hello fellow mudflat fans
just another "bitter" pennsylvanian looking for change.
living in downtown lancaster, a relatively cosmopolitan burgh compared to our strait-laced pennsylvania dutch protestant conservative lancaster county which votes overwhelming repub. the city is back in the hands of our dem mayor rick gray and a dem city council.
we've been lucky to see mr obama two times this year, once right before the pa primary at the amtrak station and again on the afternoon of mc cain's acceptance speech at buchanan park near franklin and marshall college. that event drew 15000. me and my boss, a good friend with cp who uses a wheelchair had great spots in direct view of the podium and mr. obama (and sen casey) at both events. both events seemed extremely well planned and managed and very very friendly, especially to folks with special needs and the elderly in attendance.
i've noticed the downtown has been flooded for the last week or so with an army of paid folks doing voter registration. i've been asked at least a dozen times this week if i was registered and was glad to be asked everytime. at my favorite downtown coffee shop (organic and free trade home-roasted coffee!) i talked to one of the workers who sketched in some info: they were being paid 8 bucks an hour for a five hour shift, not by the dems by by another group with "progressive" in the name. he had signed up 8 folks, six dems and 2 repubs. he bemoaned the repub signups figuring only a plus four advantage as his day's haul. he offered that they don't throw away the repub registrations. he also said the most-heard objection to on-the-spot registration was "i don't have the time". i asked if they offer info where folks could register online at their leisure, he said no but he thought it might work if they preprinted cards with that info to hand out to remove at least one excuse for not registering to vote.
a special thanks to engine in lancaster for pointing me in the right direction...

Saw an add in help wanted for paid workers to register people.

Back in April before the primary I has an Obama volunteer knock on my door.  She was a nice retired lady who had come up from Baltimore.

Welcome from another Pennsylvanian too (Pittsburgh). I think one of the National Veterans For Peace Conventions was held in Lancaster in the 1991 I think. I was there and walked around the "downtown" area. Lovely. VFP was started in 1986. It is is pretty big now and works closely with IVAW and MFSO. Glad you are here thanks to Engine giving to the tip about Mudflats!

 Welcome

Hey Falter Locust,

I was a student at F&M in the mid-70's and have fond memories of Lancaster.  I'm sure it's changed a lot since then - downtown was just starting to get "gentrified" when I graduated.  There was a wonderful hippy-ish restaurant we liked to patronize that used to serve frozen Milky Ways for dessert - awesome.  I can't recall the name, unfortunately.

I remember Lancaster being very Republican when I was there - glad to hear they're starting to "see the light"!! Cheesy
