alaska?

Hello Illinois........Your mom has a great resume, but probably wouldn't qualify to run on McCain's ticket. His handlers were looking for an experienced liar who isn't afraid to abuse the power of office.

Darn, my mom was worried about her social security and was looking to supplement her income. Guess that's out. To the unfamiliar, Galesburg hosted one of the Lincoln-Douglas debates, was a stop on the Underground Railroad and is home of Knox College and the former Maytag plant that got outsourced to Mexico. Obama was a recent Commencement speaker at Knox, as was Bill Clinton, Steven Colbert and this year, Madeline Albright. Galesburg rocks!

Thanks for all the nice feedback. I'm heading out to Oregon on Monday with my youngest son so will be absent for awhile, I suspect. I will check back here when I'm wired again. Keep the faith!

Welcome Joplin! I know Galesburg and corn fields too! My husband & I are originally from Springfield, IL, then we lived in Orlando and now we're in the Pacific Northwest (near Seattle). We love it here, but miss family & friends in IL. Have a good trip to Oregon. See you back here soon!

Hello Illinois,
I don't think the position of Secretary of State would be available to your mom. However, given her military background and obvious familiarly with weapon systems I would think she is more than qualified to be Secretary of Defense in the McCain administration. Of course, most importantly can she call herself a maverick convincingly.

Hey Joplin - my son went to Monmouth - so spent four years either staying in or passing through Galesburg. You know hard economic times there with Maytag closing. So I hope there are more Obama supporters there!

I used to live in Springfield and my mother (a dyed in the wool Republican, I'm sorry to say) lives in Quincy. I couldn't stand the weather and moved north.
