I do so need to actually start working..... however since I've finally joined the forums and even posted on the blog (losing my longtime lurker status), I guess it's also time to introduce myself.

I'm Kim, marine ecologist in Anchorage, former Peace Corps volunteer in Fiji.  I have two wonderful little girls (3 & 5) and am in the middle of a looooong sloooooooow separation.  This very weekend I get to move into my new digs downtown!  I spend lots of time out in wilderness AK for work and am anxious to introduce my daughters to my other life.  Almost all my family (5 siblings, 20 nieces/nephews, parents, 40+ first cousins, etc) is back east, primarily northwest PA.  I'm headed there myself at the end of June.  I have a large black & white cat named Spike, although friends who know him call him Fluffy.  He's a great snow cat.

Aside from family and friends, my favorite things in life are:  good chocolate and (depending on the time of day) good coffee/a glass of port; snuggling in a tent reading through a storm; being out in the rain; baking; reading, reading, reading.

I'm looking forward to browsing the forums and making some Mudflat friends.

 Welcome Kimkak.  What a lovely introduction.  Sounds you have a lot to share with your fellow mudpuppies. Great!  Grin

What every cat owner knows - deep down inside.......
Quote
<snip>
In other words, we didn't domesticate cats, they domesticated themselves. The animal was not tamed by the human, it looked the human up and down, liked what it saw and decided it would put on its cutest expression and pretend to be friends – a small price to pay for a high-mouse diet.

Cat owners reading, this, perhaps with Tango or Whiskey (or both) sitting nonchalantly on top of their paper, may not be overly surprised to learn of these zoological developments. Unlike obliging, loving, slavering dogs, cats can often give the distinct impression of only being in it for the tuna-flavoured biscuits. The fact that this might be a habit established over millennia only proves the consistency of their interests.

Anyone who has ever owned a cat and a dog know without doubt that;
Dogs have owners
Cats have staff

 LOL

No one can give that disdainful, you can be so replaced look like a cat can!

Hello and Welcome!  Welcome

I read your post to EyesWideOpen, too. Maybe we'll get to meet at Pittsburgh Mudstock III.

I love Anchorage, too. I've been up there several times.

Andrea, are you in Pittsburgh?  I'll be passing through on my way to & from Erie.  My parents are actually visiting right now, helping me move to a new place.  I'm at work and they're painting, fixing, cleaning, etc all day.  I'm trying to get them to go to Homer for a vacation!  --Kim

I'll send you a PM later. Homer is lovely, but can be really busy at this time of the year. We were there right before Memorial Day one year, and it was a nice quiet little town. We left, as planned, on the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend. It was a zoo! But no doubt it's a lovely trip.
