And the same people who maintain the killer was right to murder Dr. Tiller, would condemn Haitians to suffer unaided because they are poor and black. If Karma and reincarnation are in fact true, let us all pray that these self-righteous bigots are reincarnated as black, poor and PREGNANT! I particularly like to imagine Rush Limbaugh as one of the aforementioned.

Reminded me of a cartoon from the New Yorker Rejection Collection book of cartoons that did not make it into the magazine:

Black and a girl?

I guess in Kansas it's soon going to be ok to plan a murder and carry it out:

Quote
But what had been expected to be a simple trial was altered when Wilbert refused to bar Roeder's lawyers from building a defense case calling for a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter because Roeder sincerely believed the killing would save unborn children.

A conviction for voluntary manslaughter could bring a prison sentence closer to five years, instead of a life term for first-degree murder.

If this is allowed then where do you draw the line?  I mean premeditated murder is premeditated murder, right?

The problem becomes you can't draw the line.  There is no line.  If you can justify this, you can justify any act of murder anywhere, anytime for any reason.

To my mind, this is inexcusable and an obvious twisting of logic and law.

My stomach rolled over when I read this from the link above:
Quote
As the session began, the judge warned those in attendance not to cause any outbursts or distractions. During the session, one woman was admonished when she reacted with glee when a photo of Tiller’s body was shown to jurors.[emphasis mine]

What is it with these people?  If they believe killing is wrong (which they don't, obviously, but that's what they SAY) then maybe reacting with glee at the death of another is just a wee bit inconsistent.

These people are sick in the head.  I just can't understand what goes on in their twisted little minds that would justify killing a good doctor or anyone else.

Obviously they have never actually read their own holy book.

I hope those folks in Kansas think about the far-ranging implications of "voluntary manslaughter" being justification for cold-blooded murder.

Jihad terrorism comes to mind.

 Huh?

I wonder if the judge could possibly be setting the stage for the defense to trot out all they have, and then say "nope, not enough here for me to instruct the jury to consider voluntary manslaughter," just to quell the potential use of this defense in any future trials.

I hear the judge is pro-life, but still, could it be he's forcing the point, to smash it to bits at the end of the trial?  Voluntary manslaughter is NOT a good charge for the type of crime involved, so it's hard to see a judge instructing the jury to consider it.

NO manslaughter charges to be considered in Tiller killing!!!!   YAY!

Roeder jury can't consider manslaughter in Tiller killing
Quote
In a blow to the defense, the judge in Scott Roeder’s murder trial ruled Thursday that jurors will not be allowed to consider the less serious charge of voluntary manslaughter.

Closing arguments begin tomorrow, then it goes to the jury for the charge of premeditated, first degree murder.

Manslaughter charges being allowed would have been a disaster on many levels.  There is, I think, less chance of appeal since it was considered and then denied based upon evidence.

His supporters must have been very unhappy with that ruling.  Personally I'm hoping he gets convicted of the most serious of murder charges (they often times have a selection, I'm glad Man was taken off) and receives the maximum of sentences allowable.  Live without possibility of parole would be good.  Hopefully that would give anyone desirous of following his example a second thought about the seriousness of this type of crime.

Scott Roeder convicted of the murder of Dr. George Tiller

Quote
(CNN) -- A Kansas jury deliberated just 40 minutes before convicting a man who said he killed to stop abortions guilty of first-degree murder.

The jury found Scott Roeder, 51, guilty of gunning down Dr. George Tiller, who operated a clinic in Wichita where late-term abortions were performed. Roeder, 51, faces life in prison when he is sentenced on March 9.

[posted at the CNN site at 12:16pm EST]

Thank goodness.  Here's hopin' this sends every kind of message necessary to stop the violence against abortion providers and supporters.  Probably too much to hope for, but it's definitely a positive for those who seek protection and justice for abortion providers.

The state is asking for a "hard 50" as a sentencing.  Murder 1 is a mandatory 25 years.  A hard 50 doubles the 25 and makes possibility for parole void.  I think I like that in this case.

What a relief to wake up to this news in Hawaii!  I was very worried about jury nullification or a hung jury because of one holdout.  Whew!  We can expect an appeal, but I doubt it could be successful.
