The Poker Club is going to donate through the Alaska Community Foundation because it is tax deductible for the donation and because they can specify the community they want to donate to.  (No religious affiliation).

Good news for flooded villages:  Fort Greely furniture heads to flooded villages

Quote
FAIRBANKS — One soldier’s suggestion that the U.S. Army could help devastated Yukon River communities resulted in enough donated furniture to fill a couple of warehouses.

Now, volunteers are working through the logistical knot of hauling couches and beds, washers, dryers and tables from Fort Greely to Fairbanks, then to villages on and off the road system before winter closes transportation routes.

Communities from Eagle to the Lower Yukon suffered heavy damage this spring as ice jams drove flooding. Dozens of homes were extensively damaged, and several were destroyed.

And while volunteers are rebuilding structures, the Fort Greely garrison figured a way past red tape, donating enough furniture to outfit 40 homes from a supply of gently-used pieces destined for military sale, garrison spokesman Kent Cummins confirmed.

YEAH! Fort Greely - I hope we can find the name of that soldier, he is a hero. That is amazing, considering the military seems to be held together with red tape at times like this.

Fabulous news. Smiley

The army has a lot of trucks, what they need is a commander from a transportation company who will release some from their motor pool to haul the furniture, provided that the communities have a central location (warehouse or something) that they can deliver it to.   I say a central because if you start to dot it around to different locations for storage, then you'll end up with say 10 couches in one place and 10 washing machines in another, when what you really needed was 5 of each for every location.  It won't go onto the trucks like that unless you have someone at Ft. Greely to coordinate for location storage.

I bet this soldier can figure out the logistics if he has community contacts to work with.

I haven't checked in a bit, but it sounds like the Mennonites are finishing up their part and heading home.  There was an update Aug 21st that was interesting reading of the progress:

Hope just delivered my report to AKM via jump drive.  Hopefully she will be able to get my report to everyone soon.  Haven't heard from YBG lately.  I'm off to PM her now.

Here is an update according to the Anchorage Daily News:

Flood-damaged Eagle declared ready for winter

Quote
With the completion of 13 new homes in Eagle, which was inundated by an ice-jam-caused Yukon River flood in May, everyone who was left homeless has a place to live for winter.

Is there any report from the ground?

Thanks for the reminder, Jamie. I've had money sitting here that we collected at the 2009 Pittsburgh Mudstock. Things got so crazy right after it, but I've taken care of it now. I'm sure there's still a need.
