I still keep seeing Ellis out of the corner of my vision.  Cry

As for Glory, she's doing great. I've spent all day being pack Alpha female and nipping potential dog fights in the bud.

One HUGE breakthrough was this evening when I caught Glory starting to pee in the kitchen...I made my Alpha noise and she stopped immediately, DH grabbed the leash and took her outside, where she peed buckets.

About ten minutes later, Glory got up and walked straight to the door...I took her out and she pooped outside instead of inside. YAY!!!!!  Party!

I'm sure I'll wake up in the morning to an overnight disaster, but tonight was a great success in house-training.

Of course you do.  Because the love lasts.  Far after the body is gone.

I was reminded recently that it has been some time since I've posted any tales from the poultry here. Well, winter in Maine is pretty dull if you're a duck or a chicken. Mine get locked up in protective custody in their (rather lavish) shed in the dead of winter, because snow is too good an insulator for the perimeter electric fence to protect them from everything that wants to eat them in their outside pen. Food, water, hay, that's about what their world is, although the steep south-facing roof of their shed is clear, so they get lovely sunshine.

I was able to let them back out into their pen lately, with the recession of the snowpack (this is NOT normal for this time of year!). A bit better, but still pretty dull.

Now, some of you may remember that I like to joke that if chickens were put on this earth to make sheep look smart, ducks return the favor to the chickens in spades. That said, today midmorning I was looking out over the nearly clear yard thinking, if it were spring, I could let the birds out -- wouldn't they be happy to play in all the water!

Thwack!    That was the sound of me smacking the front of my head. Yes it's February, but the pen gate is all clear of snow, so out they go, to play for the daytime!  The chickens immediately hopped out and started pecking, but the ducks -- oh nooo! open doooor!  I finally had to go in and chase them out. They were reluctant at first (some of them are about to turn 11, so they've only seen this phenomenon for 10 springs now!) but finally they headed out into the dirt, mud, and water.

Here are happy ducks, having their first bath in several months!

Hi everybody, I'm back (sorta)...................... Smiley

Haven't been doing much except take care of the kitties.  I got laid off after only 6 months (the facility on Ft. Wainwright closed)......... so once again this oldster is trying to convince employers that I'm really not too old to work.......

But for this thread, it's happy time! I've got to brush up on how to post a photo or 2 since I've added a kitteh to the thundering herd.  Patches makes 7 of the furry butts, and she has quite a "tail" to tell.  So when I can figure out how to post her pretty picture, I'll spill all the gossip of how she arrived with us!

Party! Party! I MISSED YOU ALL!!

Wow, Aero! Those ducks look happy, and I'd forgotten what ground looks like without two or three feet of snow on top of it! Now I'm really longing for spring.

Welcome back, northofdenali.  Looking forward to the pic and the story.  Smiley

Hubby's thumb drive died, so no pic - but here's the little (VERY, 5 pound little) kitty's tail:

A lovely tortie appeared in my back yard in mid-September 2009.  Now, that's not easy to do.  I have a Cat-Fencin system that prevents my kitties from roaming (on top of a 6-foot wood privacy fence), two LOCKED gates that no one ever leaves unlocked.... so unless she was tossed OVER the fence, there's no way she could get in.  Not one escape from my yard, ever, and no one has ever breached this "security"!

Scared little one, very scared.  It was getting pretty cold at night, here in Interior Alaska, and she was taking shelter under our shed (dirt, fairly warm).  She would not approach the house.  We also have a small greenhouse, and began leaving food and water outdoors for her after she'd been there a few days.  We also kept our kitties in, and opened the gates, thinking she'd go "home".  Wrong.  There is straw in the greenhouse.  She burrowed.

After a week, I called Animal Control to see if we could borrow a "live trap".  Sure we could, for $85, nonrefundable.  I called Pet Pride here in Fairbanks, and arranged to borrow, free, a live trap.

It worked.

We took her in, took her to the vet a week later.

SHE IS DAMN NEAR 15 YEARS OLD AND DECLAWED.

Who would do this?  Who would abandon an elderly DECLAWED (which should be outlawed, period) kitty?

Doesn't matter, now.  she's home, loved and will stay here until she passes over the rainbow.

Awww, northofdenali, how wonderful of you and your family to give this sweetheart a home.  We'll be looking forward to pictures of her eventually and btw, welcome back. Smiley

Aero, love the ducks.  Spring must be on the way when we have duck pictures to look forward to once again.  Yipeee!

Justa - how is Glory doing?  Hope all is well.

she had a six-foot running span BEFORE the amputation...I don't think she's lost more than a couple inches so far.
