I remember the 80s and the effects of Reagan-nomics on the economy.  Hundreds, even thousands would show up for every job posting in the paper.  Job fairs would become overwhelmed with job seekers early into the day.

More than 10,000 people showed up Thursday for the event at Southern New Hampshire University's athletic complex in Manchester. The job fair had been heavily promoted on television, but organizers expected just 5,000 participants.

Northeast Ohioans overwhelm job fair
Northeast Ohio's tough economic times were reflected at a job fair near Cleveland today. More than 1000 people had to be turned away for safety reasons.

It is just crazy out there.

It is very bad all over yet you don't hear much about it on the news. I keep track of the unemployment rate for this county, it stood at 12.5% as of April 1st ths is up 1% over the month before.

Perhaps the most worrisome is how they count. We began to expierence large job loss around this time last year there is a really good possibility these people are no longer being counted.

Perhaps the most worrisome is how they count. ...

The figures only include people who can currently receive unemployment comp.  The figure provided by the government can safely be doubled to understand the true unemployment rate.

Not included: 1) people who were sole proprietors, 2) people solely on commission, 3) people considered to be independent contractors, rather than employees (a comman practice in corporations to avoid benefits and unemployment comp), 4) people who quit as businesses were failing or were driven out, 5) people fired "for cause", 6) people who didn't accept lesser postions far from their homes, 7) people now working far below old skill and income levels, 8) people who no longer are actively employment, 9) a bunch of other people I don't recall at the moment.

Corporations understand how to manipulate these figures.  They change job requirements so they can fire "for cause" or simply drive employees crazy so they quit.  They offer positions hundreds, even thousands, of miles from home, with lower status and salaries, so that unemployment comp isn't available when the employee quits instead.

A better gauge of unemployment would be a randomized telephone poll or door to door survey.  The US is at over 15% unemployment nationwide by realistic statistics not based on unemployment comp.

It is interesting how the government and companies can/do manipulate the figures so that the unemployment rate never actually reflects the true numbers.  I have watched over the last few months alone 600K+ figures of jobs lost each month, then looked at the population figures.  There is no possible way that the unemployment rate is as low as the government says.  We would have to more than double the census figures for that to be true.

I think part of the reason they under report so drastically is to avoid panic in the economy.

Of course Monkey man (2 yrs old) has his own theory.  It is all about the Capt. Crunch creatures.  Tinfoil Hat  I'm not exactly sure what that is all about, but he's pretty sure that's what it is.   Then again he's pretty concerned about the crying smiley icon and feels it needs a hug and a Christmas tree and some happy birthday gifts.  Wink
