I don't really think the conviction will stop anyone else, though. One man who killed a doctor in Florida was executed and it didn't stop this one.

Scary and unspeakably horrific. 

Roeder testified that he considered elaborate schemes to stop the doctor, including chopping off his hands, crashing a car into him or sneaking into his home to kill him.

But in the end, Roeder told jurors, the easiest way was to walk into Tiller's church, put a gun to the man's forehead and pull the trigger.

I'm glad that chapter is over.  Let his appeals be denied and may he spend the rest of his life in jail.  Hopefully without contact with the outside world that supports his actions.

I just dont get it...I really dont...I really would like someday to have a conversation with someone who could "explain" to me ..how the life of a fetus is more important than a life of a breathing person...

this is funny...but miss sarah articulated why I am so PRO CHOICE when she described thinking of...well I am out of town no one would know...thoughts... then she goes on to say she was "saved" from by remembering the prolifers...some nonsense like that...if a person with all kinds of support from family and friends, who is married, who has a loving husband, who has tons of money to help care for the child while she continues her career, who has lots of $$ to care for a child who she knows will have many challenges, etc...can still ...if only for a second or so...think about...CHOICE...how dare her/or anyone else deny that to any other woman????

I must admit, I am very scared sometimes.  I am scared by things that happen, like the lies to commit war on Iraq.  That horror.  The loss of freedom within the US.  Bailing out the gazillionaires while families move to tent cities.  And I feared that Tiller's murderer would get off because of a hung jury.  I braced for it.

But reason prevailed.  So now I am hopeful that reason will prevail elsewhere, like in the health care debate.  So this is a good day.

Scott Roeder, convicted of killing Dr. Tiller, is being sentenced today.

Scott Roeder, 52, goes before Sedgwick County District Judge Warren Wilbert at 9 a.m. Roeder was found guilty of first-degree murder on Jan. 29 after testifying that he shot Tiller in the forehead on May 31 while Tiller was serving as an usher in his church.

Jurors also convicted Roeder of two counts of aggravated assault for threatening two other ushers who chased him after the shooting.

Attorney for the family is making statement and proceedings are going on now.

"I'm not here (as Tiller's attorney) but as a friend ... To give voice to the family," he said.

Judge Warren Wilbert said that he finds the Hard 50 constitutional and won't stop the state from asking for it.

If Roeder ever gets out of prison, he will be under lifetime supervision of a parole officer, Wilbert said.

I hope he gets the "Hard 50".  I also hope that everyone that plans on speaking for him gets investigated and watched, these people are nothing short of terrorists.

You got your wish, daMamma.  50 years, no possibility of parole, and according to the NPR story today, the judge cited the fact that Roeder stalked Tiller for years as a factor in the choice of the maximum sentence.

Roeder himself was allowed to rant about his scheme to murder Tiller to prevent him from doing his work, and complain about how he wasn't able to introduce his idea that murdering Tiller was in defense of "the preborn."  (I don't know that Roeder used that term, I just think it's one of the weirder ones.)  I heard a snippet or two (yuck) and may get the courage up to listen to the whole thing if its posted somewhere, just to know what this dude, who will no doubt be a anti-abortion martyr from here on out, is preaching to the choir.

I'm glad this trial is over.  Very heavy stuff.

The "Hard 50" means that he won't even be considered for parole until he is 102 years old.With the poisonous thoughts racing through this cretin's brain, he won't last that long.

The man who killed Wichita abortion doctor George Tiller has filed a petition complaining that his rights have been violated and asking to be released from custody.

The man is just full of complaints and his is about 24 pages long. 

He has been found guilty of first degree murder.  Do you normally get to get out of jail when convicted of murder while awaiting appeal?
