As you say, this is alarming - talk about an unholy alliance between the police and church.
Quote
Police reports were not filed about the mail and photos, Blount said. The Sept. 29 police report launching the investigation quotes Blount telling police only about “an ongoing Internet incident that has possible criminal overtones.”
It stinks.

How frighteningly uncomfortable. First we have unhappy politicians, now churches? What next, the babysitter?

It is scary, these are some very paranoid people.
The detective admitted that there hadn't been anything criminal with any of these blogs, yet persisted in using his professional office to get information on them.
That he did this about blogs from more than one state (Tennessee and Florida), seems to me that he might have been acting at the request of the pastor on behalf of the Southern Baptist Convention.
This is a huge organization, over 16 million members and 42,000 churches in the U.S.

To me this feels like a very dangerous mix of church and state.
As there was NO criminal activity, no one at the church should have been informed of anything. If there were criminal activity, then the DA should be informed, not the church.

from that article it sounds as though this particular pastor has a history of being a major jerk. not a good quality for a religious leader.

This is what happens when right-wing ministers get used to having the Government on their sides.

Thanks for that link. The comments from The Story of the Watchdog Blog - Part 1, are really interesting.
It is disturbing that a church pastor would act like this and even more disturbing that others members of the
church went along with it and actively participated in this type of behavior, even to the point of changing
church bylaws to protect themselves.
A bit of megalomania goes a long way when you have a position of power.
